WoW Ratings lets you rate anything in Azeroth

The most interesting screen is probably the "Best and Worst" screen (which you can reach by clicking on the toolbar at the top of the homepage -- note to Antoine: permalinks are your friend, scale back on the javascript), where, as of this writing, Hakkar the Soulflayer is sitting on top of the heap, and the Voice Chat patch and Darnassus are sitting in the bottom 10. No Fandral Staghelm yet, strangely, but I'm sure things will get shaken up after all you readers head over there (and if the site's a little shaky under the flood of our link, give it time to get back on its feet). Sure, it's a little silly, and it's not so much a "resource" as it is just a free-for-all of player opinions, but it is interesting to see kind of a meta-overview of what players do and don't like. Useless features for the loss, old school raid bosses for the win.

I actually think that's a pretty cool concept. Sometimes I like to see opinions on pieces before going thru the trouble of finding them.
tonedeff Oct 22nd 2009 5:49PM
The opinions are nice to read. But this site starts to feel like a bit of work after awhile. The no back button seems to make this feel like a major fail. I feel as if im doing more clicking then I need to :P

WoW Ratings: prepare to be SlashDotted.

Hrm. Anyone else find it annoying how it loads everything without changing pages?
WTB back button....

Thats called AJAX.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajax_(programming)
It is the way websites are done these days. Very nice once you get used to it. No more "web page flickering" when you click a link on a site.
Tamednan Oct 22nd 2009 1:59PM
This is probably the most unnecessary use of AJAX I've ever seen.
GrumblyStuff Oct 22nd 2009 4:35PM
Call me a luddite but I hate it. I like being able to take a step back rather than starting all over again. I like being able to open links, many many links, that look interesting while I'm reading this other page. I like being able to have a URL to a set page rather than having to post instructions to get information.
Maybe this is just a bad implementation but it definitely feels like a leap backwards in design.

Cool at first, but then it felt chore-ish after about 15 votes.
lazymangaka Oct 22nd 2009 1:55PM
Surprisingly fun website. If only it were letting me leave more comments. T-T

Interesting site, it is enjoyable to see other peoples thoughts on the stuff that you look at everyday. It was fun for about 20 min. Although probably not something I'll care/remember to look at again.

FAIL!

This site is interesting.
Will probably get more accurate as more people vote.
Ed Oct 22nd 2009 3:14PM
The problem with that site is that the nostalgic people are already pouring in to rate up Vanilla stuff and rate Wrath stuff to the very bottom of the heap.
artifex Oct 22nd 2009 3:29PM
I think the colors/levels are skewed a bit; I'd expected the lowest level to be grey or junk. :)
bushkanaka86 Oct 22nd 2009 3:33PM
Yeah, the interesting thing is that since you posted this, an hour and a half ago, the top 10 list has changed dramatically. Now the top 10 is dominated by WotLK stuff. If you look at your screen shot, it shows that Hakkar was the top, but he was the top with only 3 votes. 3 votes is not the best judge of something.
Right now, the top is The Lich King and he has 32 votes only, so that isn't a good judge either. So basically, thing will work themselves out in the long run, but there are so few votes right now that things could change very quickly.

Basic campfire for president!
Frank Oct 22nd 2009 3:52PM
i just wanted to say that hakkar is a bastard.
that is all.
Gimmlette Oct 22nd 2009 3:52PM
Lots of fun. One of those sites I'll visit again and again, vote for a few things, wait a few days and come back to vote for something else.
or
Spend all Tuesday maintenance time voting on everything.
Nice concept. It will probably morph into something more utilizing our comments as traffic grows.
Risq Oct 22nd 2009 4:59PM
I loved this concept and signed up right away!
... of course that was back when it said 'Rate this Product' instead of 'Rate this Topic'.
So glad Antoine changed it.

Thanks Mike!
What an awesome surprise to wake up (i'm Down Under) and see that I have a page dedicated to WoW Ratings on WoW.com!
The load on the website has dramatically increased in the last few hours, and i'm hoping the code/infra will hold. I ask everyone to be patient and forgiving if the website is shaky at times, so far so good.
The quality of the information displayed (in the Best / Worst for example) will get better as more people contribute.
As was stated above, statistics with only 3 voters don't mean much, and the top 10 list has already changed considerably in the last 4-5 hours.
Surprisingly, the bottom 10 didnt change so much.. I guess patch 2.2.2 wasn't Blizzard's best :-)
I have received a number of suggestions by email already and am looking into them. Submitted screenshots have also been reviewed already and should be available for rating/commenting.
All in all, I hope you'll enjoy the site as much as I enjoy building it, and i'll try and add more features as we go (yes i need to add a way to permalink pages, and slow down on AJAX :-)
But for the moment, the War Effort is ON! make sure you set your factions right in your profile options.. You wouldn't want to provide resources to the opposing faction, would you?
Thanks all for the feedback,
Thanks HEAPS to WoW.com for this storyline,
See you all online.
Cheers,
Antoine / Soap
