Breakfast Topic: Crafting pride

So our question today is: what's your favorite or most important crafting item? I'm in the middle of leveling my paladin, and he's just now reaching the highest reaches of Engineering, which is a skill I've never leveled up before, but have always wanted to. I haven't gotten together the gold for epic flying yet (well on my way at level 73), but I did make normal flying machine as soon as I could. And my big goal with this character, other than getting him raiding ASAP, is to make the Mekgineer's Chopper -- ever since we first saw it in the early days of Wrath, I've planned to get a character up high enough to make it. I know, I know, I can buy it, but for me it's a crafting thing -- I want to go out, find what I need to find, and craft it with my own virtual hands.
Any other crafted items that have you wanting to make something for yourself?

Professions have driven me to level 2 of my alts (Mage and Priest) that I probably wouldn't have bothered with otherwise. Doing so gave me a goal that drove me to grind my way up to 20 or 35 or 55 or 65 rather than parking them in an Inn somewhere. Heirloom items help, but it's the professions that give me that little extra push.

The Magic Carpet. People hate it when I recite Aladdin.

I love my magic carpet, too : )

Ditto. Just made the epic flying carpet on my mage. At level 72, flying around Northrend on a fast carpet is a great way to level, saves boatloads of time, and will probably be my favorite mount for the entire life of my mage -- and I have it at 72.

I might have dumped tailoring some time ago, in fact, but I don't want to give up my carpets, even if I hardly ever see them (GupPet has a random mount button). Yeah, the embroidery procs are useful to me as a lock, but I'm sure BS or JC has similar special bonuses.

I made the best Mechano-Hog ever. We raided Ironforge and I crafted the bike on the Great Anvil soaked in Alliance blood. This was followed with a victory lap around the Ironforge circle. I officially have the most bad ass hog in the game.

Daaaaaaaaaaaang!

That is such an awesome idea I am going to do it!
seriously that is freaking genius to me! I am really big on the horde vs alliance thing and i love to support my race!
Best non-mechanic related idea I have ever heard

Hot damn.
+10 Respects to you, good sir/lady!

The real truth of the matter is that he snuck in behind some real fighters and quickly used a Dwarf anvil because Horde anvils just aren't up to the task of real engineering. ;-)
Evari Thalia Oct 23rd 2009 11:05AM
That is fantastic!!
mtsadowski Oct 23rd 2009 11:22AM
Dude! That is pure win! Not only are you making something that's bad-ass, but you're also rubbing it in the face of the dwarven culture.
I mean, if you're Alliance, you really CAN'T do the same to the horde. They only have regular anvils, etc.

I have some screen shots of the event will put a link up when I get home.

Before engineering became super popular, due to Jeeves and mechanohogs, anything I crafted seemed special to me. Even when I was leveling up I made a big deal about crafting mechanical squirrels, target dummies, bombs, and other fun gnomish things. This profession has certainly been all tears and sweat though because I don't have any high-level mining toons yet so everything was bought off of the auction house...everything. But I guess that the helicopter was indeed my most favorite thing yet.
Boz Oct 23rd 2009 9:01AM
I love my Helicopter, but my goggles are what truly set me apart due to their unique look. Those goggles scream engineer, and I hope they update them as they did in BC for 3.3 (Surestrike v2.0 -> Surestrike v3.0).
At least it would justify why I've held on to them for so long.

I recently just picked up Leatherworking on my rogue and the first pattern I bought was Heavy Leather Ball. It's always nice to have a toss-around in 5 mans to see who will throw back (Or to those who even notice it in their inventory).
Sinnh Oct 23rd 2009 8:19AM
as a leatherworker, i'm very happy with the cheap leg reinforcements i can put on my stuff, and any armor kits tend to sell pretty well...but i can't think of anything FUN that i can make...even the riding crop went the way of the dodo. even hypothetically speaking, what fun items could a leatherworker make? one thing i can think of would be to craft our own riding harness, which lets you tame any beast in azeroth to be your mount. you'd have to be limited to one riding harness per character so it doesn't get crazy with the number of mounts. that would be cool.
i also always thought tailors should be able to craft costumes...

I agree. I picked up Leatherworking this summer for my shaman, mainly because it was the one profession I had not yet tried. What a snoozefest. I leveled out of any gear I could craft so quickly, it was hardly worth making. I liked the idea of specializations, but there's little point to them in WotLK.
"Heavy Leather Ball." Hmph!
Laynne Oct 23rd 2009 12:51PM
I agree, nothing in LW is fun. My friend had the idea that we should be able to make bear skin rugs to fly around on...which sounds kinda neat :)
Zakarii Oct 23rd 2009 8:20AM
I love engineering. The rocket boots are by far my favorite. Makes me cry that you can't flag run with them anymore though.
