Breakfast Topic: Crafting pride

So our question today is: what's your favorite or most important crafting item? I'm in the middle of leveling my paladin, and he's just now reaching the highest reaches of Engineering, which is a skill I've never leveled up before, but have always wanted to. I haven't gotten together the gold for epic flying yet (well on my way at level 73), but I did make normal flying machine as soon as I could. And my big goal with this character, other than getting him raiding ASAP, is to make the Mekgineer's Chopper -- ever since we first saw it in the early days of Wrath, I've planned to get a character up high enough to make it. I know, I know, I can buy it, but for me it's a crafting thing -- I want to go out, find what I need to find, and craft it with my own virtual hands.
Any other crafted items that have you wanting to make something for yourself?

I'm a tailor. I chose tailoring because when new to wow i rolled my lock and thought being able to make my own gear would come in handy. It really didn't. The few occasions where it does give you an edge (basically entering end game content) to be able to craft your own gear (presuming also that you're topping the profession before you're topping the level cap), said gear takes so long and so much expense to create and/or farm for that you'd probably be as well off just farming instances for drops instead, or farming mats and tipping someone else 20g to make them for you since no tailoring mats are exclusive to tailors.
The few buffs available to you are nice enough, but no better than those available to, say, inscriptors, jcs or enchanters. Noone ever really buys much off you except bags, and leveling the profession is bloody expensive, especially if you aren't also an enchanter. The only little bit of joy I've had from tailoring was the twenty minutes of fun i had on my flying carpet before the novelty wore off and i switched back to the drake.
So, to blizz... Please! Please give us poor tailors more non combat items that we can just faff around with. A few pointless costumes would be fun, or some extra big tailor-only bags or something. Please!

One word:
flying carpet
Wait, that's two words.
Okay, here's another one:
BAGS
I don't know what you're doing wrong, but it's got to be something.
When I decided it was time to send my Lock to Outlands, I didn't want to do it without the right "outfit" and I certainly didn't want to end up with the same drop from Hellfire that my Priest and Mage were wearing (Raiments of Divine Authority), so I looked at what was available and came across Robe of the Void. One problem, it requires Tailoring.
But if you want something bad enough...
So, I power-leveled Tailoring from 1 to 300, cost me about 1000g, but I sold everything that I had made for about 500g total.
When the mount requirements were lowered, and I realized I could make myself a flying carpet, I again power-leveled. Going from 300 to 410 cost me another 1000g, but the expense was well worth it.
Additionally, don't forget that one word:
BAGS
I have made close to 1000g in the past month or so just from selling bags, mostly Netherweave Bags, and I plan to make another 2000g or so over the next month with all the Frostweave I'll be gathering.
So, maybe I haven't quite broken even, but I have a steady means of revenue and a rather unique flying mount.
And just recently, I've made the move to Northrend, decked out in my Frozen Shadoweave set!

I loved BC Tailoring. It certainly wasn't easy, but I think it was just about the right amount of hard. The climb up to max it was tough, and gathering all the motes for primals to make the cloth took a bit too long IMHO, but it was oh so awesome to finally craft and wear the last piece of my FSW set, which I used for a long time.
However... in Wrath we get ... a carpet? As fun as some may find it, it didn't really impress me. Tailored gear was also rather piddly compared to what you could get elsewhere. I was clad in Naxx and tier gear before I could even finish crafting my epic Tailoring gear, which was barely useful by then. Some may have liked some of the more quirky items, but to me Wrath Tailoring felt just as clunky and bolted-on as Wrath PvP, and it lost any use waaay too fast. Other than bags I only used two items I crafted. Even the lame quest gear (moar spirit and haste pl0x!) was in many cases better than what I could craft. I give Tailoring in Wrath a big 'pthbbbbt'.

I have 3 of the 4 AQ glove enchants and am rather proud of them...still grinding for the 4th. :/
but on another note...I saw someone posting the other day on the forums...her name was juicycouture.
she's a tailor.
i thought that was ridiculously awesome as anything made by her would be quite the fashion statement.

Being able to get a full, decent looking set of gear. Even if it is just the PvP stuff. I'd really like to see crafting become a truly viable means of gear progression in Cataclysm.

I recently picked up Tailoring on my Shaman (dropped Skinning), and it's a decision I will never regret. Tailoring was my very first profession on my old main, a Mage, and honestly, I missed it a lot. So when it came time to get a second crafting profession for my Shaman, I decided to go with Tailoring for a number of reason:
1) Flying Carpet - This is one of the things I was really excited about getting back when I was playing my Mage, and it just felt wrong to not follow through on my dream to have a Flying Carpet. Definitely my favorite mount.
2) Swordguard Embroidery - As silly as it may sound, this embroidery did come into the equation when I made my decision. Most of the advise on professions say that you're best bet is to go for something like Blacksmithing or Jewelcrafting to get the best bonuses. But those sounded like a lot of work, and expensive to level, and frankly their bonuses sounded kind of dull. But not Swordguard. Swordguard is a proc. I love procs dearly. I get no greater satisfaction than to watch my buff bars swell with all the procs I'm getting from talents, trinkets, Berserking, and my totem, and adding another one just sounds fantastic.
3) Bags. I love making bags, and I love selling bags. The Netherweave bag market is an amazing and nearly unfloodable market that rakes in serious amounts of cash for me. I'm still struggling with the last skill-up to get to 445, when I can finally craft myself Glacial Bags, which was another dream from my Mage days.
In short, I love tailoring.

I just got into the bag selling business myself and you're right. Netherweave bags sell like crazy. I'm relatively new to the game too, just hit 65 last night on my lock, and this is my main source of income. I can post like 20 bags at a time and even if someone undercuts me, which always happens, they still almost always sell.

The magic carpet as well for me. I'm always amused by zipping around the world (or at least Northrend, for now) on that thing.
Gren Oct 23rd 2009 8:28AM
I got practically all professions on my toons but my favourite is engineering. I got it on my holy paladin and its probably kind of worthless - but omg - I so love it! I always wanted engineering on one toon - a bag full of exploding sheep! And i love the pets you can make - and ofcourse the imba mekginer - best mount in the game. Never made any money from it - just have it for my own pleasure! Gief more engineering schematics Blizz!!!!!!!!!!!

My main's an alchemist, and it's an incredible gold saver with the Crazy Alchemist Potions, Flask of the North, Flask procs, etc. Although my favorite potion is probably just a plain ol' http://www.wowhead.com/?item=9172 (Invisibility Potion). No one expects a priest to go invisible.
Seamus Oct 23rd 2009 8:45AM
My main is also an Alchemist and the one item I'm most proud of is the Redeemer's Alchemist Stone from BC. I had quit the game for a while, but this recipe brought me back. I grinded out the Shattered Sun rep as quick as I could and was soon sporting one of the best healing trinkets in the game. I was pretty proud of that, I'd never had such a nice piece of gear.

Levelled myself to 450 engineering just for the flexweave cloak enhancements. i love parachutes too much.
Sure im a druid and we have flight form, but have you ever seen someone fly in at 280% speed, swap to a parachute, KEEP MOVING FORWARD AT FULL SPEED, and dps as he goes? its fun as hell :P
Eli Oct 23rd 2009 2:51PM
This. I do this ALL the time.
In IoC, I'll launch myself into the keep, parachute just before the apex, kill a warlock on my way down, and still have enough forward momentum to land on the keep, and keep dpsing from there. If someone finds me, I stay put until a healer finds out how to launch themselves on there without a parachute, then I keep going.
My favorite is also going so high up you can't see anything, and doing all my traveling at that height. When i get to my destination, I dismount midair, then try and steer as close as I can onto my target.
Needless to say lags are not a good time for this :P I'm so glad they increased the duration of the parachutes to 30 seconds though... A lot less guesswork for me, and a lot fewer deaths.
TL;DR- Parachuting from up high=the shit.
Oldbear Oct 23rd 2009 12:30PM
I'm the same way. Everone expects a druid to fly in to battle... not drop. I'm part of the Thunderbluff 51st Airborne. I love the HALO jumps.
greenthumbs Oct 23rd 2009 8:59AM
the level 60 epics... maybe it was because i managed to pick the recipes up for cheap on the AH, or maybe it was just the fact that +14 crit was so hot at that point in time!
npanth Oct 24th 2009 9:23AM
Engineering is my favorite profession. I love mining with my gyrocopter, unmounting from a ridiculous height, parachuting down to a node, then blasting the nearest mob with my gnomish lightning generator! It's made entirely out of metal... LOL
Migi Oct 23rd 2009 9:31AM
I loved crafting during TBC back then it was something special to run a round with an epic craftable weapon which i used till better stuff dropped in BT.
It would be really great to see such craftable items again.
Jamie Oct 23rd 2009 9:06AM
Despite the Armorsmith specialism always being terrible, I always wanted my Dwarf Paladin to be one, so I did!
Oh well... stupid Armorsmithing, well Weaponsmithing these days is only slightly better.
There is always a certain pride seeing that "Made by " on your armour, yea... I made that :)
Goobenix Oct 23rd 2009 9:11AM
I've really always wanted to take up engineering, but no one can answer me what the endgame raiding benefits are.
BS has those extra sockets.
JC has those dragon's eyes.
Enchanters can enchant their rings...
And so on.
What do engineers have other than fancy convenience items or head enchants (that from what I know are generally better from reputation sources)
Thank you

Engineering is far and away the best profession for tanks. The armor glove enchant is worth more itemization points than any other buff for any profession. Also for tanks the bombs are huge, especially if you are a goblin engineer and can use the global thermal sapper charge. Macro it to your shield wall/divine protection/whatever and you can instantly grab a group of mobs trying to run by you, as well as reduce the damage you're taking (from your bomb and their soon-coming attacks). Great for when your other group agro abilities are on cooldown.
For casters there are the hyperspeed accelerator glove enchant, which give you a good bit of haste for several seconds. They are pretty good, but I'm not sure how they would stack up itemization point-wise against other profession buffs.
