Patch 3.3 PTR: Kalu'ak Fishing Derby details

News flash! Tired of getting ganked in Stranglethorn Vale for the weekly fishing contest? Well worry no more as our favourite walking walruses, the Kalu'ak, are hosting their own fishing tournament in Northrend every Wednesday when patch 3.3 drops! Some details have been released in the recent 10676 build.
Great! What are the details?
Elder Clearwater is going to hang out in Dalaran for exactly one hour for a Blacktip Shark that you have to catch and return to him. The event starts at 8:00 PM on Wednesday.
If you're looking for a tip though, apparently the elusive Blacktip Shark seems to favour Pygmy Suckerfish. Keep a few handy in your bags when you're going fishing. Don't worry though as even if you don't end up being the champion angler, you'll still receive a reward just for turning the shark in.
On an achievement related note, the Master Angler of Stranglethorn achievement has been changed to Master Angler of Azeroth. Winning the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza or the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby will be enough to meet the requirements for the achievement.
We're not quite sure as to what the prizes are yet, but according to the Warcraft twitter, a new heirloom ring awaits the winner!
Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to the Arthas. WoW.com's Guide to Patch 3.3 will keep you updated with all the latest patch news.Filed under: Fishing, Analysis / Opinion, News items

Excellent! I never cared for the STV tourney, myself... but I'm looking forward to giving this a go.

As a player on a PvP server, it's almost impossible to win the STV contest unless you roll up there on Sunday with your whole guild backing you up. That's the only achievement I need for my Salty title as well. Looking forward to this.
Any idea if we'll have to actively use a few Pygmy Suckerfish in the course of fishing up the Shark?

Isn't the point of this to give people another chance at the achievement and spread out the competition? Putting a heirloom as the reward is going to make the demand way to high and 1 winner a week means demand will be high for quite some while.
Oh well. at least no more twinks stealing the tastyfish spawns.

For a while?
Competition for the STV fishing contest is still too high today. This is going to be one of those things like an Arena mount that you will never win unless you're 150% committed to it.

Wow, I'm totally looking forward to this, even if I'm probably not going to win for a long while.

This looks really fun, but the time is definitely going to clash with many people who have scheduled raids during that time. I'll prob never see it myself :( .
birdtongue Oct 24th 2009 11:25AM
i'm just pleased that there will finally be another time available. 3PM Sunday every week is just as inaccessible to some.
birdtongue Oct 24th 2009 11:26AM
to be entirely clear, that's 2-4PM on Sundays.
Xevius Oct 24th 2009 2:18AM
Awesome,
just awesome.
I like this quite a bit.
Sean Oct 24th 2009 2:29AM
That's cool, I just wish that it wasn't happening when I was at work. That's two contests per week that I can't participate in. /sigh
But I'm glad the achievement has been made either/or. Might be easier for some folks to nab Salty.

Curious what you mean by the pygmy suckerfish remark since it's not a lure...hints please?
kabshiel Oct 24th 2009 3:13AM
I think we can assume the heirloom ring is the source of the +5% experience we saw before.
Starlin Oct 24th 2009 3:39AM
I took the Pygmy suckerfish comment to mean we needed to fish from pools. Isn't that where they are usually caught?
Dightkuz Oct 24th 2009 5:59AM
We're supposed to be fishing from the Pygmy Suckerfish POOLS in order to have a chance to catch the Blacktip Shark, not use the Pygmy Suckerfish as lure. >_>
Kaylin Oct 24th 2009 8:22AM
If this ring is something other than a reference to the 1 ring I will be very sad. wtb tarnished 1 ring.
Matt Oct 24th 2009 10:04AM
The big difference is that druids will have a distinct advantage in this contest. With flight form they will be able to travel faster from pool to pool.
kmarcy1729 Oct 24th 2009 9:05AM
Never seen a Pygmy Suckerfish School . . . just seen 'em attached to other fish from pools ;)
Kole Oct 24th 2009 10:37AM
OMG it will be nice to finally use the trillion Suckerfish sitting in the bank for my Alchemy alt! Between getting them while doing the Marcia's fishing daily and from Marcia herself I have WAY more than 8 toons need lmao.
birdtongue Oct 24th 2009 11:29AM
we have two stacks sitting in the guild bank, and the rest of two columns filled with pygmy oil -- i anticipate using them in battlegrounds, but the fish sell fairly well on the AH...
devilsei Oct 24th 2009 7:18PM
Great, attach the best fishing pole there is to one, then the only way to get heirloom rings on the other, AND make them different days...
Seriously... can't they just add in a "within the first X minutes" to this bloody thing, if this whole Derby was meant to help? Hell, if they really wanted to help, they should just put the two on the same day, same time, so there isn't nearly as much competition on it. I know some people who will do the competition every week, even after getting the items, just to be asses and keep others from winning.
Now that I think about it, there's another way to help. If someone has won already, put them on a damn month-long timer to keep them from entering and doing it again next week, and if they get all the prizes, kick them out of it permanently.
