I think one of the biggest things that Blizzard does right with WoW, is that they explore, experiment, and research. It's what really keeps them on top of the MMO world. They're the biggest online game, but they don't just ignore all the little games that pop up offering new features and new styles of gameplay. They look at these games, and find the appealing things about them. Then they go to their community and see what everyone is saying about these other games and what they like about them. Blizzard is at the top of the online gaming industry because they work hard to keep their game top notch and competitive. Periodic content patches make sure new features keep on rolling out, and new endgame content keeps their subscribers close.
