From Slorkuz:
Coming in patch 3.3.0, the esteemed Tuskarr of the Kalu'ak are proud to introduce to Northrend the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, a test of fishing skill with a healthy dash of luck! Every Wednesday beginning at 8 PM players can try to catch the elusive Blacktip Shark. Elder Clearwater sits in Dalaran for one hour awaiting the return of the quickest, most experienced fisher to bring him the first catch of the night. This champion fisher will be rewarded in-kind for his or her fishing expertise. Those who aren't able to return with the first catch will still receive just reward for getting the Blacktip Shark to Elder Clearwater before he takes his leave.
It is said that these sharks' favorite meal are the bite-sized Pygmy Suckerfish. Perhaps a hook in their waters will do the trick. Because of the increased concentration of fish, you have an increased chance to catch a shark from fishing pools. Don't forget, in patch 3.3.0 you never catch trash from fishing pools, regardless of skill.
The derby winner will receive a substantial chunk of experience (or money at maximum level) and gain 5000 reputation with the Kalu'ak. In addition, the champion will be given a choice between two unique rewards:
- Dread Pirate Ring
Binds on Account
Unique-Equipped
Finger
+34 Stamina
Requires level 1 to 80 (80)
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 53.
Equip: Improves hit rating by 29.
Equip: Experience gained from killing monsters and completing quests increased by 5%.
Boots of the Bay
Binds When Picked Up
Feet
Requires Fishing (200)
Equip: Increased Fishing +15.
Use: Whisks you away to the finest drinking establishment in Booty Bay. (1 Day Cooldown)
To keep it interesting, the Achievement "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" has been changed to "Master Angler of Azeroth." This can be earned by winning either the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby or the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza.
Please bear in mind this feature will be undergoing testing on our Public Test Realms and is subject to change prior to the release of patch 3.3.0.
Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to the Arthas. This makes it totally worth is to start leveling my fishing, something I was going to do anyway!
Majorfalcon Oct 26th 2009 2:46PM
No, if you read it you'd see
"in patch 3.3.0 you never catch trash from fishing pools, regardless of skill. "
meaning you can have 1 fishing skill and participate.

Yet another leveling heirloom? When will the madness end!?
Majorfalcon Oct 26th 2009 2:45PM
1 day CD is underwhelming...especially for a port to Booty Bay...
Andy O. Oct 26th 2009 2:59PM
I'd do it for the ring, I got alts to worry about! Damn it!
Too bad I already maxed out the faction, but ah well.
Tamednan Oct 26th 2009 3:19PM
The boot teleport is for those that do the STV fishing tournament. Keeps you from having to set your hearth to booty bay when you head back to turn in the fish. Since you'd only be doing that tournament once a week, the 1 day CD is nothing.

The portal to Booty Bay is to help people win the STV fishing contest. There's no other reason why you'd want a booty bay port anyway.
WoWie Zowie Oct 26th 2009 3:29PM
not really, since you can set your hearth to booty bay ;p
i'll take the port boots over the XP ring fa sho, seeing as how i keep going back there for whatnot (goblin AH, short boatride to ratchet, gurubashi arena, etc). its not just a fishing thing

I first read that as 8 AM, which made me excited as a morning player, since that would mean limited competition, but alas, no such luck.

Seriously don't see why this is at 8pm Server time on the day raids reset.
Not just catering to casuals, which I don't mind, but a huge middle finger to raiders.

Raiders get better gear than non-raiders, and they get to see all of the content Blizzard puts so much time into, whereas we non-raiders do not. So much of what Blizzard does only benefits the raiding community, and I don't think it's completely unfair to implement one part of the game that is mostly off-limits to raiders when so much of the game is completely off-limits to non-raiders.

Raiders get better gear through progression raiding, they get to see the content through - what is now - easy raiding, and "non-raiders" have every opportunity to do both. If you don't LIKE it, that is another matter entirely.
Putting an event at the same time as the majority of raiding guilds either start or are into their raids already is just downright stupid, when they could put it one hour earlier. Balancing it to allow more people to do it is tricky, but 8pm actively excludes the majority of raiders.
MazokuRanma Oct 26th 2009 4:57PM
The article says that it occurs on Wednesday.
That's the day -after- all the raids reset.
flawless Oct 26th 2009 4:58PM
For the US servers, sure. If things havn't changed since I raided on the US side, however, that is still a standard raiding day.
Tom Oct 26th 2009 5:41PM
Raiders versus non-raiders? You all make it sound like, once pidgeon holed into a particular part of the game you aren't allowed to do anything else. I raid once or twice a week on wednesdays, but I also do the fishing tournament when I can, I do quests, I run dungeons, I do holiday achievements. I'm a pretty all around player.
It DOES seem daft to do it on a day when a big percentage of the population is usually involved in a scheduled group activity. Sure I could not raid if I wanted to (not true of every guild) but then I miss out on raiding for the week. Make it a monday! Or a Thursday! Or Saturday! It doesn't really matter, it just seems odd to make it a wednesday when that is probably the most raided day.
I want to do this tournament, it sounds like great fun.

Yeah 8pm server time, the time that most people are on. Why are Blizzard being like this, they should make it so less people can do their contests they create. Maybe raiders can write Blizz and give them their schedule so Blizz can change everything for you. Or you could just put raid your time back 30 minutes, but Blizz working around your schedule is so much easier.
SUnwing Oct 26th 2009 9:41PM
Thank god my guild ends at 8 am server time, so i cean just recruit some guildie to be my spotter right after raid
KT Oct 27th 2009 4:38AM
""non-raiders" have every opportunity to do both."
And raiders have every opportunity to do the fishing contest.
I don't have time to get involved in raiding, so it's not really available to me, but technically if I really wanted to do it, I could give up other stuff I do in life and focus on it. I just choose not to because I prefer the other stuff (like my husband
jealouspirate Oct 26th 2009 2:48PM
Very cool!
With the +5% exp, the ring absolutely makes it worth trying to win.
Adamanthis Oct 26th 2009 3:35PM
I don't know about that. There are going to be, what, a few hundred people competing every week? And all but 52 of those every year will walk away empty-handed. Your odds of winning the ring would be, what, maybe 10% over the course of an entire year? The time saved by a 5% XP gain would not be anywhere close to the time invested in the tournament for the vast majority of players.
For those who enjoy the competition of the tournament as its own reward, the ring is a tantalizing, if largely unattainable, goal. But it would be illogical to give it any significant weight as a material incentive to enter the competition.
