From Slorkuz:
Coming in patch 3.3.0, the esteemed Tuskarr of the Kalu'ak are proud to introduce to Northrend the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, a test of fishing skill with a healthy dash of luck! Every Wednesday beginning at 8 PM players can try to catch the elusive Blacktip Shark. Elder Clearwater sits in Dalaran for one hour awaiting the return of the quickest, most experienced fisher to bring him the first catch of the night. This champion fisher will be rewarded in-kind for his or her fishing expertise. Those who aren't able to return with the first catch will still receive just reward for getting the Blacktip Shark to Elder Clearwater before he takes his leave.
It is said that these sharks' favorite meal are the bite-sized Pygmy Suckerfish. Perhaps a hook in their waters will do the trick. Because of the increased concentration of fish, you have an increased chance to catch a shark from fishing pools. Don't forget, in patch 3.3.0 you never catch trash from fishing pools, regardless of skill.
The derby winner will receive a substantial chunk of experience (or money at maximum level) and gain 5000 reputation with the Kalu'ak. In addition, the champion will be given a choice between two unique rewards:
- Dread Pirate Ring
Binds on Account
Unique-Equipped
Finger
+34 Stamina
Requires level 1 to 80 (80)
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 53.
Equip: Improves hit rating by 29.
Equip: Experience gained from killing monsters and completing quests increased by 5%.
Boots of the Bay
Binds When Picked Up
Feet
Requires Fishing (200)
Equip: Increased Fishing +15.
Use: Whisks you away to the finest drinking establishment in Booty Bay. (1 Day Cooldown)
To keep it interesting, the Achievement "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" has been changed to "Master Angler of Azeroth." This can be earned by winning either the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby or the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza.
Please bear in mind this feature will be undergoing testing on our Public Test Realms and is subject to change prior to the release of patch 3.3.0.
Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to the Arthas. Pretty sure that's the point, Nick.
Deathgodryuk Oct 26th 2009 4:03PM
How dare they release content people want to take part in.

@jrizutko
..actually that would be a douche move by blizz, and if they started doing that with fishing, they might with everything they would defiantly lose players. 1. It would single out the casual, as i think u were implying 2. I'm trying to get into raiding, but when i fish its fora break form people, yes to get my cooking up too but it would be nice to have some food for myself, that and i can send it to my hunter for one of his pets, so its not JUST raiders doing it for the feast, and shame on you for thinking casual don't deserve this just cause its fun : /

8:00 P.M. on Wednesday night?
*sigh*
Looks like it's back to Stranglethorn for me.
Dear Blizzard: PLEASE allow this event to occur twice a week.
Malkavos Oct 26th 2009 3:01PM
I'd like to offer a dissenting opinion. As someone for whom participation in the booty bay fishing contest has been impossible, due to not being able to play Sunday afternoons, this contest is perfect and may make it possible for me to get my Salty achievement after all! There will be two fishing contests a week now, and thank Jeebus they're at different times.
ash Oct 26th 2009 8:08PM
Not having to commit to that 2pm time slot on Sundays is definitely a bonus in my opinion.
Jessie Oct 26th 2009 2:54PM
yay! a fishing tournament I can participate in! stupid sundays and late church! lol
Nathanyel Oct 26th 2009 4:22PM
If you choose church, or family time or personal rest over doing a game, then it's your decision.
Jessie Oct 26th 2009 5:27PM
That is why I am not complaining! I think its great that they are putting in another way to get the achievement, that more people might be able to do. I like getting my casual achievements and I work towards them, but there are some that are hard for me to do because real life is more important than a game. And I'm sure others who are going after the "Salty" title are thrilled to have a our chances doubling for this certain achievement.
(cutaia) Oct 26th 2009 2:57PM
Anything to make the Salty title easier to achieve is A-OK in my book.
Cirocco Oct 26th 2009 3:02PM
Oh good. As a massively keen fisher with Salty title I'm soo glad that Blizzard has scheduled the event precisely for raid start time so I and probably many many others in the same position will never ever be able to compete in it.
What on earth where they thinking scheduling this at raid peak time for the majority of guilds in the world, and probably on one of the most popular raid days. Let's hope they sort this out soon. Saturday during the day would be much better for the majority of people.
Nick Newt Oct 26th 2009 3:10PM
Maybe it's for people that don't or can't raid yet? You've still got Stanglethorn, calm down.
jrizutko Oct 26th 2009 3:22PM
They were thinking "Whatever time we schedule it, people will whine. They'll whine if its too often or too rare. They'll whine if its a weekday or a weekend, evening, morning or afternoon. Lets do an analysis and schedule it at the time that we determine offers the most players the best experience."
Neirin Oct 26th 2009 5:02PM
I think they tried to pick a time as different from the STV tourney so they could cover as large a portion of the payer base as possible. Can't do it on the weekend? How about a weekday? Still working at 8PM? Do it in the early afternoon!
Reps Oct 26th 2009 6:59PM
Actually, they were thinking:
"Hmm... No matter what time we schedule this event for, people will whine about the time. So let's just schedule it when the vast majority of players run their raids. It certainly would make no sense to have this event on a 6 OR 8 DAY ROTATION so that it falls on a Tuesday one week, a Monday the next, and a Sunday the week after. That would fix NOTHING."
anaramidiere Oct 26th 2009 11:32PM
Wow, what's with all the raider QQ?? If you want to fish instead of raid take a night off for god's sake.
rulez Oct 26th 2009 3:05PM
Pity I will never be able to participate in this event as Wed is one of our raiding days. Why not make the time a bit more flexible like twice a week or Sat afternoon or something? :(
RogueJedi86 Oct 26th 2009 3:14PM
Take your priorities. Raiding is for the hardcore, fishing is for the casuals. You'll get your epics and heirlooms one way, we casuals will get ours another way. :)
Tom Oct 26th 2009 5:45PM
I do both. Am I hard core or casual? Or maybe, just maybe, I'm a PLAYER?
Can we please stop putting labels on people. We're all just people enjoying playing a game and many people like to do lots of different parts of it.
Hardyoyo Oct 26th 2009 3:10PM
It seems to me that, if one managed to win the boots, one's chances at also winning the Booty Bay Extravaganza might increase a tad.
