The full details after the break.
From Slorkuz:
Coming in patch 3.3.0, the esteemed Tuskarr of the Kalu'ak are proud to introduce to Northrend the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, a test of fishing skill with a healthy dash of luck! Every Wednesday beginning at 8 PM players can try to catch the elusive Blacktip Shark. Elder Clearwater sits in Dalaran for one hour awaiting the return of the quickest, most experienced fisher to bring him the first catch of the night. This champion fisher will be rewarded in-kind for his or her fishing expertise. Those who aren't able to return with the first catch will still receive just reward for getting the Blacktip Shark to Elder Clearwater before he takes his leave.
It is said that these sharks' favorite meal are the bite-sized Pygmy Suckerfish. Perhaps a hook in their waters will do the trick. Because of the increased concentration of fish, you have an increased chance to catch a shark from fishing pools. Don't forget, in patch 3.3.0 you never catch trash from fishing pools, regardless of skill.
The derby winner will receive a substantial chunk of experience (or money at maximum level) and gain 5000 reputation with the Kalu'ak. In addition, the champion will be given a choice between two unique rewards:
- Dread Pirate Ring
Binds on Account
Unique-Equipped
Finger
+34 Stamina
Requires level 1 to 80 (80)
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 53.
Equip: Improves hit rating by 29.
Equip: Experience gained from killing monsters and completing quests increased by 5%.
Boots of the Bay
Binds When Picked Up
Feet
Requires Fishing (200)
Equip: Increased Fishing +15.
Use: Whisks you away to the finest drinking establishment in Booty Bay. (1 Day Cooldown)
To keep it interesting, the Achievement "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" has been changed to "Master Angler of Azeroth." This can be earned by winning either the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby or the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza.
Please bear in mind this feature will be undergoing testing on our Public Test Realms and is subject to change prior to the release of patch 3.3.0.
Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to the Arthas. How many times can you win the event?
Just wondering cuz it would really suck if Blizzard didn't bother to protect the chances of other players. Not saying a previous winner shouldn't be able to compete again, just that there should be something to indicate "Hey, this guy already won, lets give him or her a different prize (like x amount of gold) and give a new player the real reward."
Neirin Oct 26th 2009 4:47PM
If it's like STV, you can win it any number of times. I have a friend who has won the STV tourney 4 times. First, to get the other rewards, then to keep the 'Salty' population down.

did anyone else see the name of the ring as a refrence to "the Princess Bride"?
Dread Pirate Ring = Dread Pirate Roberts
staffan.johansson Oct 26th 2009 5:42PM
Especially since, like the Dread Pirate Roberts title, this ring is meant to be passed on when you're done with it.

Now can use the boots to port to Booty Bay instead of setting hearthstone! Now if only I could get off work an hour before it starts instead of my usual time of an hour after it starts.
PeeWee Oct 26th 2009 3:48PM
1) Have a party with a lock and two more friends stand by at a location with pools.
2) Pick up the quest and get summoned
3) ...
4) HS and profit.
The chances of ever getting this one, even if only casuals participate - Slim to none.
Hardcores will go for this as well, though. Another +5% XP for their Worgen/Goblin alts to get to 80.

Fun idea, but it will be a nightmare to do on a PVP server, just like STV fishing contest on Sundays! People patrol the coasts during Sundays just to gank others doing the contest...
Moyanna Oct 26th 2009 4:08PM
Remember theres only gonna be 52 contests per year given the average sever population is in the thousands don't expect to see it. cus ppl will farm for the acheivement for the ring (which not even been a fishing orientated item will pull in even more ppl than stv contest does)

Raiders get better gear than non-raiders, and they get to see all of the content Blizzard puts so much time into, whereas we non-raiders do not. So much of what Blizzard does only benefits the raiding community, and I don't think it's completely unfair to implement one part of the game that is mostly off-limits to raiders when so much of the game is completely off-limits to non-raiders.

Crap, this was meant to be a reply to my first post.

Great idea EXCEPT of the fundamental flaw that Wednesday 8pm is about the THE time, right after a reset when guilds start raids. This precludes all those who want to raid on the most popular evening of the week generally. Add in the those handing in not just the first prize but all the others picking up the consolation prize must have another impact on Dalaran lag.
Really good idea for the second competition but why don't they have it on the
Tuesday 8pm
when most have finished raids etc, the day before the reset?
As it is, as a RL I wont have a chance to do this competition which is a shame.
Samuel Reese Oct 26th 2009 4:32PM
Blizzard can't guarantee they'll be up and running on a patch day (especially point-patch days), so it makes more sense for their sanity's sake to put it on a day that is less likely to be buggy and crashing when a good chunk of players are logging in to Dalaran.
Again, you have to choose between the items here or the raid, simple enough. The only gripe I have is the whole Dalaran HS thing you have to do to get to the guy. I don't have a slouch of a machine, but I do have my fair share of disconnects on initial sign-on, and prefer to set my HS to the Sewer over the above-ground Inns. Seems a bit unfair on that aspect.
moonraker Oct 26th 2009 4:40PM
Samuel, in Europe Wednesday is patch day, and was part of my point. It's the day our servers reset. Tuesday would not be good for US servers I can see. Avoiding either or just making it day before reset where ever.
And why should I chose between a reset day raid and the competition? It's not so much my choice but as a RL it's my job for others.
I agree with you that making it on a patch/ reset day is asking for problems if servers have extended maintenance etc.
Samuel Reese Oct 26th 2009 4:57PM
Good point. More reason to push for a separate maintenance schedule for Europe then, isn't it? Maybe actually get them in sync so that those Wednesdays at 8 Server are actually feasible. Can't win either way, I guess.

HOW DARE THEY ADD IN A CONTEST FOR CASUALS AT A TIME WHEN HARDCORES CAN'T GET IT. DON'T THEY REALIZE HARDCORES CAN GET ALL THE HEIRLOOMS AND CASUALS VERY FEW?! THERE CANNOT BE AN HEIRLOOM THAT CASUALS HAVE A BETTER CHANCE TO GET THAN HARDCORE. ONLY HARDCORE ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE A BETTER CHANCE AT GETTING HEIRLOOMS THAN CASUALS.
The all-caps sarcasm aside, they probably timed the Derby to be at that time on purpose. The worst part of the STV Tourney was all the Top Tier Level 80's running around killing the fishermen just for the hell of it. Setting the Derby at a time when those Top Tier 80's are raiding means this Derby will be much more civil. And with that, the casuals finally have a chance to get an Heirloom, when previously they couldn't get any heirlooms due to their not doing heroics or raids much(if at all). I for one am glad for this new Tournament's timing and rewards that help the casuals over the hardcore.

@ RogueJedi86
" the casuals finally have a chance to get an Heirloom, when previously they couldn't get any heirlooms due to their not doing heroics or raids much(if at all)."
Really, the vast majority of raiding guilds are casual, and especially on a reset day like Wednesday so no idea why the (poorly executed) sarcasm?
As to heirloom items not being available to 'casuals' that is why you can obtain them from running heroic instances which are hardly 'hardcore'. And if that is not possible it's quite possible to buy them as a solo player via the Tournament, and why Blizz added them as rewards there as yet another another alternative.
It looks as though you have an issue with higher level toons ganking people at fishing contests. If so try a PVE server and avoid the issue.
I love raiding and I love fishing. Even if you don;t raid, Dalaran is always worst on a reset evening for this reason.
Dreyja Oct 26th 2009 4:32PM
This has made my week! Due to work constraints I've never been able to do the STV one.
Just when I thought I loved those Tuskarr as much as possible - they do something like this. :)
Draenors Oct 26th 2009 5:14PM
I hope the time of the tournament will be changed. It's a fact that raiding is the major endgame content and that most people raid at 20.00 or so. I guess you can't place the tournament at any time without having it interfere with some peoples' RL-schedule, but you could at least place it on a time where it doesn't interfere with the majority of most players' in-game-schedule.
Jimbo Oct 26th 2009 5:32PM
How dare they nerf my Salty achievement! :P
teflamreilavehc Oct 26th 2009 5:47PM
Ok, so, no fishing skill required for fishing in pools? Is there any reason to have fishing skill for anything now, other than to get a few achievements? I mean, is there anything valuable a grand master angler can catch that a someone with a fishing skill of 1 can't? Pool fishing gives access to every valuable fish in quantities greater than open water fishing ever does, and gives access to the sea turtle, and pool fishing is all that's required for both fishing tournaments. Am I missing something, or is no reason at all to level fishing?
