When WoW came live, there was this general idea that Alliance was the protagonist in Lore (which is true, but anyway) and Horde were the "bad guys". Most newbs didn't want to be on the "wrong" faction, so they chose Alliance to play. To avoid those newbs, more mature players, specially the ones that played Warcraft 3 and liked Thrall lore, chose Horde.

Fact is, after BC came out, there are more kids playing Horde than Ally, mainly because of Blood Elves. All human males look like they are 30+ while Blood Elves look like the pretty 18 from teen magazine. You have any doubt of that? Just check Barrens chat, Alliance has no such thing as Elwynn Forest chat. Or maybe Anal jokes, anyone?
