G4 talks to Blizzard about five years of WoW

Afrasiabi talks about how the quest team puts together and tracks all of the game's quests (he mentions both Metzen and the game's historian as the "lorekeepers" of the game), and the fact that they've put together "millions of words" of story and background lore for the game at large. He specifically talks about Cataclysm and replacing questlines, and says that if something does get removed from the game, they're hoping to replace it with something better, but most "fan favorites" will stay. And finally, Jeff Kaplan looks back on the early game itself, from unfinished zones to broken balance to launch day exhaustion. G4 teases something about the next MMO project, but all he says is that he can't talk about it. Oh well -- if we can't look forward, at least we get a nice look back from the folks at Blizzard who've been there since the beginning. You can see all four of the videos after the break.

Well I guess there is still some form of game content on g4.

Interesting stuff. Morgan Webb needs to brush up on her interviewing skills though...her interruptions were annoying. :(
Zinn Nov 2nd 2009 3:55PM
The interruptions prolly come from making certain they keep to the time limit and on track so they don't answer "too much", like saying the same thing again but with other words. So it's prolly actually good interwieving techniques she's using.

I actually prefer this style of interviewing. Like the interviewer's actually interested in what the interviewee has to say, and not just parroting questions. I find it gets a little boring when there are two people talking, and yet one could just be replaced by a slip of paper.

G4 has simply evolved from what it once was. They still have game content but they have a wider variety of shows. If they didn't become what they are today I highly doubt they would still be on the air.
It's just like WoW. When it first went live there was the stigma that only nerds who live in their parents basements played WoW. Five years and around 12 million subscribers later that is no longer the case. There aren't 12 million nerds living in their parents basement to begin with.
Larger variety of views tuning into G4. Larger variety of players in WoW.

It would of been just as successful as TechTV was before the merge. They just felt the need to try to compete with Spike and cannot do so.
Dreadskull Nov 1st 2009 7:48PM
The problem is that they basically destroyed everything original and funny, and basically turned the station from a nerd station to a frat boy station. The "evolution" of the Screen Savers into Attack of the Show is a good example. X-play is the only original show left, but even that is a huge shell of its former self. Now it basically covers everything Attack of the Show used to do, and have cut out many of the hilarious skits/sketches/reviews for other stuff that just... really doesn't make it as good as it used to be.

I'm in agreement that the station has pretty much become Spike, plus some gaming/tech shows. I don't watch it so much anymore because about 8 times out of 10 that I turn to it they're showing Cops or some other crap.

I very much miss the dear, departed TechTV.
I know they called it a merge, but it was more like when Ubisoft ate Red Storm, thereby turning the Rainbow Six franchise from "tactical simulation" to "OMFG shoot it!11!"
I liked that not only was there game content on TechTV, but that there was software and hardware content as well. You could actually learn useful things.

I like Ninja Warrior... period.

Being from the UK I do not know of this "G4" but I do have 1 thing to say. WTB BETTER INTERVIEWER.
RogueJedi86 Nov 1st 2009 8:52PM
I wish X-Play still showed gaming news. Now all we get is 30 seconds of the MMO Report segment a week, plus only the biggest of gaming news mentions on Attack of the Show's "The Feed" segment. I don't have all day to scour Kotaku and Joystiq for big news, it's nice to see it in bulleted form on tv. The ticker at the bottom has news, but that's annoying, and often cut off by commercials, forcing you to watch 10 minutes of old ticker again after the commercial break just to see where they cut off at the commercial break.

Come back Kaplan!
alpha5099 Nov 1st 2009 9:39PM
Oh man, I wish there was an opening to be Blizzard's historian. That sounds like the greatest job ever. Being paid to have an encyclopedic knowledge of a fictional universe, that's the dream right there.

The interviewer was nowhere near as bad as the cut-aways. He's reminiscing about Westfall and we're looking at, what, the Belf starting zone?
Pathetic, especially for The Gaming Channel (tm).

"What's your favorite location?"
"Warsong Gulch"
Not the answer I was expecting at all...Tom Chilton likes to pvp! Nice to know I got someone in my corner who digs battlegrounds (specifically wsg, THE BEST BG EVAH!) as much as I do :P
Lucidique Nov 2nd 2009 5:40AM
I love this BG as well.
And that's very odd, because I absolutely scorned that place all Vanilla, BC and the better part of LK. Then one day, I was like "hey guize u wan do wsg lolz", and I enjoyed it!
Warsong Gulch is like a good game. Easy to play, hard to master. I love it :)
Lemons Nov 1st 2009 10:24PM
And who's playing those toons? It's painful to watch him/her drag the mouse down to the bar and click...
