In my opinion, the imp's primary value is that it is the only real ranged "pet" in the game. Even as an affliction lock, I find myself using the imp a lot on fights where melee pets can't do continual damage - specifically Sapphiron in Naxx, Mimiron (phase one only) in Ulduar and Onyxia - or fights where being close to the boss is very hazardous (Mimiron or Heigan). While other pets die to massive AOE blasts or cant reach the boss, the little guy is still dealing damage.
