China's GAPP halts WoW review, calls collecting subscriptions "illegal behavior"

We're not sure what happens from here -- an official from the country's Ministry of Culture has also said that the suspension of the review is "not appropriate," especially since the content under review had already been approved while the game was being run by The9, which may mean that it will be overturned just as quickly as it went down (and the game will be back in business before long). On the other hand, Netease may have jumped the gun -- they've been collecting subscriptions for a while, which they apparently weren't supposed to do without official GAPP approval (and we've heard before that GAPP might just want to delay the release of foreign games as long as possible). We'll keep an eye on the issue -- most analysts are saying that despite the threats, this is just another roadbump for NetEase, and they should still be back to collecting payments for the game soon.
Update: Stranger and stranger -- NetEase has released a statement saying they've gotten no official word from GAPP outside of the official press release. When you consider that along with the Ministry of Culture's comments, it seems that the government isn't quite sure whether they're approving the content or not.

And people talking about Chinese gold farmers not being able to bug us in 3...2...
ashetaw Nov 2nd 2009 3:13PM
I don't think the gold farmer thing has much to do with china these days. There are just as many US and EU gold farmers as there are chinese. Sucks that because of some b/s red tape though they're still not able to do wrath over there =/.
RogueJedi86 Nov 2nd 2009 3:31PM
Ashetaw, most/all of the goldfarmers in the game I've encountered spoke terrible Engrish, but responded clearly with lots of Chinese when I said something Chinese in a whisper. If there's American or European goldfarmers, I haven't seen them yet. But this isn't a topic about goldfarming, this is a topic about China's legit WoW playing.
Cyanea Nov 2nd 2009 3:31PM
What I mean is...inevitably whenever Chinese WoW is mentioned on this site, someone starts talking about how it's a good thing they can't play because Chinese gold farmers "have gotten really bad lately" or something.
RogueJedi86 Nov 2nd 2009 3:34PM
This has really gotta be hurting the WoW subscription numbers. The longer it takes for the Chinese servers to come back up, the more likely it is for the Chinese WoW players to seek out other MMOs to play since they can't play WoW easily. This has to have put a sizable dent in WoW's subscriber/population numbers. Hell, we'll probably get Cataclysm here before they get WotLK.
Seaborn Nov 3rd 2009 11:52AM
LOL....The players being affected by this have nothing to do with the gold farmers.
AutumnBringer Nov 2nd 2009 4:09PM
Wow, so far you're the only ones to mention that. That is a surprise tbh.
Ohh, what's really going to bake your noodle later on is, would they have actually mentioned it if you hadn't said anything?
Warlock Nov 2nd 2009 5:55PM
Regardless of whether the gold farmers themselves are Chinese, they aren't PLAYING on Chinese servers... there is no country-to-country gold transfer service. These guys have US/EU accounts. They are farming mats on YOUR server. This doesn't affect them at all.
Elmo Nov 2nd 2009 6:17PM
@ Warlock
So Blizzard just isn't allowed to start Chinese servers but buying an US or EU version of WoW would be legal?
then again such dodgy companies would probably take the risk and have a large crate of WoW shipped in.
Warlock Nov 2nd 2009 8:14PM
@Elmo - Why not? They are already doing something illegal. The Chinese Government is not going to step in, they don't care. They only care about "OMG WESTERN INFLUENCE! KILL IT NOW OR THE PEOPLE MIGHT NOT OBEY US WITHOUT QUESTION!!"
jaynitan Nov 2nd 2009 10:20PM
Chinese farmers don't farm on chinese version of wow. . . .how can they transfer their money? they play on EU or American WOW.
Besides more gold is sold to people that was stolen from other players, read WOW's post on gold sellers/buyers. (And yes it is true, you buy 5K gold they try to steal account info or get you to dl something then they steal the money back from you and sell that plus the money they got from selling your gear.)

travis Nov 3rd 2009 4:11AM
Sorry to rub it in... but I'm in China now, although I play on a US server, and not only do you guys not have WoTLK over here, but you don't have Facebook, Blogger, Myspace, Wordpress, YouTube, Taco Bell, or clean air...
But I do enjoy Dim Sum :)
shaunarcher Nov 3rd 2009 4:30AM
I do believe that we don't have twitter either, or is that just me?

@travis
I'm kind of amazed that people are more concerned by China not having any (anti)social network than human right or not having a taco bell rather than having over half the population live on one meal a day. (Of course the middle class wow players over there don't care either)
Here's a solution for you if you miss taco bell: Put cooking oil in a pan had some butter to fry. Had 1 cup of salt. Once everything is fried piss in the pan to add flavor and enjoy.
@artifex
Revolution is a thing of the past, this is 2009. Now a day people "revolt" by QQing on their facebook status. And since in china there is no facebook..
