China's GAPP halts WoW review, calls collecting subscriptions "illegal behavior"

We're not sure what happens from here -- an official from the country's Ministry of Culture has also said that the suspension of the review is "not appropriate," especially since the content under review had already been approved while the game was being run by The9, which may mean that it will be overturned just as quickly as it went down (and the game will be back in business before long). On the other hand, Netease may have jumped the gun -- they've been collecting subscriptions for a while, which they apparently weren't supposed to do without official GAPP approval (and we've heard before that GAPP might just want to delay the release of foreign games as long as possible). We'll keep an eye on the issue -- most analysts are saying that despite the threats, this is just another roadbump for NetEase, and they should still be back to collecting payments for the game soon.
Update: Stranger and stranger -- NetEase has released a statement saying they've gotten no official word from GAPP outside of the official press release. When you consider that along with the Ministry of Culture's comments, it seems that the government isn't quite sure whether they're approving the content or not.

"Now, China is definitely censoring their internet on an official level, but I'd still say they're closer to the EU or US than they are to, say, North Korea."
Yea in the way the members of the Donner Party are closer to the average person than Hannibal (i.e. still pretty bad)

Hurry for misinformed Urban Legendry...
Donald Duck - It's told that in 1977 Walt Disney’s duck was "banned in Finland because he doesn’t wear trousers". Actually, that’s an urban myth. In fact, politicians in Helsinki decided they were wasting taxpayers money on mindless American comics and cut them from their library budget.
It had nothing to do with pants, but it made a cute thing to blame in on in other countries, like the U.S., to make the Finns look foolish.

Is it true that most of the worldofwarcraft players in china who are commited to playing the game have moved to taiwanese servers?
lucbigboy Nov 3rd 2009 4:12AM
That is correct. I don't know anyone living in China who actually plays Chinese WoW. The dedicated players all play on WoW Taiwan. Mainland China as well as HongKong play there as we don't wish to wait till this crappy government pulls its finger out and finally gives WoW the go ahead. Also Taiwan is current and up to date like US and EU Wow and actually has WOTLK!
Damn internet censorship! ! ! ! Let me play WoW and watch midget and horse pROn again!!!!!!!

I don't know why but, things are so messed up in China, i mean why cant they just give "Wrath of the Lich King" to them already just to be fair on them.

Tirion wants to save Azeroth from Arthas, but little did you know about his secret (and politically motivated) U.S. front group, the Argent Crusade.
The next Chinese demand will be to remove Tirion from the game =)

Any chance that when Wrath finally releases for them it'll come with Ulduar?
warigami Nov 2nd 2009 4:42PM
Hate to mix politics and WoW, but with China's dreadful history of human rights violations, does this really surprise anyone? I mean, this is a government that has no concept of free speech or individual rights whatsoever.

This is why we should have the Samurai Pandaren, just to spite China.
Ringo Flinthammer Nov 2nd 2009 5:52PM
Sooo, does this mean the rest of us can have the jade tiger mini-pet instead?
shaunarcher Nov 2nd 2009 9:55PM
Jealous of my sexy tiger? =D

Yeah, uh! Get up, now! Ow! Knock out this!
Super highways, coast to coast,
easy to get anywhere
On the transcontinental overload,
just slide behind the wheel
How does it feel
When there's no destination - that's too far
And somewhere on the way,
you might find out who you are
Living in America - eye to eye, station to station
Living in America - hand to hand, across the nation
Living in America - got to have a celebration
Rock my soul
Smokestack, fatback,
many miles of railroad track
All night radio, keep on runnin'
through your rock 'n' roll soul
All night diners keep you awake,
hey, on black coffee and a hard roll
You might have to walk the fine line,
you might take the hard line
But everybody's working overtime
Living in America - eye to eye, station to station
Living in America - hand to hand, across the nation
Living in America - got to have a celebration
I live in America, help me out,
but I live in America,
wait a minute
You might not be looking for the promised land,
but you might find it anyway
Under one of those old familiar names
Like New Orleans (New Orleans),
Detroit City (Detroit City), Dallas (Dallas)
Pittsburg P.A. (Pittsburg P.A.),
New York City (New York City)
Kansas City (Kansas City),
Atlanta (Atlanta), Chicago and L.A.
Living in America - hit me
Living in America - yeah,
I walk in and out
Living in America
I live in America - state lines,
gonna make the prime, that
I live in America - hey,
I know what it means, I
Living in America - Eddie Murphy, eat your heart out
Living in America - hit me, I said now, eye to eye,
station to station
Living in America - so nice, with your bare self
Living in America - I feel good!

And just like that, WoW's subscription base is cut in half.

I for one welcome our new Chinese Overlords.

Clearly Chinese government's way of killing off WoW in China to make way for their crappy titles.
lucbigboy Nov 3rd 2009 4:28AM
You dont know how correct you are. :) Pretty much everything in China has a chinese rip off web site.
Chinese government restricted google so much, because they wanted their own baidu.com to come out on tops. They win.
They took youtube down. Not only was it non chinese, but it also allowed too much freedom of speech. Chinese version youku.com wins again.
There are many other examples of this. From this kind of BS evidence you can clearly see the chinese government are up to the same with WoW. But the problem with WoW is......that there is no chinese alternative. People love Wow the world over. Even if China came up with a game similar and banned WoW. I can guarantee chinese people will still find a way to play WoW.

Look how much work authoritarian governments put into the Olympics and other international sporting events. Blizzard should have a big page announcing the top guilds - put that Stars one from Taiwan up on top and make their country really prominent. Give a big prize to the team that gets the new big raid boss, etc. The Chinese officials will start thinking, oh blimey, not those damned Taiwanese democrats. We MUST have China as number one. We need to join in this international competition.
Tinker Nov 3rd 2009 1:01AM
Well actually it's not a problem of approval. It's a struggle for interests between China's GAPP and Ministry of Culture. It's somewhat hard to explain, but it involves a transition of power over MMOs from GAPP to MoC, and GAPP's not willing to give up.
There's a special topic dedicated to this issue on wow.178.com, but unfortunately it's in Chinese and too looooong for me to translate. Any help would be appreciated.
