China's GAPP halts WoW review, calls collecting subscriptions "illegal behavior"

We're not sure what happens from here -- an official from the country's Ministry of Culture has also said that the suspension of the review is "not appropriate," especially since the content under review had already been approved while the game was being run by The9, which may mean that it will be overturned just as quickly as it went down (and the game will be back in business before long). On the other hand, Netease may have jumped the gun -- they've been collecting subscriptions for a while, which they apparently weren't supposed to do without official GAPP approval (and we've heard before that GAPP might just want to delay the release of foreign games as long as possible). We'll keep an eye on the issue -- most analysts are saying that despite the threats, this is just another roadbump for NetEase, and they should still be back to collecting payments for the game soon.
Update: Stranger and stranger -- NetEase has released a statement saying they've gotten no official word from GAPP outside of the official press release. When you consider that along with the Ministry of Culture's comments, it seems that the government isn't quite sure whether they're approving the content or not.

Looks like they haven't gotten the grasp of free trade, it always makes me laugh when I read the dreamers at LewRockWell going on about how wonderful China is for freetrade when its a system run by a big government that confiscates all foreign currency and exchanges it for internal only Yaun.
Still most people are supporting this system so they'll do ok.

The last time I saw updated subscription number WoW was at 13.+ million. Without WoTLK being released in China, I mean most of the players over in China have found a way to work around their government. I am sure that they work around their government in most things in their daily life. Just like the people in the US and other countries do. Remember prohibition, the Chinese government isn't that much different then many other countries. The problem is that everyone is focusing on them and Scared of the Big Bad China.

Ok some comments here are bias, ignorant and arrogant. I'm a Chinese living in China and currently playing on the US server with my hubby. This is just an artile about CWOW issues and I don't understand why some ppl have to bring up some b/s about human rights and communism, even if some of them have never been to China. I'm proud to be Chinese and we've got a lot of good things too, it doesn't bother me not to use facebook, twitter, myspace(actually I have acc of each of those but I stopped using them cuz they kinda suck to me and I recommend msn live space) and taco bell etc. My hubby's American and he's living in China with me now, we are having a good life here. I hope ppl stop getting flipped out by reading some negative news about CWOW.
