Breakfast Topic: Will you buy the new in-game pets?

This firmly brings WoW into the arena of microtransactions -- purchasing in-game items for real life money. Some games, not WoW, allow you purchase items which make you stronger in the game. Other games, like WoW, allow the purchase of vanity items, such as these pets, which do nothing other than look cool or count towards vanity achievements. Some people really don't like this model of gaming, others are indifferent, and others are in love with it.
I'm personally in love with it. I think the items are cheap enough to be affordable to a large portion of the player base, and are cool enough to warrant the purchase. Further, since the items don't provide in-game power ups for people, they are essentially meaningless toys. This makes it an ideal luxury item for the virtual-nerd to spend $10 on. So will I buy the new in-game pets? Absolutely, I already have.
But what will you do? Are you going to go out and buy them? Vote in the poll and leave a comment, we want to know.

My wife already bought them, and has already been heard saying, "Don't kill that guy till I get my pet out!"
Siorra Nov 5th 2009 8:06AM
I will, but I'm a little pissy over it being £9 in the UK. That's waaaaay more than $10 >.>
Tri Nov 5th 2009 8:12AM
Yeah have to agree that the 10 euros or 9 pounds is a lot more than the 10 dollars.. the dollar is worth nothing these days lol
As example, using today's money value:
http://www.nationalbanken.dk/dndk/valuta.nsf/side/Valutakurser!Opendocument
I'm from Denmark, so posting the prices in DKK to show comparison..
10$ = 50 DKK
10euro = 74 DKK
9£ = 75 DKK
Can I pay in dollars plx?

I'm in the US and I think that is utter crap. I have a few UK friends, and the same thing goes on with the program Steam, where you buy games online. I payed $45 for Left 4 Dead 2, and they had to end up paying £45 like it's equal.
It's utter crap.
Nick Nov 5th 2009 8:29AM
Or maybe even udder crap.

Totally agree! If blizz only keeps 5 dollars worth from the 10 euro fee and give the rest to charity i'll buy one :)
Drob10 Nov 5th 2009 8:57AM
Imported goods cost more. You can only fit so many pandarens on a boat.
BigBadGooz Nov 5th 2009 10:21AM
Dosent the eu have certIn rules about international transaction ie taxes if that's the case that's why you pay a bit more
Tri Nov 5th 2009 8:06AM
I'm probably gonna buy them because I'm such a sucker for in-game pets >.<
But I don't really think that buying in-game items for real money is a good idea in a MMO..
I can accept it if it's only VANITY items.. but any equipment making your character stronger is not okay.
InvaderDem Nov 5th 2009 8:57AM
I agree with you. I hope this doesn't lead Blizzard to start selling in-game items for money. I don't like the idea that someone is going to be better geared than me just because they have the money to buy the stuff instead of earning it through raids like I'll be doing.
If Blizzard does decide to go that route - and lets hope not - then I'll expect a deduction from my subscription fee, or a deduction of the entire subscription fee because MMOs that do offer buying in-game items are usually free to play.
Epocrates Nov 5th 2009 8:48AM
made me sad that 30% so far has said yes; b/c that's what blizz is counting on - that not ALL will buy in, but if a few do that's even more cash flow that they otherwise would never have had.
I'm also broke so having extra cash would probably change my mind. Curse you Tuition!
curtisrutland Nov 5th 2009 9:06AM
Yeah, damn Blizzard making money! Screw them, what have they ever done for us! Wait, what?
Rioriel Nov 5th 2009 8:07AM
During our Ulduar raid last night, a guildie mentioned them and the general concensus in the raid was (after the debate about money/charity) that the Pandaren one was going to be massively popular.
We had an extended break at one point when a guildie had to dash off for 20-minutes or so. Perfect time to hop to the store, hearth to Dalaran, log out/in, fly back to Ulduar, teleport, aaaaaaand...
Summon Li'l KT!
He's ADORABLE.
(Then found out the Pandaren one had a charitable cause so I bought that for my boyfriend ^^)
Rudzy Nov 5th 2009 8:11AM
The pet store is no different to the trading cards, except that you're actually buying the item, instead of buying the chance to get the item.
I'll be getting the Pandaran, no doubt. :)
bongato Nov 5th 2009 9:59AM
It is not the same. If you play the card game as my hubby and I do, those loot cards are like nice little free surprises. I've never gone out of my way to purchase a pet loot card, and I never would for the prices they go for- you can get non 'loot card' versions for gameplay in the packs as it is. I wouldn't pay $10 even for a pet, that's around 3 packs of the cards I could actually have and use in real life.
Not to mention that people are paying $10 for something that is one out of many in their bags, and besides those few who have a genuine thing for them, they'll be as unused and useless as all their other pets in a couple weeks. Really, if you have 110 pets, how much are you going to *use* this 10$ purchase?
Give me a second hearthstone I can set to somewhere else, and then hell yes I'd pay 10$.

@bongato
There are great random macros and I have several that have "classes" of pets. I also use different ones for different instances.
Some people are just goofy like that.
jealouspirate Nov 5th 2009 8:33AM
I wont be purchasing them. Ten dollars each is an extremely steep price, if you ask me. I've paid less for real pets!
As far as the whole pet store thing goes, I suspect we'll begin to see more and more items there, if this makes a lot of money. Items that, because you need an incentive to buy, will be some of the 'coolest' pet designs in-game.
I didn't vote "third sign of the apocalypse", but I think this is a pretty slippery slope. Sure, as of right now they're only vanity items, but people already go to great lengths in-game to achieve vanity items. They're important, even if they don't make your character 'stronger'.
Zakarii Nov 5th 2009 8:10AM
I don't really like it too much (I voted for the apocalypse.), but that's probably just because I want both of them very much and can't afford them at the moment. (Just bought two faction transfers.) As long as they don't do what City of Heroes/Villains does and start offering "vanity abilities and cosmetic options" for WoW. That's the whole reason I quit City of Heroes/Villains.
The Long Man Nov 5th 2009 8:10AM
I already bought both of them.
And I will say without a doubt, that lil K.T. is the most awesome looking pet in the game.
Drekten Nov 5th 2009 8:13AM
I already did. They are 2 of the best pets in the entire game.
