Patch 3.3 PTR: Get a pug when you PUG
Because those guys at Blizzard have a wonderful sense of humor as well as an unerring knack of dangling the right carrots in front of players' proverbial horses, they've come up with the most adorable little pet to entice everyone to try out the new dungeon system to be implemented in patch 3.3. Called the Perky Pug, this elusive and adorable little fellow is rewarded to players who group with other random players using the new dungeon system. According to the patch notes, "the more random players with whom one groups, the faster the pet can be obtained."
That means the process can actually be pretty painful. It's kind of like playing Russian Roulette, except that instead of one bullet, you can possibly have four. And instead of bullets you have inept, or badly geared, or socially abrasive (or combinations of all three) players. And instead of your head, it's your... well, okay, it's still your head that can get pretty messed up.
Although instead of your temple getting all messy and ventilated, it's your forehead getting all banged up and bruised by your keyboard keys. On second thought, it's not like Russian Roulette at all. It might actually even be fun.
And even if it isn't, just check out that datamined video from MMO Champion -- isn't that cute little rascal worth it?
Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to the Arthas. With rep grinds and a bit spent in the AH you can be better geared without run Heroics. Pick an item slot, find something obtainable (the the guides on this site) and go grind that rep... after you grind the rep for a week or so you'll find you have extra gold to fill a few more spots from the AH. Use the PUG system to find groups for regulars.
It may take a few months, but that IS the life of a casual player.
I've been doing this with my druid and it works great. Plus the time spent in regular instances will sharpen your game skills and fill out your gear.

Wow, so many responses, first off sorry for the "I hate..." comments, I don't hate.
and I should of said I'm not badly geared, but i'm far from the best, and since I pretty much just started WoW when WotLK came out, I'm still very noobish, and I find the information available online to be overwhelming, I don't play much, but I feel like I've gotten everything I can get out of soloing, doing normal dungeons and some heroics, I get the occasional complaint, as a feral druid i'm definatly more suited for dps'ing and only tanking if I have no other option. I can hold my own on some of the heroics, some others I have trouble with, and when I tell people up front that I'm not the best tank in the world, some are sympathetic, some just flip out or pass.
Random PUGs I see as a place where we underdogs can go out, get a group of like minded newbies and try to get some gear. With the LFG expansion I figured it'd make it easier, but now I have doubts, might be more of the same, just more of it. We'll see maybe Blizzard will come out with an experience level system, like you can specify to get groups of experienced players or newbies, or don't care.
I finished Argent Tourney, working on The Wyrmrest Accord and The Oracles now, and actually I've come away with enough gear from ToC normal that I just dual speced Feral/Resto, but I still need to practice my healing, though Healbot, talk about a lifesaver! I run Wintergrasp at least once a week though I hate PvP, but you can't deny the pure joy of running around in bear form wrecking everything in sight.
I'm far from a terrible player, but I'm in no way perfect and man WoW players are unforgiving...
Arbit: "Seriously, don't use the new LFG system, you will just be making other players lives harder."
Heh, thanks for your kind words Arbiter, I'll be sure to say hello when I see you.

New Gnome Druid travel form! XD
Swifteye Nov 5th 2009 2:39PM
Very, very cute. Very realistic, aside from the aforementioned "apparently nobody at Blizzard has every actually witnessed a dog moving its legs" thing.
The vanity pets in general just keep getting better and better with each new introduction. Makes me wonder if they're ever going to redesign any of the older pets, because I love my White Kitten but danged if the little bugger ain't polygonal as all get-out.
I want this puppy! I've never done a PUG before, but this should be reason enough to try!
Ametrine Nov 5th 2009 2:40PM
I just made a happy little "squee" of joy.
Yes, blizzard, you just made a 27-year-old male sound like a 13-year-old girl.
Dreyja Nov 5th 2009 11:55PM
Heh, heh. Welcome to the club. If it's any consolation, 27 yr old males are VERY popular here. ;-p
Aaron Nov 5th 2009 2:49PM
I see many pet treats in my little pug's future. =D
Plastixblue Nov 5th 2009 2:53PM
As someone with two real Pugs this is a must have for me.
mconan Nov 5th 2009 3:09PM

i will be having one for sure
Todd Nov 5th 2009 3:02PM
Poor enchanters, getting used and abused.
kidjudas Nov 5th 2009 3:09PM
I am sure I am not the only one who HAS to pug because I am not in a big raiding guild. No matter what LFG system, people like me will have to deal with potential jerks, ninjas, and undergeared players. BIG DEAL! Get over yourselves. Some of you probably are elite players who put in 80 hours of wow a week. This new possible LFG setup is great for those of us who maybe put in 40 hours a month (at most!).
Ziberious Nov 5th 2009 3:13PM
HOLY GOD I LOOOVE PUGS!
Miri Nov 5th 2009 3:26PM
I will be Pugging instances until I can get my perky pug.
My RL pug was rather freaked out by the video--he likes to curl up in my husband's lap in the evenings when we play WoW, and he knows that when he hears the Ventrilo DC noise, it's time to get a treat and go to bed. Pugs are the best little critters (in game and IRL) EVER. I guess it's time to get another one to add to the household.
Tori Nov 5th 2009 3:53PM
Aww, that's so adorable! xD
My WoW lap pet is my blue tongued skink who loves to curl up for a nap while I play. :)
alpha5099 Nov 5th 2009 3:27PM
I've had very good experience PUGs so far (except for that one time healing H ToC with freshly dinged DKs in greens. GREENS!), so hopefully adding in players from other realms won't sour the experience. And god, Blizzard really wants us to use this random PUG interface. Lots of gold and emblems (woo gearing up without raiding), achievements, a title, and a kickass pug pet (the first real dog in WoW too, I think). I can't wait for 3.3.
Death Knight Nov 5th 2009 3:34PM
The new LFG tool is a godsend for DPS classes. and the pug is so purty and i want it now. Hotfix the PTR tool right NOW. SO I CAN GET Puggy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carrie Nov 5th 2009 3:43PM
Man, pugs are the ugliest dogs on the planet but... Blizzard managed to make this one cute. Well played.
SpaceGoatPriest Nov 5th 2009 3:46PM
WTB Dachshund mini-pet.
"As a reward for LONG queue times for BGs, here is a wiener dog."
DeathwishXIII Nov 5th 2009 4:01PM
That is freaking cute, but I don't think I can ever replace my hawk owl.
Sithril Nov 5th 2009 4:04PM
Every moment I see this pet I get the feeling to kill it ingame . Just so tempting !
Like the Amani say :
"Hello supper !"
