actually, it's a reference to an old D&D spell by the same name, which opened up an inter-dimensional space where you could store your stuff. : P

The D&D spell is an easy excuse to make the reference without getting in trouble.

Another possible reference is to another popular MMO, Disney's Toontown Online, or cartoons in general, where characters have a portable hole in their pockets for some unknown reason, to pull out and jump through.

Oh, god, if someone puts Ruby Slippers or a hearthstone in there...
