In among all of the
"omg fake pets for real money" drama from
this week's announcement, we may have missed something big:
the Pandaren are now live in the
World of Warcraft. The Pandaren are my favorite Azerothian race, even though they're essentially a joke --
Samwise Didier just loves pandas, and he made art for
an April Fool's joke that Chris Metzen loved so much they decided to include the bears as
real characters in Warcraft III. Since then, they've become fan favorites (not least of all, especially for me, because alcohol and ale are a big part of their culture), but we've only seen
hints of them in
World of Warcraft. There was a rumor going around a while back that they would never appear in the game
because China didn't allow depictions of violence against the bears, but that was just a rumor. Still, the Pandaren have existed in
WoW only as a Blizzard in-joke. We assume they're out there somewhere, but until now, no one has ever seen one.
Of course we say "until now" because there are now little Pandaren monk noncombat pets running around, bowing, and
doing magical kung-fu. Does this mean that
the future Emerald Dream expansion will have us all playing as Brewmasters? While yes that would be awesome, not so fast again:
Diablo and the
Zergling from
Starcraft are both in the game as noncombat pets, and they don't mean anything at all (although they were both included in the game before the announcements of
Diablo 3 and
Starcraft 2 -- maybe Blizzard is working on a Pandaren-based puzzle game? Conspiracy theorists, assemble!). And just because we all have
Grunty doesn't mean murlocs are suddenly going to take to spaceships with battle rifles in the official lore. But it's cool to see Pandaren actually in the game, even in pet form, and who knows, maybe we will one day find the legendary realm of Pandaria in our own version of Azeroth.

It's a "hot potato" if Blizzard is culturally incensitive, and dresses them in Japanese style clothing or makes them generic oriental stereotypes.
Blizzard is smart enough not to do that again. They discussed this at the Austin 2006 GDC. As you can see, the Pandaren all now dress in Chinese clothing.

I'd bet my soul we'll see Pandarens as a playable race someday. It might not be within the next year or 2, or ever 5... but someday, it will happen.
RetPallyJil Nov 8th 2009 7:17PM
For God's sake people, drop it. Pandaren are stupid, and pandas aren't that cute :P
Yeah, I said it.

Of course! The inclusion of a massive in-joke as a vanity pet must point to a new in-joke based game! Especially considering that they added a Mini Diablo and StarCraft-themed pet into the game as well, and there are more Diablo and StarCraft games being released! Forget the fact that they are Blizzard's most profitable IP's before WoW, IT'S ALL A CONSPIRACY!
If anything the modern age has brought is bad, it's that now everyone looks for things that aren't there.
xnn Nov 8th 2009 10:46PM
I think rather it is not the modern age, but the nature of humanity. Our brain is such that it attempts to find patterns, organization, and connections. Sometimes it attempts to make such a connection when one does not actually exist.

I've said irt before, but if the pandaren ever become a playable race and this

isn't their dance, i will be a.. well.. sad panda.
FifthDream Nov 8th 2009 7:42PM
Yeah... except for all the alcohol-based quests, jokes, and holidays already in WoW. ;P

Reply fail. Meant for Ves. Vote number 83943748363826633 for comment system overhaul.

Did you miss Blizzard removing every quest and portion of the Brewmaster meta that required you to comsume alcohol?
Lemming Nov 8th 2009 8:11PM
Ves,
They did no such thing. they removed ONE Brewfest quest that involved pink elekks in Europe only. There are still drinking achievements (including non-Brewfest related) and the whole festival of Brewfest in the game for all.
Ves Nov 8th 2009 8:25PM
Have you not seen this yet?

Adam Nov 8th 2009 10:44PM
Except that "Down with the Dark Iron" and "Does your Wolpertinger linger?" in fact do require you to drink.
Ves Nov 9th 2009 1:08AM
They don't.
For Down with the Dark Iron, you don't have to drink anything. You just need to show up after someone else has stopped the attackers and pick up the quest from the cog.
Getting a Wolpertinger just requires you to give a vendor 50 silver in Europe.

Who gives a shit about China? You don't see Indians crying out that cows are killable, and thats a holy creature you aren't even supposed to touch IRL.
They just haven't found a good place/reason for Pandaren to pop up. I'm hoping against all hope that a little faction with giant rewards will pop up in Cataclysm..
busuan Nov 8th 2009 8:06PM
The next playable race?
Dragonkin!
Comparing with the burden (and suffering!) Titans bestowed upon dragons, all the mortal races' QQ are pitiful.
Heck, make it a heroic race!
