In among all of the
"omg fake pets for real money" drama from
this week's announcement, we may have missed something big:
the Pandaren are now live in the
World of Warcraft. The Pandaren are my favorite Azerothian race, even though they're essentially a joke --
Samwise Didier just loves pandas, and he made art for
an April Fool's joke that Chris Metzen loved so much they decided to include the bears as
real characters in Warcraft III. Since then, they've become fan favorites (not least of all, especially for me, because alcohol and ale are a big part of their culture), but we've only seen
hints of them in
World of Warcraft. There was a rumor going around a while back that they would never appear in the game
because China didn't allow depictions of violence against the bears, but that was just a rumor. Still, the Pandaren have existed in
WoW only as a Blizzard in-joke. We assume they're out there somewhere, but until now, no one has ever seen one.
Of course we say "until now" because there are now little Pandaren monk noncombat pets running around, bowing, and
doing magical kung-fu. Does this mean that
the future Emerald Dream expansion will have us all playing as Brewmasters? While yes that would be awesome, not so fast again:
Diablo and the
Zergling from
Starcraft are both in the game as noncombat pets, and they don't mean anything at all (although they were both included in the game before the announcements of
Diablo 3 and
Starcraft 2 -- maybe Blizzard is working on a Pandaren-based puzzle game? Conspiracy theorists, assemble!). And just because we all have
Grunty doesn't mean murlocs are suddenly going to take to spaceships with battle rifles in the official lore. But it's cool to see Pandaren actually in the game, even in pet form, and who knows, maybe we will one day find the legendary realm of Pandaria in our own version of Azeroth.

Chen & Rexxar's adventures were super cool fun in WCIII. It was like a Warcraft buddy movie.

Not entirely sure the Pandaren race will never make an appearance. While our "darling" little squire could be a stretch, most of us also own either a curious oracle hatchling or a wolvar pup. Both of which belong to factions in WotLK. My money is that Pandaren will eventually come in as a neutral race, but not in Cataclysm, the expansion after. Why? It is my dearest of dear hope that when Garrosh takes stage in xpac, he and Varian will have an all out open war that shatters both Alliance AND Horde. From that rubble, emerges the survivors who will then turn to the Pandaren to teach them three priciple things: Peace, how to make kick ass ale, and how to kick the next big threat to Azeroth's behind into the next dimension. Honestly, who doesn't want to destroy/corrupt/eat/make pink sweaters for the people of Azeroth?

There's a bit of evidence that the next hero class might be a Monk. If that turns out to be true, then a starting area where you've been trained by an ancient Pandarian order in a monastery in the mountains might actually work and would be a reasonable way to work them in without having to make them a playable race and assign them to a specific faction.

Sorry, the next hero class will not be a melee class. It will be a ranged caster/healer for balance.

I'm thinking the Pandarens are the next neutral npc race. Like the Tuskaar to WOTLK, the Pandarens would work fine with Cataclysm. What better way to force the secretive Pandarens out of hiding, and into the world then the world itself being ripped apart.

The more I think about the globe in HoL I think it is incomplete. the further south you go the hotter it gets: northrend: icy, northern kalimdor/eastern kingdoms: temperate/a little icy, central kalimdor/eastern kingdoms: jungle and or swamp, southern kalimdor/eastern kingdoms: desert. so by this i assume azaroth's equator is around southern kalimdor/eastern kingdoms, so there is a whole lot of planet down south that could have big continents or just islands, maybe a southrend? a large archipelago? Panderia? Not to mention the other sea west of kalimdor/ east of eastern kingdoms.
Anyway to sum up, there could be many places that the pandarian could be hiding. Seeing them as an NPC faction would be awesome. As for a playable race furbogs make more sense.

it would be nice to have more real estate in Azeroth, but I have to point out that there are large deserts in South Africa, Chile, and Australia, all of which are pretty far south.

Azeroth/the Warcraft universe is a fantasy world, after all. For all we know, Azeroth's sun could indeed be just a minor-sized celestial body orbitting the planet. With a southern-tilted orbit, the missing "could south" would be explained.
Snuzzle Nov 9th 2009 10:41AM
@themightysven all of those continents, though more southern than the US and Europe, are in fact close to the equator and so warm deserts make sense. The band across the earth's midsection where temperatures are warm is quite large, but as you approach either pole it rapidly gets cold. For example, the deserts in Austrailia rarely get warmer than 104F in the summer, and that's around the max temps we here in Connecticut get in the summer, too.
The fact is, though, that the continents on Azeroth do not follow any real geological temperature zones that I can follow. They seem to be more or less random (the chilly Dun Morogh around the middle of EK, for example.) However, I think the strange temperature zones can be explained by the devastation wrought in many parts of the world (ie, Dun Morogh is right next to the Searing Gorge which got burned up when Ragnaros was summoned).

Looking at the cup half full, maybe we will finally see the Monk class coming soon?
Kaillas Nov 8th 2009 11:30PM
Just me, or does this news seem a little old and outdated. The pets broke on the 4th, and you just now realized they are in game and can have them? Or did I miss part of the story...Was this just a filler story you had to toss in, and decided now was the best time for it?
Amaxe Nov 9th 2009 1:33AM
I'm guessing you missed the huge argument we had on whether or not paying for the pets was a good thing or not?
Michael Nov 9th 2009 1:50AM
Am I the only one that remembers the Pandaren at the end of Blackfathom Deeps that dissapred for about three patches and I believe has since been replaced by a dwarf.
Snuzzle Nov 9th 2009 10:44AM
Yes. I did BFD so much on my night elf in Vanilla, and never remember seeing a Pandaren. When the hell was this ?
Snuzzle Nov 9th 2009 10:46AM
Yes. I did that instance so much on my night elf in Vanilla, and never remember seeing a Pandaren. When the hel was this?
Mark Bradley Nov 9th 2009 2:15AM
Oh man. I have so badly wanted a playable Pandaren for years. It hurts me every time there is a tease, a possibility, and then I remember Blizz saying 'nah, it's all non-canon'. Man, though... I would pay a premium to play a Pandaren. I betcha a female Pandaren would be dang sexy, too.

HURRRR Let's infer that all the people upset over microtransactions in WoW are just causing drama DERRRRRRRRRRRR
Wow, way to be a prick. Thanks, WoW.com, for completely belittling the concerns of your readers.

Sorry, the next hero class will not be another melee class. It will be a ranged caster/healer for balance.
Wolftech Nov 9th 2009 9:04AM
Disregard. This is a reply to another post that went astray.
atomicstrawberry Nov 9th 2009 9:07AM
No reason why a monk class wouldn't be a healer / dps hybrid.
