Blizzard pet store now regional

While it's a curious move on the surface, it effectively restricts players from Europe purchasing their Pandaren Monk and Lil' K.T. from the US store where the pets are cheaper at $10 compared to €10 or £10 in the EU (roughly $15). Interestingly enough, the pets are priced at ₩12,000 in the Korean version of the store, which is about the same price as in the US ($10.3). It's unclear why the European version of the pets -- along with a few other Blizzard store items -- are more expensive, a fact that makes Turpster huff and puff and blow Azerothian houses down.
Obvious business reasons aside, it also creates a minor inconvenience for people who would like to give the pets as gifts to players in other regions. However, considering that many vanity pet codes have been regional in the past, such as those given away during Blizzard special events, it's not a surprising move. Then again, this whole foray into microtransactions was a bit of a surprise, so we've learned to never underestimate those folks from Irvine.

As a UK player myself, this is a major point of contention for me. Why do we have to pay more simply because we are in the EU? It doesn't make sense. It's not just a small difference either, the price for us is 150% what people over in the US pay!
Frankly, if the price was equal and I could get my pet for about £6 (roughly the same as $10) I would have quite happily forked over for my pandaren monk by now. I just feel that £9 for a mini pet is pretty exorbitant, and on principle I refuse to pay an extra 50% just because I'm European.

Probably because Blizz has to collect and remit VAT taxes in the EU/UK and they don't have to collect and remit them in the US.
Just a thought.
Gunder Nov 9th 2009 3:13PM
Yeah because everyone known VAT is 50% in EU right? -_-"
Turlagh Nov 9th 2009 8:49PM
Simple solution. Move to the U.S. Americans are impressed by British accents and you can get a really good paying job because of it. So you can easily afford the mini-pet.

Indeed, I shall not be able to afford a lump of coal this christmas for my family.
Aaaaaand Tiny Tim shall no doubt die of starvation and a gimpy leg.
Oh you're a mean one, Mr. Blizzard!!!

Almost everything is priced differently in Europe compared to the US (this is just more transparent). This is because of different price levels. This is why BigMacs are priced differently across the world, and why there are zones on movies. Europeans can (on average) pay more, therefore the prices are higher.
On a related note, cost is very raraly the basis for pricing. Most businesses price their products according to demand, ie they take the price that gives them the maximum profit.

You know, if the dollar were stronger than the euro, Blizz would still be charging 10 , and Europe would be laughing their asses off at Americans complaining about paying "more".
Suck it up.

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of hearing the european WoW community complain about EVERY aspect of blizzard's real-world presence.

This shouldn't be rated down.
Blizzard almost certainly doesn't have to pay any kind of sales tax or other taxes on the sale of pets in the US.
They have to pay a VAT for every sale in the UK and Europe.
Gunder Nov 9th 2009 5:09PM
well VAT IS 25% max in the EU so that is certainly the cause of the 50% increase in price.
I love math!

Well, the exchange rate has been kicking around 1.4 for the last few months and has been near 1.25 earlier this year. It only hit 1.5 today. Assuming 20% VAT (pretty common), and a 1.4 exchange rate:
10E (8.33E + 1.66E VAT) = $11.66+ $2.32 for VAT
In British Pounds exchanged at 1.6 with a 17.5% VAT (staring Jan 2010), it's:
9 GBP = 7.66 + 1.34 VAT = $12.25 + $2.14 VAT.
Might should be 9E and 8GBP to be "fair", but I don't see 50%..

Steam uses the same 1:1 conversion. Modern Warfare 2 is 59,99€... about 80$... ¬_¬

Set all the QQ about $10/pet aside for a moment.
In addition to buying Virtual items with Real money, how about allowing us to buy Real stuff with Virtual gold? Say a discount coupon from your local friendly momnpop store for 1000 gold?
...Or Mountain Dew 12-pack.

In EVE Online you can purchase game-time with large amounts of in-game currency.

Dunno about the ideas you suggested, but i can imagine that 1000g for another months play would be a godsend for some people who cant afford the money in RL but are loaded and skilled in wow.
Then again, I doubt this will ever happen. It would mean a lot less subscription fees for blizzard.
