Yeah, here at the WoW.com high-rise, we were all a little surprised by the announcement of the
Pet Store and its microtransactionalized non-combat pets -- but seriously,
it's not that big a deal, people. Hitch your bandwagons to that slippery slope fallacy all you want, but pets offer no plausible in-game advantage. The whole experience is roughly equivalent to buying a TCG pet off of eBay, just slightly more convenient and reasonably easier to live with.
Anyway, of course the forums are mad about it, or at least the incredibly vocal minority on the forums is. And they've made post after post about how the Pet Store has completely ruined
WoW. Well, official forums MVP Palehoof has a rebuttal, and it's the largest green wall this side of Fenway Park.
If you want a rundown of just how many times
WoW has been "ruined" by an addition, deletion, or alteration to the game, you can
read Palehoof's post on the official forums.

OMG his post was HI.Larious :-) There's always something to complain about, I guess.

Something to complain about like 3.2 only having totcx4 with same looking gear? That's so awesome, I always wanted to gave gear that looks like a resto druid's.
Also I'm so looking forward to all that wonderful looking Icrecrown gear. I always dreamed of killing Arthas and getting a bean sack with a hole off him to wear as a helm. This actually doesn't ruin the game, since it's a lot more plausible for Arthas to have a raggy geist mask on him rather than some great looking Rogue helm that would make me actually feel that the subscription was worth it.
(and before you throw in the classical: "You don't like it, GTFO" phrase, the entire reason I bought this game was to see Icecrown and confront Arthas. I'm definitively not renewing my game card after that)

I miss the real writers for wow.com

Old threads are old.
Nothing to see here, people.

"(adjective) (noun) is (adjective)" is even older. That shit doesn't impress anyone anymore.

It's the end of the World (of Warcraft) as we know it.
Feeling fine here. :)

I saw that post a few days ago and it indeed did make me laugh.
You don't have to buy the pets and someone who does isn't going to have any advantage in raids or PvP that you don't, so let them.
If blizzard starts selling gear for real money then i'll quit WoW on that day. When someone with cash can progress faster than someone with skill, somethings up, but when someone with a bit of money to spare on things they like can get an entirely cosmetic item in the game, well that's fine by me because i don't have to buy it to play effectively.
Thetealone Nov 9th 2009 10:38AM
I completely agree, but I'm sure that there is no way blizzard is willing to take it that far. Seeing as how people are cying about pets which are less aesthetic then one's race they may be hesitant to step up any further, meaning mounts/tabards/fun items(party grenade anyone?). Although I would love to see these items hit the store it will probably never happen. Because of QQers and how will they sell those stupid cards if they dont make them exclusive to something.
I was hoping oneday for a stop to gold farmers, blizzards own attempt at "selling gold" but they couldnt do this out right or it would break everything they fight... but the simple fact is that there is such a huge demand that the chineese gold farming bizz is making.. what was the last wow.com post estimate.. 10 billion?
My idea would for them to just sell a differnt type of gold.. gold with the same value, but only spendable at vendors. Not tradeable, nor usable at the Auction House. So pretty much it would be used for spell training/mount training, repairs, food/water, and other vendor cost a player would have. I'm betting the largest majority of gold bought is used for mount skills. My shameful purchase a year ago was for this reason (which i still regret) this isnt so much to please the players as to put a hurt on farmers. The demand is there.. someone needs to fill it, warning/bans are not working. (oops i was ranting)

/pizza
lol that's EQ2 did that
jorge_av Nov 9th 2009 9:19AM
Wall 'o green.
But I'm with that one guy a few posts afterward. There is/was a /pizza emote? Or was Palehoof trying to be more sarcastic than usual?
Mike Nov 9th 2009 10:11AM
There is, the emote says you're hungry.
Hansbo Nov 9th 2009 10:46AM
Yeah, the /pizza was put in EQ2 as a marketing ploy. It basically opened up a website where you could order delivery pizza. Blizzard, of course, had to parody this in some way =)
On a related topic, did you guys read that thread? It still surprises me to this day how many internet bad boys and generally douches on the general forums.
Tri Nov 9th 2009 9:24AM
After reading all that, I now see black and white stripes before my eyes... O.o
But, gotta agree with him :) Some people don't like change...

WoW's destruction is inevitable, as are all MMO's, because players are a fickle bunch. Personally I think the game is more accessible than ever before, and indeed some aspects of WoW need improvement (the devs have acknowledged this on many occasions). But one thing anyone in business understands is, the next big thing is indeed always just around the corner.
Myspace got cocky, now you have Facebook.
Yahoo got complacent, now you Google.
AOL got overconfident, now you have... the Internet without using AOL!
Lessons aplenty for those who are paying attention.
travis Nov 9th 2009 9:49AM
INC! WALL OF TEXT!
People always say this. But there was tons of MMOs that were suppose to beat WoW (WAR, Aion, to name to recent few), but they never did. In the game world, a company that has been going at it for a while (5 years) and has been doing a great job isn't just going to bet crushed. They know what they are doing. Plus people have invested time and money into Warcraft. Also many people know the lore and they like it, they want to see whats going to happen next, even if it does mean Tauren Paladins. How much money have you invested in wow? Lets assume you have been playing for 2 years, that's $360, not to mention $75+ for the game/xpac/xpac. If you have been playing for 5 years, as I have, you have spent around $900 (even as I type that, that number shocks me).
Now when you talk of MySpace/Yahoo/AOL, how much money did you invest in those companies? Zero (well, maybe AOL, but that's besides the point).
World of Warcraft will continue to be a great success as long as they have new expansions, content patches, and cater to all levels of players. (On that last note, games like WAR catered more towards pvp and some RP while games like Aion are almost completely devoted toward pve (8+ Hour raiding with no chance of leaving and coming back the next day)).
