Yeah, here at the WoW.com high-rise, we were all a little surprised by the announcement of the
Pet Store and its microtransactionalized non-combat pets -- but seriously,
it's not that big a deal, people. Hitch your bandwagons to that slippery slope fallacy all you want, but pets offer no plausible in-game advantage. The whole experience is roughly equivalent to buying a TCG pet off of eBay, just slightly more convenient and reasonably easier to live with.
Anyway, of course the forums are mad about it, or at least the incredibly vocal minority on the forums is. And they've made post after post about how the Pet Store has completely ruined
WoW. Well, official forums MVP Palehoof has a rebuttal, and it's the largest green wall this side of Fenway Park.
If you want a rundown of just how many times
WoW has been "ruined" by an addition, deletion, or alteration to the game, you can
read Palehoof's post on the official forums.

@travis: i'm not at all shocked by how much i've spent on wow's monthly subscription. do you pay for cable? try adding that up and get ready to be shocked even more. as it is, i don't pay for cable, my only subscription-based entertainment venues are wow and netflix...not a bad deal at all
Eternauta Nov 9th 2009 11:13AM
@Travis: you're totally right!
@Sinnh: The difference between cable and mmo's is that there isn't such thing as "progression" in cable.
If you all of a sudden switch from WoW to, say, EQ2, you can't transfer your characters (and all the stuff they carry with them) from one game to another. You start from ZERO, after 2 or 5 years of progression and money invested into it.

@Travis
FYI: Aion is not focused on PVE at all... they don't even have any instances that take more than 6 people (standard group size in Aion) to clear yet. It is a heavily PVP focused game with RVR action 1 time a day where you do some PvPvE stuff. PVE is horrible in that game.

I love that we live in a world where you already know people will have douche-like answers to your simple question. The Internet is great, isn't it?
I believe it's because he's an MVP...but that's all I know. I'm not even sure what an MVP is or when they started showing up in the forums.
Dreadskull Nov 9th 2009 9:37AM
You... do know that thread is locked and was posted days ago, right?
Veranilla Nov 9th 2009 9:39AM
I too was wondering about that.
Back when voice chat went live I was having major video issues and spent a lot of time on the tech support forum. A poster provided a lot of answers and "support" -- he also licked tech support boot heels like no one's business. Last month I was cruising the support forum and lo and behold, he now had green text and a personalized portrait.

Can the people that constantly complain about WoW being ruined because of microtransitions just quit the game already so we can all /bow at my Pandaren Monk.
relmatos Nov 9th 2009 9:42AM
You cant say there is no advantage. There is an advantage to people who collect companions.
Also, the biggest problem is that blizzard is using this to introduce "micro"transactions and no one can expect this to be the only kind of transactions they'll introduce.
Maybe the next ones will be a simple constantly rested effect or another BoA that can only be bought with cash.
I dont believe they will introduce bigger stuff like buying levels or buying the possibility to start at top level until the game is dieing. They can however introduce stuff that will make it look as if those who dont spend money are secondary players.
We're already paying to play the game so, anything else should be given free to everyone. I accept that faction\realm\race change should be payable so people wont abuse it. But anything else should be free. Or, remove the monthly payments and introduce all sorts of micro transactions they want.
Also the fact that an independent site takes the time to comment on it just shows how much of a negative publicity this brought to the game.

"You cant say there is no advantage. There is an advantage to people who collect companions."
You're probably right Relmatos. Having lil Kt randomly freeze critters every ~3mins is an advantage.
The people who collect companions are probably pumped up at how easily accessible these are.

The main problem I have with people complaining about this is that we've been able to buy vanity pets, mounts, toys, and other stuff with real money for a long time. It's called the trading card game. 2 or 3 years ago I paid $50 for a hippogryph hatchling card on ebay, which only gets applied to 1 character. With the new Bliz store pets they're not only a lot cheaper but all my characters can have them. Plus the money goes to a good cause - Make a Wish in the case of the Pandaren, or just to Blizzard so they can spend it (hopefully) on making awesome games for us.
Oh yeah, and the game wasn't ruined when the TCG came out either.

and?... I may as well claim that stamp collecting is unfair due to the fact that some stamps are only available to those who.. well spend money... collectables do not impact game play. You are aware of Trading Card pets.. same principle?
Maybe the next ones will be a simple constantly rested effect or another BoA that can only be bought with cash.
yeh. Maybe....

your internal logic is shot. If they were looking to prevent abuse they could do that by 1 a month transfers. They are trying to monetize the service. Nowt wrong with that: the achievements + all the other superfluous gubbins that they've pegged onto the game have nothing to do with the core game play. Your core game play is unaffected by not having a pet pandaren.
Also the fact that an independent site takes the time to comment on it just shows how much of a negative publicity this brought to the game.
or alternatively everyone thought this was a non issue and the bleating of the QQ minority on the forums seems to have no bounds.

"You cant say there is no advantage. There is an advantage to people who collect companions."
True. But all you get from that is an achievement ... which also gets you no in-game benefit.
i2hellfire Nov 9th 2009 9:41AM
mvp's are poster's that have gone above and beyond to be helpful on the boards, and are recognized as such by blizz moderators.
Carrie Nov 9th 2009 9:42AM
Great post. I've been here since the beginning and I remember everything in that post. I'm surprised he didn't start it out with something like server stability, or just "everything about the game" at launch.
Simerguesa Nov 9th 2009 9:46AM
Win!
Unfortunately as long as there are changes to the game, and as long as the internet retains some semblence of anonymity, there will always be people that will speak their mind on what is or is not ruining the game. No matter what you do to make anything better, there will be one person who doesn't like it and has to speak up, to announce to the world (or at least their little forum) their distaste.
relmatos Nov 9th 2009 9:52AM
2 companions if you are willing to pay money is an advantage to people doing the companion achievements. Even if itsnt that big of a deal, it's still an advantage that should not exist.
raingod Nov 9th 2009 9:57AM
Then don't buy em, idiot.
dawnseven Nov 9th 2009 10:11AM
This gets you nothing. Achievement points have no real value and I haven't seen anyone in /trade lately telling people they can't do something without linking their pet achievement.
