Yeah, here at the WoW.com high-rise, we were all a little surprised by the announcement of the
Pet Store and its microtransactionalized non-combat pets -- but seriously,
it's not that big a deal, people. Hitch your bandwagons to that slippery slope fallacy all you want, but pets offer no plausible in-game advantage. The whole experience is roughly equivalent to buying a TCG pet off of eBay, just slightly more convenient and reasonably easier to live with.
Anyway, of course the forums are mad about it, or at least the incredibly vocal minority on the forums is. And they've made post after post about how the Pet Store has completely ruined
WoW. Well, official forums MVP Palehoof has a rebuttal, and it's the largest green wall this side of Fenway Park.
If you want a rundown of just how many times
WoW has been "ruined" by an addition, deletion, or alteration to the game, you can
read Palehoof's post on the official forums.

My thoughts on the matter...
People just always have to find something to complain about.
It's a bind on account pet, if Blizzard was out to do MT for all they're worth then they'd make it a pet that, once learned, is unavailable to other characters on the account.
If Blizz starts making the junk non-BoA, THEN I'll consider agreeing with some of the QQ'ers. At the moment now, all the complaints strike me as more of a "troll" than anything.

If a regular player made a topic like that they would get banned. But since a MVP made it the topic just gets locked since it started a flame war.

When I see someone with an interesting item, what is behind it is often as interesting. Whether it was having the patience, good timing and know-how to read the eight books in Dalaran for the Kirin Tor Familiar, knowing that someone likes to do dailies when you see Sheep or a Tree pet (or just have enough gold and got it in the AH) or went to Blizzcon or watched the broadcast (unless you just got it for the pet. ;P ) Even with the TCG items, it was a luck of the draw.
I hope they continue to put interesting, eye-catching vanity items in the game. If they want to keep the trust of the people cynical of their plans, they will. The pets or mounts don't have to be easy to get, in fact, some of the hard-won ones are appreciated because they give people something to strive for (and are worth the effort).
But if every vanity item they put in the game isn't as good as what they can sell (recolored tree frog, or some snake that just kind of slithers and not much else) then I'll be very disappointed.
And honestly, I also wouldn't mind if none of the purchased items (TCG, Blizzcon, Pet Store) counted toward any achievements. (And yes, I have Grunty, so it would be OK if he didn't count either). While the achievements may not add any advantages, it shows effort and accomplishments, or even just luck and persistence. While raiders may care less, for casual players, those shows of accomplishments can be important. My friend just got the Albino drake and he was very proud of it. I chatted with him as he ground out his Kurenai rep so he could get the Talbuks to count toward the achievements, and once he got it (he was determined to stay on until he got it) he rushed over to show me his new prize. I was going to go for the next pet achievement, but why? Someone can just come along and get it by buying a bunch of stuff. It may happen by my heart isn't in it anymore.
(Thought if they did, they shouldn't take it away from someone who got the achievement with those items).
Having the items have as little effect on the gameplay (yes, even for the most casual of players) I think, would be the best way.
People actually do put a lot of time into getting cool items in game - it's a source of pleasure and pride. Whether its having every holiday outfit, getting the odd drinks in the mail after getting Brew of the Month, or having an appropriate title for their toon. That should not be taken away by someone who got a much cooler item that they can get just by click-fillng in credit card number. They should keep the purchasable pets few. and continue to add even better things that players can get in-game, and resist the temptation to listen to the guy in accounting who says "but why give it away when we can sell it? Just give them a recolored cockroach."
