IgroMir 2009: More Cataclysm guild leveling details
IgroMir is Russia's largest gaming convention -- sort of an Eastern European Electronic Entertainment Expo (E5?) -- and Blizzard made an appearance there this week, showing off World of Warcraft: Cataclysm and Starcraft II. Besides the demo booths, visitors could look forward to panels with J. Allen Brack (the current WoW head honcho) and Chris Sigaty (SC2 grand poobah), trivia contests with the Russian Blizzard CMs, and goblin/worgen leveling contests.
But, of course, here at WoW.com we're mostly interested in Cataclysm news, so let's get right to it, shall we?
In his Cataclysm panel, Brack touched on two subjects -- Tol Barad, the new outdoor PVP zone/quest hub, and the new guild leveling system. The Tol Barad talk was apparently nothing new, but the guild leveling talk had some good information in it. Not everything discussed here is new, but some of it is, so I'll just reiterate what he said.
After the jump, of course.
Your guild will get experience for players earning rep, killing bosses, doing dailies, getting achievements, Arena and BG wins, crafting, leveling up, and more. The top 20 earners in the guild each week will have their contributions turned into XP. Previous contributions won't factor into a particular week's XP, so every member of the guild has the chance to be a top earner each week.
Guild experience, once accrued at the end of each week, will be converted into guild currency, which can be used to buy a myriad of items, including reagents, tabards, pets, profession recipes, heirlooms, and Guild Talent points.
Guild Talents will be things like a Mass Resurrection spell on a 30-minute cooldown, removal of reagents for buff spells, and increased gold drops in the world and instances. Guild leaders can respec guild talents, though the method and cost (if any) is currently unknown.
As your guild levels up, the amount of ingredients necessary for your guild recipes will get cheaper. An example would be lowering the number of Frozen Orbs (or the equivalent) necessary to craft a weapon by your guild blacksmith. The guild interface will also allow you to browse through any and all recipes available in your guild.
Guild-crafted heirlooms will cover every gear slot, according to Brack, and, like any guild-crafted item, will remain bound to the guild. If you leave the guild, your Guild-Bound items will automatically deposit themselves back into the guild bank.
Guild achievements are also in the works, such as an achievement for crafting a legendary, or for getting a certain number of players to the maximum profession level. A guild can also get an achievement automatically if a certain percentage of players in the guild have it too. It's unknown if guild achievements will provide XP or currency.
Brack also noted new Armory improvements for Cataclysm, like RSS feeds for guild news and lists of all available guild recipes.
Lastly, it'll be possible to set up a guild tax so that an adjustable portion of all looted gold goes straight to the guild bank for every member. Further details on the feature are unknown.
Getting a solid recap of the panel has proven difficult, so if any new info's come out that we've missed, we'll be sure to let you know. Blizzard EU should also have an official recap on their IgoMir 2009 page shortly.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.

A Guild Tax? sigh. Just when you thought taxes hadn't reached every aspect of our lives.

If my guild starts charging tax I'm just gonna make a one man guild so i get all the exp i can buy anything i want and go about my business seeing as i don't raid
Verit Nov 9th 2009 12:07PM
I think its a perfectly valid way to generate revenue for a guild.
Back in Lineage 2 - they had a castle system where the ruling guild got to tax EVERYTHING you bought in that zone no matter who it came from or what guild you were in.
Jack Miles Nov 9th 2009 4:44PM
I'm guessing guild tax will only be for raids? Else, that's just.... ewww...
@Verit There are reasons why I'm playing WoW and not lineage 2.

The Guild Tax is worrying.
Haji Nov 9th 2009 11:17AM
Unless I am mistaken I think that they mentioned this "tax" at Blizzcon and it was stated that only gold looted in raids would be taxed.
Foxfyr Nov 9th 2009 11:20AM
If a guild leader enforces a tax you don't like find a new guild.
This will be a feature that guilds can decide on together and I'm sure it is something that some guilds will actually benefit from. Especially ones that allow people to repair from guild funds.
Bryterside Nov 9th 2009 11:21AM
Wouldn't this money probably just go to repairs and materials anyway?
bushkanaka86 Nov 9th 2009 12:13PM
Yikes, everyone is freaking out over nothing.
They said at Blizzcon:
"If at least 75% of your instance group is composed of guildies, then every boss will drop bonus gold that will go to the guild bank."
That is the tax they are talking about. You aren't going to be getting any less gold than usual. This is just a nice way to get gold into the guild bank. Every time a boss dies in a guildie run, the bank gets money. Sounds great to me.
They aren't going to be taking your money from quests, or charging perodic taxes from your "savings". Stop freaking out. It is fine.
Glaras Nov 9th 2009 12:34PM
It *might* go for repairs and materials, but for whom? I know of guilds where the only person allowed to draw on guild funds for repairs was the GM... and he did so.
The guild tax wouldn't bother me so much, if there's a way to guarantee that you're getting something for it. The details are thin, so I'm speculating, but if a raiding guild imposes a tax on its members, and only a small subset of the membership is ever chosen to go on raids (the rest being told they are on "standby", and "your turn will come"), then I can see where the non-chosen guild members never get any real benefit.
I know: they can just leave the guild. But up to the point where these changes take effect, there's no real penalty to leaving. After this, there will be. That is the point, after all.
Illirien Nov 9th 2009 12:39PM
Where do you think the money in your guild bank comes from, anyway? You think just a handful of people should be putting all the gold in for everyone to use? Or perhaps you'd rather just see a zero down there at the bottom.
MightyMuffin Nov 9th 2009 3:53PM
Just to let ya'll know...its human nature to freak out about taxes. Generally, if people hear more taxes, they freak out, thinking the higher-ups have enough money and are just corrupt people who are doing their jobs and should be kicked out. Generous people who want to work towards a common goal are ok, but the masses see taxes, and start pulling out the lolcat pictures that all have some expression of disbelief and outrage.
Jason Nov 9th 2009 11:10AM
It's nice to see that Blizzard is also releasing information across the world at various expos other than BlizzCon or American ones. Thanks for the update - I had no idea this was even going on!
Mooshock Nov 9th 2009 11:53AM
the tax was stated at blizzcon, it does come off everything BUT, it also makes it so mobs drop more money, and that extra money is what goes to the tax, you dont lose any money, they will still drop x gold for you, the extra y gold they drop is what goes to the "tax".
Hulkimania Nov 9th 2009 12:39PM

If this is the case, then I'll set my guild tax to the max amount - the higher the rate, the more money for the guild with no detriment to the members - Can't see how anyone wouldn't charge the max amount - its just free money using those rules.

Alea Iacta Est on Earthen Ring US is going to pwn the guild achievement system. It should be lots of fun.
jbodar Nov 9th 2009 7:39PM
Here's why your comment is so dark:
"The top 20 earners in the guild each week will have their contributions turned into XP. Previous contributions won't factor into a particular week's XP, so every member of the guild has the chance to be a top earner each week."
More members does not automatically translate into success in this system, since only the top 20 count.
Bryterside Nov 10th 2009 11:41AM
I figure, the larger the pool, that the top 20's are picked from, would create better odds at high top 20's. I think I was voted down for AIE hate.
Netara Nov 9th 2009 11:13AM
Guild tax? Gesh,,, I sure hope thats a misstype. Forcing people to donate gold to the guild is a sure sign that your guild is failing
JKWood Nov 9th 2009 11:24AM
Think of it as less of a "you must donate" and more of a "here's an easy way to donate that doesn't require you to run back to the guild bank after every run." If your guild considers setting up the tax, and you don't agree with it, then say so. If they put it in anyway, run off to another guild - they're probably better off without you, anyway.
