IgroMir 2009: More Cataclysm guild leveling details
IgroMir is Russia's largest gaming convention -- sort of an Eastern European Electronic Entertainment Expo (E5?) -- and Blizzard made an appearance there this week, showing off World of Warcraft: Cataclysm and Starcraft II. Besides the demo booths, visitors could look forward to panels with J. Allen Brack (the current WoW head honcho) and Chris Sigaty (SC2 grand poobah), trivia contests with the Russian Blizzard CMs, and goblin/worgen leveling contests.
But, of course, here at WoW.com we're mostly interested in Cataclysm news, so let's get right to it, shall we?
In his Cataclysm panel, Brack touched on two subjects -- Tol Barad, the new outdoor PVP zone/quest hub, and the new guild leveling system. The Tol Barad talk was apparently nothing new, but the guild leveling talk had some good information in it. Not everything discussed here is new, but some of it is, so I'll just reiterate what he said.
After the jump, of course.
Your guild will get experience for players earning rep, killing bosses, doing dailies, getting achievements, Arena and BG wins, crafting, leveling up, and more. The top 20 earners in the guild each week will have their contributions turned into XP. Previous contributions won't factor into a particular week's XP, so every member of the guild has the chance to be a top earner each week.
Guild experience, once accrued at the end of each week, will be converted into guild currency, which can be used to buy a myriad of items, including reagents, tabards, pets, profession recipes, heirlooms, and Guild Talent points.
Guild Talents will be things like a Mass Resurrection spell on a 30-minute cooldown, removal of reagents for buff spells, and increased gold drops in the world and instances. Guild leaders can respec guild talents, though the method and cost (if any) is currently unknown.
As your guild levels up, the amount of ingredients necessary for your guild recipes will get cheaper. An example would be lowering the number of Frozen Orbs (or the equivalent) necessary to craft a weapon by your guild blacksmith. The guild interface will also allow you to browse through any and all recipes available in your guild.
Guild-crafted heirlooms will cover every gear slot, according to Brack, and, like any guild-crafted item, will remain bound to the guild. If you leave the guild, your Guild-Bound items will automatically deposit themselves back into the guild bank.
Guild achievements are also in the works, such as an achievement for crafting a legendary, or for getting a certain number of players to the maximum profession level. A guild can also get an achievement automatically if a certain percentage of players in the guild have it too. It's unknown if guild achievements will provide XP or currency.
Brack also noted new Armory improvements for Cataclysm, like RSS feeds for guild news and lists of all available guild recipes.
Lastly, it'll be possible to set up a guild tax so that an adjustable portion of all looted gold goes straight to the guild bank for every member. Further details on the feature are unknown.
Getting a solid recap of the panel has proven difficult, so if any new info's come out that we've missed, we'll be sure to let you know. Blizzard EU should also have an official recap on their IgoMir 2009 page shortly.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.

its IgroMir, not igomir.
Pirim Nov 9th 2009 11:39AM
This. Dear WoW.com, typos in headings are bad, even if they are just typos. Игромир = Igromir, no reason to skip that third letter.
Pirim Nov 9th 2009 3:18PM
On Blizzard's page the word is transliterated correctly and is written in quite big letters :)
Fact-checking rules.

Tremelizzer Nov 9th 2009 2:18PM
You know, everybody here can speak russian or use those strange letters.

How is guild tax worrying? Guilds will be providing more and more functionality to it's members. If a guild is charging too much of a tax, leave and find one that isn't. With all the forthcoming benefits to being in a good guild, it only makes sense that a tax be added.
Mr. Tastix Nov 9th 2009 12:02PM
Agreed. Seriously, I try to contribute when I can to my guild but having X percent taken from my total earnings probably won't kill me in the long run. In fact, I'd rather it happen because that way I know I'm at least helping my guild out even a little.
This is vanilla WoW or even TBC anymore guys. You can easily get 300-400g a day unlike in The Burning Crusade where you averaged 80-120g a day. I'm willing to bet it was worse in vanilla WoW, but I can't say I would know.

No, Just no.
jealouspirate Nov 9th 2009 11:17AM
I can't imagine a lot of guilds will actually enforce a tax on members. Or at least I can't expect mine would... Depending on the percentage and what it's used for, it could potentially be grounds for leaving a guild.
jaggie Nov 9th 2009 11:17AM
The guild tax is off of looted gold? I don't see that being a big problem, I get my gold from dailies and gathering. But if your guild has to tax its members for money, thats a sign of bigger problems, imo.
jbodar Nov 9th 2009 9:51PM
Yes, "looted gold" implies to me that dailies and mailed (AH) money would remain untouched. Who knows, it may only apply to raid gold looted, which would make sense so you wouldn't have a situation where non-raiders are funding the repairs of the raiders -- a possible situation in mixed/semi-casual guilds. That's a recipe for drama.

It's called IgroMir,not IgoMir
aboozan Nov 9th 2009 11:18AM
Didn't at Blizzcon they said there weren't going to be taxes just addition gold/silver/copper that wouldn't be there otherwise go to guild bank?
Neirin Nov 9th 2009 11:30AM
I think what they meant was that since you get increased gold from being with your guild (from the guild talents) that it all balances out.
For those saying that there's a bigger problem if you have to tax members I have 2 words: guild repairs. If you spend a night wiping and have to pay 200g in repairs, wouldn't you rather that money came from the combined effort of the whole guild than straight out of your pocket? Think of it like insurance.
Sarakin Nov 9th 2009 11:18AM
didn't they say before that it wasn't a guild tax but that a percentage could be sent to the bank but it wouldn't take away from the players gold gains? Not sure though. I assume it would only effect raids and who makes money in raids anyway?
kv83 Nov 9th 2009 11:22AM
As far as I know, and what was told at the last BlizzCon, the GuildTax works that you receive the full amount on your char and that 10% of that value ALSO will be donated to the guildbank (e.g.: You loot 1g, and 10% of it (10s) will go to the guildbank aswell, making you loot basically 1g10s!)
wizzums Nov 9th 2009 11:29AM
If this were true, then why would it be adjustable? Why wouldn't you ALWAYS want it set to the maximum amount of tax possible? It would literally be free gold.
Snuzzle Nov 9th 2009 12:20PM
@Wizzums, maybe because not everyone has a guild bank ... or not every guild needs the extra gold. Right now, our guild bank is maxed out on tabs, and we've got several grand just sitting in there, doing nothing.
We don't raid heavily, so we don't use it for repairs or mats. We don't need any more tabs, and we don't really have any real guild expenses to speak of. Occasionally someone used to grab 50g here or there to respec when we needed a certain role for a fun raid, but with dual specs even that now is gone out the window.
Now, that said, if the gold was essentially "free gold" that came from a guild tax, instead of guild that gets deposited from (and subtracted from) guildies' pockets, I can see myself making a lot more use from it. A lowbie mount fund, contest rewards, a "get your ass dual spec" fund, buying purple patterns and gear for the guild bank, things like that.
kv83 Nov 9th 2009 1:09PM
@wizzums: Because it was just like a talent point on the presentation of Blizz. Spending points in that "guild talent" in favor of another surely makes you ask if you want "free rez" or "guild tax", right? :)
Deadly. Off. Topic. Nov 9th 2009 2:53PM
If it's maxed out, then the guild tax is really not a useful feature for your specific guild then if have 7 grand just laying around collecting dust.
