Guild tax? Gesh,,, I sure hope thats a misstype. Forcing people to donate gold to the guild is a sure sign that your guild is failing

Think of it as less of a "you must donate" and more of a "here's an easy way to donate that doesn't require you to run back to the guild bank after every run." If your guild considers setting up the tax, and you don't agree with it, then say so. If they put it in anyway, run off to another guild - they're probably better off without you, anyway.
