The Queue: Well rested weekend

Another week, another Queue. There's a few good questions today, including the first about rested XP and heirlooms.
Let's get into it.
Shibdaddy asked...
"Is the amount of bonus xp received from BOA items effected by whether or not you are in a rested state?"
Yes. If you'd normally get 1000 XP from a normal mob, you'd get 2000 XP from a mob with rested bonus. If you have two heirlooms (giving you 20% more), you'd get 2400 XP.
Kilcin asks...
"What is the most economic way to get the tokens needed for the heirloom leveling bonus equipment solo? My guild is incapable of running any instances, my friends aren't playing till 3.3 comes out and the only reason I'm playing is to prepare for a new character once Cataclysm comes out. Should I not waste my time since I lack the support and resources, or should I suck it up to deal with PUGs to get what I want?"
The best way is through doing the Argent Tournament dailies, although you'll need to become a champion of every city in order to access the quartermaster. Running Wintergrasp every week is also an easy way collect Stone Keeper Shards, and they pile up quickly enough.
Once patch 3.3 hits the live servers running heroic pugs will be insanely easy. You'll never have any shortage of badges then, and you'll be able to buy heirlooms at your whim.
Also, Kilcin asked some other very good questions, and we'll get to those in future editions of The Queue.
TyKell asks...
"Does anyone know if patch 3.3 is going to have a cinematic for it like the Black Temple one for BC?"
It hasn't been released yet, but I'd put money on that it will be coming out sometime soon.
Xanedris asks...
"I've chosen the Oracles for my first two 80s. Why should I choose the Frenzyheart for #3?"
You shouldn't in my opinion. Once you get the Green Proto-Drake from the Oracles you don't really need the Orcales rep -- assuming you're not using any of their gear still (which you probably arn't). However with the Frenzyheart rep you can get a Disgusting Jar, which has useful things like potions in it that are going to be helpful for years to come, especially if you send those potions to alts to use while leveling.

XP bonus from two heirlooms should be 121%?...
Cataca Nov 9th 2009 4:16PM
Huh?
20% of 2000exp = 400exp from heirlooms
2000+400=2400exp total
Where did you get 121%?
Adam Holisky Nov 9th 2009 4:21PM
It's not an iterative process. It doesn't go:
100% * 110% = 110%.
110% * 110% = 121%
As far as I know. Although I'm 99% sure I've heard GC comment on this before, but I don't have it off hand. Happy to be corrected though if proof is offered.
Ratskinmahoney Nov 9th 2009 4:27PM
110% of 100 gives 110
110% of 110 gives 121
I would guess that they don't stack like that, though I'm curious to know if anyone knows otherwise.
Bvannas Nov 9th 2009 4:27PM
When i tested XP bonus Experimentally I found that the bonuses do stack, so would be 121%,
Ratskinmahoney Nov 9th 2009 4:31PM
ugh. now i look like a retard, especially since it took me an extra six minutes to write mine. I'm in the UK, I blame it on the time difference...
Suzushiro Nov 9th 2009 4:32PM
He's thinking that the heirloom bonuses are multiplicative rather than additive, so the multiplier would be (1.0*1.1*1.1)=1.21 rather than (1.0+.1+.1)=1.2.
To my knowledge, the heirloom bonuses are additive as well as other experience mods besides rested (like the Wintergrasp buff,) while the rested bonus is multiplicative with experience gains after any other modifiers. I could be completely wrong on this, though.
Adam Holisky Nov 9th 2009 4:33PM
According to this post by Zarhym, the total XP bonus is 20% (and subsequently 25% with the ring), which indicates an additive process rather than a multiplicative (ie: I'm right). Although I still welcome evidence that I'm wrong ("I tested it and I say you're wrong" isn't evidence).

It's the difference of additive or multiplicative.
If it was all additive, it should be 120% added to normal, or 1000exp (normal) + (1000exp (rested) +100 exp (heirloom1) + 100 exp (heirloom2) = 2200exp
If it were all multiplicative, it should be 121% added to normal, or 1000exp (normal) + 1000exp (rested) + 200exp (heirloom1) + 220exp (heirloom2) = 2420exp
The article's answer of 2400exp is actually a 140% addition to normal experience. This assumes that heirloom items are multiplicative towards rested experience, but additive towards each other.
I can't speak as to which version is correct as I have not done testing on this, but this is where the confusion comes from.
tatsumasa Nov 9th 2009 4:43PM
seriously, does it really matter that much? are you going to be like, 'it's 120% instead of 121%? that's bullshit and i won't buy the heirlooms!'
killing stuff and questing gives you xp. if you're rested, you'll get more xp. if you have an heirloom item, it goes even faster. and if you're unwilling to buy a friend to get the 300% for recruit a friend, then getting two heirlooms while being rested is the fastest you'll get until next xpac. a percent here or there really doesn't matter.
Clydtsdk-Rivendare Nov 9th 2009 5:16PM
@tatsumasa
Total experience 1-80 is "24,067,200" (from wowwiki)
1% of that is 240,672 XP. That's your first 22 levels, give or take some.
Ruth Nov 9th 2009 8:27PM
Arktic - What you miss there is that the heirloom bonus is applied BEFORE the rested bonus. Therefore with two heirloom pieces, shoulders and chest, you're doubling 120% [(100% + 20%) x2 = 240%], not doubling 100% and adding another 20% [(100% x 2) + 20% = 220%].
LilBanshee Nov 10th 2009 7:59AM
@Ruth: It doesn't matter what order you do multiplication in.
100% * 200% * 120% = 240%
100% * 120% * 200% = 240%
You don't 'add' 20%, you multiply by 120%. Arktic was dead-on with his explanation of the additive and multiplicative properties that that would be used to find the 240% figure vs the 242% figure.
donmolu Nov 9th 2009 4:07PM
Is the new LFG feature going to work with classic dungeons? I'd really love to level up an alt by running mostly old 5 mans, like BRD or ST, but its almost impossible on live realms.
Raynier Nov 9th 2009 4:14PM
It will work with all dungeons, regardless of expansion. (Provided, of course, that you have the expansions installed. If you don't have any of the expansions, you'll only get to run classic instances via this feature.)
Also, characters will not have access to higher-level instances via the new LFG system until they have geared/leveled to an appropriate minimum for that content.
snowleopard233 Nov 9th 2009 4:08PM
Yay! Time traveling baby is back!
Andrew R. Nov 9th 2009 4:10PM
The LFG is for every instance. New and old. The idea is for people with alts to find a group for the lower level dungeons with ease and for the 80's to find groups to run the heroics.
Cyanea Nov 9th 2009 4:17PM
Where does that picture come from?
Newchron Nov 9th 2009 5:09PM
It's one of WoW.com's editor's family. The picture from 82 is of his wife. The picture from 2009 is his daughter.
Beatphreek Nov 9th 2009 4:55PM
Yep, that's Zach Yonzon's wife and kiddo.
