The WoW comic leading into Cataclysm (spoilers)

The Wrath storyline factored heavily into the official WoW comics, albeit slightly late, and continues to do so with the release of the upcoming Thassarian manga. And now it looks like it's headed on a collision course with the storyline to Cataclysm! Ogre-turned-Liefeldian-monstrosity Cho'gall recites a prophecy in the latest issue related heavily to the Old Gods, Mary Sue shamagadin Med'an, and the Elemental Planes. BlizzPlanet has a pretty good writeup of what the prophecy could mean and its consequences down the road, but I'll give you a brief summary here, too.
Of course, I'll toss it after the jump for those inclined to avoid spoilers. Ready?
Cho'gall, empowered by C'Thun, says that when the child of three worlds, Med'an, becomes "of Light" -- dies, in the vernacular -- then the barrier between the Elemental Planes and terrestrial Azeroth will shatter and they'll begin to merge. Well, we certainly know that the merger (or, more fittingly, hostile takeover) happens, so it stands to reason that Med'an will die. I figured Deathwing just did it himself, but I guess there's more to it. It could also lend credence to the rumor that Thrall becomes the new Guardian of Tirisfal, despite Med'an's recent infusion of Guardian power.
Let me get on my soapbox for just a minute here.
To be frank, I like the concept of Med'an -- a mixed-breed in a world where the most we usually get are the result of Rhonin's apparently irresistible charms to elven women -- but the execution of the character has been just awful so far. A character that can use every kind of magic. who happens to be the son of two Warcraft II heroes! How wonderful. That certainly makes everyone else obsolete.
So, no, I wouldn't mourn the loss of Med'an in the way he's been presented so far, especially if it means that someone whose character has been completely assassinated in Wrath -- our favorite Son of Durotan -- can come back to the forefront and be an actual leader... even if it's not just for the Horde anymore.
But this is a consistent issue with the WoW comic, in my opinion -- uneven characterization, exclusive storylines that aren't really that engaging to begin with but still affect the game world, and new characters that act like we've known them forever. Add to that the increasingly unattractive art in the book, like Garrosh's tiny, tiny head and "shoulders" that make up roughly half his body -- I know I already used the word Liefeldian, but I really want to use it again -- and it equals out to sizable difficulty in enjoying the series at all, either in art or story. But the comic is also the only way to experience these storylines in the expanded universe.
So here's what Blizzard can do for us: Avoid confining important storylines to just the comics or novels. We encountered this with Sartharion and the Obsidian Sanctum -- players actually did have a legitimate reason for killing him, but most players have no idea what that reason is. And that's because it was contained in Night of the Dragon, a novel, and never once mentioned in-game. Not in a quest, not in gossip text, nothing. And any player who doesn't read the comics has no idea why Varian Wrynn is back as King of Stormwind or why he's so angry at the Horde. All we need is something in the game.
For Cataclysm, there's so much fantastic backstory behind Deathwing and the Cataclysm itself that it'd be a true shame to have a huge driving force behind it stuck in comic book land. Let's hope that Blizzard feels the same way.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. BRAINSTORM.
Maybe Garrosh kills Med'an and that's the act that endears him to the WoW playerbase!?
EPIC.

Frankly, every single thing about Med'an and his part in Warcraft lore is so utterly awful and over-the-top blatantly Mary Sue that I for one DON'T want his existence acknowledged in the games. I want him to effing vanish quietly and discreetly within the pages of the comics after leaving so little impact that those of us who don't tend to read them will never have noticed he existed.
This is the problem Blizzard has with their secondary lore materials. They'll have interesting ideas, or seek to flesh out some of the more interesting parts of Warcraft's backstory, but the writers they hire to accomplish that are HORRIBLE, mostly for the fact that their idea of character development is piling on the Mary Sue stereotypes by the truckload. Blizzard could turn out some truly amazing books and comics if they'd only get away from trawling Fanfiction.net for their "talent" pool and started hiring REAL writers.

The Star Wars franchise had the same problems. Secondary material brought some good, but mostly bad writers who just went amok inserting their own OCs to reshape the overall story. The fact that this is presented as the "future of WoW" makes it exponentially worse.

It's so NOT "Liefeldian" NOBODY copies THAT guy any more.
it's clearly tired, old "Madureiran"

"And any player who doesn't read the comics has no idea why Varian Wrynn is back as King of Stormwind or why he's so angry at the Horde. All we need is something in the game."
Actually, if you leveled another alliance character through Dustwallow Marsh, they updated the quest where you find out what's with the shipwreck. Rather than going back to warn Bolvar, you're told by Jaina, more or less "Thanks for the work there. We already knew exactly what happened which I will lay out to you now. But now we know the defias were behind it! Thanks."

Doesn't explain the mad at the Horde part, though. I've done it a few times in the last month.

That, and anyone who was already past DWM when the change was likely won't know that quest has even been changed.

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about this very thing(sort of). I picked up the first trade a few weeks ago and while making my way through stilted dialogue and muddy storytelling I had an idea.
How cool could it be if once a month we get an in game scene that occurs in the comic. Something short and in the same location that things take place in the comic. Varian and Broll escaping Thunderbluff, Gladiator fight in Dire Maul, etc. Short scenes that could be seen in game and just MAYBE intrigue a player or two into wanting to check out what happens NEXT in the comic itself. Nothing huge...but perhaps a fun destination stop we players could go and witness and be a part of once a month as lore progresses.
just a thought...;)
Dreadskull Nov 9th 2009 9:05PM
That'd be nice if they killed off this Mary Sue before he's added in-game...
Though they'll probably spin it so he somehow comes back possibly.

"I know what you're thinking, but the end of the world was merely a setback."

"Ogre-turned-Liefeldian-monstrosity"
But this is redundant, of course.
Grock Nov 9th 2009 9:41PM
It's disjointed, but that part is explained in the Battle for Undercity when Varian talks about having to fight in the arenas.
Grock Nov 9th 2009 9:42PM
Damn, this is supposed to be a response to A Nonny Mouse.

I haven't quite caught up with the comics yet to read about medan, but why does everyone want him dead?
You gotta feel sorry for the little fella, his parents are either dead or missing, he's got some fat-ass retarded ogre coming after him to try and kill him AND he's got that whole "old god whisper" dealy thing going on.
What exactly about his character makes him nancy drew'ish?
Irem Nov 9th 2009 11:17PM
The character himself is actually a nice enough kid and pretty inoffensive, if somewhat lacking in definitive personality traits. It's what he represents that rubs people the wrong way, and that's the shoehorning-in of a character that comes out of nowhere to make the existing lore characters not have to actually work to solve anything. Every established lore character that had a major role in the comic up until now has decided to hold the Idiot Ball and passively sit on their hands so that a magical superkid can go attempt to save the day.
I like to think it's because they -need- all those major lore characters for Cataclysm and can't afford to kill any of them off, and not because the writers think people find characters more interesting as they gain more random powers, but we'll see.
Arwald Nov 9th 2009 11:29PM
He's a god-character. People don't like god-characters, it's why Superman has a weakness. If he didn't, the stories would always have the same outcomes, Superman winning and never losing anything, which is rather boring. It's the same reason people hate Rhonin, he never loses and constantly wins.
Good guys need to lose sometime.
slyman.is.god Nov 9th 2009 9:55PM
it would be very very cool if we had that back of lore they have in warhammer which was mentioned yesterday I think.. I would spend hours reading it, getting to know more about each character, boss, etc.. I wish blizz implemented that.. it would make lorefreaks so happy and we wouldn't have to go to wowwiki to learn about the whole story that is this game's backbone.
darkra Nov 9th 2009 10:10PM
Totally agree with the part about Thrall's character been butchered this expansion... dunno if it was because they wanted him to be a polar opposite to the young, aggresive and thoughtless Hellscream, but all the quest text he got this expansion (which was too little) portraied him as old, tired, wary of his charge.
Case in point: A Death Knight appears before him, a being that only days ago was under the Lich King's command slaughtering puppies, kittens, gnomes and other adorable creatures. Thrall's response:
---
Eitrigg is alive because of this paladin. He would have been executed had Lord Fordring not broken him out of Stratholme.
Tirion Fordring, to have sacrificed everything to save the life of an orc... I have ever only known one other human to make such a sacrifice.
You will be in my heart always, Taretha.
Yes. For Tirion Fordring and for Eitrigg! We will accept you as a member of the Horde and your order as allies.
Blood and honor! For the Horde!
---
I mean come on!

Well I myself have enjoyed the comics since #1. I just read the latest issue Friday and being a lore buff since wayback in Warcraft 1 find the story very well done in my honest opinion. I also enjoy the art style of the books too, being a artist and graphic designer I have enjoyed the art style since the beginning.
Now about the story. If you read you notice that it is not C'Thun that is speaking to Cho'gall it is the being that wants to open the portals to the elemental plain which would be Deathwing. It is this opening that causes the Cataclysm on Azeroth and in the prophecy it states that Med'an is the catalyst that cause the portal to open. So I do believe that he will die in the process but I enjoy his character and his epic yet tragic history so I would like to see him in game at some point too.
I cant wait to see what happens when they branch the book off by factions at the beginning of the year.

Wow...awesome post. One of the best I've read. I totally agree that these major plots should exist in-game, in some way or another, instead of being confined solely to books and mangas...it would really enrich the experience.
And, yea, I have no clue why we killed Sarth, other than BLACK DRAGONS = BAD. I guess I gotta go read Night of the Dragon.
