The Queue: Blood and glory

I was going to kick off today's edition of The Queue by embedding Black Eyed Peas' I Gotta Feeling (slightly NSFW) since I mentioned it was a guilty pleasure of mine on yesterday's Moviewatch. Unfortunately, the official Black Eyed Peas Youtube channel disabled embedding and I'm not going to be a jerk and hijack it from somebody else's channel. So you get a Dragon Age screenshot instead. Hooray! Blood!
No, we're not getting paid to plug this game constantly. We're just nerds. Nerd gamers. This is what we do.
Ilmyrn asked...
"Any word on whether we'll ever see a non-Arena frost wyrm mount?"
Well, there's a frost wyrm model in patch 3.3, but I assume that's to go with the latest arena season. So I'm going to say... no. The Gladiators get Frost Wyrms, the PvE players get Invincible.
Cyanea asked...
"Where does that picture come from?"
The picture used on yesterday's edition of The Queue is a time warp image from Zach Yonzon. On the left is his wife, and on the right is his daughter wearing RL heirloom items. Very trippy.
Bob Dewane asked...
"Illidan was the box cover bad guy for BC. Arthas is the box cover bad guy for LK. Illidan was NOT the final boss for BC, Kil'Jaeden was. Is there any chance that Arthas is NOT the final boss for LK and that another enemy awaits? I only started playing after BC had been out for a while so I have no idea if it was known that Illidan was not the end of the BC story."
The plan was always that Illidan would be the final boss of The Burning Crusade, but they ran into a situation where they put Burning Crusade's raid content out too quickly for how far off Wrath of the Lich King was. To keep people interested and buy some time, they put together patch 2.4, which included the Sunwell Plateau to keep people busy.
They've said they didn't want to repeat that mistake again, so Arthas will hopefully be the absolute last raid encounter of Wrath. Of course, things can happen that cause plans to change, so if they need to delay Cataclysm for some reason, we might get another raid zone to keep us busy.
nieboh asked...
"I know these questions are supposed to be game related, but I don't know where else to ask. Is there any chance we'll be seeing a revamped comment section to this site soon? I would absolutely love an edit feature and the ability to delete your own posts would be marvelous.
Also, what's with all the "gold spammer" posts infesting this site lately? I dutifully click on the "report" button every time I see them but I don't know if that works."
For your first question, probably not anytime soon. In the future, maybe. Right now? Unlikely. Like I've said before, we have limited resources. When it comes to fixing things up and improving things and implementing new features, we have to work under something of a triage system. We would love a fixed up comment system, but there are a lot of other things that we (and the rest of the network) need and use. You won't see everything going on that pushes the comment system to the side, but trust me when I say they make both your experience and ours much better.
As for the comment spammers, such is the price we pay for being a pretty large site with an open comment system. We deal with them as quickly as we see them, and yes, reporting the posts does help. We ban who we can, we block what we can, but determined individuals will keep knocking their heads at it. If you see a spam post that's been sitting around for a particularly long time, let us know via our tipline and we'll deal with it ASAP.
Jack Spicer asked...
"Here's another quick question. The glyphs that a scribe learns from the books that were introduced in patch 3.1 (?), are those totally unique to those books, or can they be learned from ordinary Northrend Inscription Research?"
I believe that is the case, yes. You can only learn them through those books. I somewhat expect that will change when Cataclysm hits, though. Nobody will want to farm books in Northrend for glyphs when we're all in the new content.

Blizzatd said there would be 4

Actually, read MMO-Champion (which is down as of this comment). Apparently us PvE's _may_ be able to get a frost wyrm instead of a protodrake for doing the raid achievements.
DragonFireKai Nov 10th 2009 4:40PM
Yeah, I'd be willing to bet that Invincible is only going to be available for the guilds that down Arthas 25 Heroic, akin to Mimiron's Head for the AitD guilds.

Why can't players enter raid zones solo? I think its pretty annoying to have to find someone to group/raid with just to go in ZG for mount farming. It's not a huge deal, but I can't think of any good reason Blizz would have made this requirement for raid zones.
ash Nov 10th 2009 3:35PM
Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think spawning an instance takes up resources from the server and if anyone could spawn a raid instance then you run the risk of locking out raids that really want to do the content. I am not sure if this is still the case with all the revamps to the server architecture they have done over the past few years to make sure people have enough instances to spawn. I also am not sure how hard it is to set group requirements for different raid zones once the content has become "obsolete" as a challenge.
tonedeff Nov 10th 2009 4:48PM
I find the best way to get around this is to invte somoene like a guildy that is pvping and make a raid, they keep doing there stuff and you can run the raid solo.
Taladan Nov 10th 2009 5:17PM
From the Glossary:
"Raid - A raid is a large-scale attack on an area by a group of players."
MIkeHaas Nov 10th 2009 3:16PM
The WotLK Box indicated that there were to be player vs. player "dog fights" ariel combat in game.... what happened to that idea? Was is scraped or just never made it through development? Also, are there any future plans to add player on player ariel vehicle combat? (Not like the gun ship battle of ice crown, more of a plane or plane style of combat) In cataclysm possibly?
ciskos11 Nov 10th 2009 3:33PM
It was planned for Wintergrasp - and probably other BGs - but it got scrapped. Bliz just couldn't create a good feeling of plane flight, so they abandoned it. The x-y-z motion of normal flying mounts isn't really anything like what a plane feels like.
The tournament mounts are a small example of what you'd have to do: give the mounts momentum and a finite turning speed. Then you'd have to add in gravity effects. It's certainly doable, but my guess is they'll work on other things first. We won't see it before Cata, and I'd guess not even then.
Dart Matsuraki Nov 10th 2009 3:38PM
Wintergrasp, in its first inception, had airplane bombers that you were able to build and pilot to bomb the keep's walls. But Blizzard felt that the airplanes took too much away from the heat of the battle itself. Also, there were numerous bugs, including lots of lag, that got in the way of the Bombers making it into the final version of wintergrasp.
Maybe with the introduction of flying mounts in Cataclysm, it's possible that they may rework the system to allow for less lag in Tol'Barad. We can only hope.

Erm, not introduction of flying mounts DX Introduction of flying in Azeroth. This is why we need an edit button D:

The closest I can find is "Command mighty siege engines to bombard your enemies and lay waste to destructible buildings in your way." which, basically, is what you do in Wintergrasp.
Amaxe Nov 10th 2009 5:58PM
when you are doing the bombing mission in icecrown, you can shoot at planes of the other faction doing that mission and even shoot them down. You briefly get a buff which identifies you if you shoot down 5 planes.

If more spambots had clever catchphrases like "Billy Mays here!" or, "You're gonna love my nuts!" we could probably learn to co-exist in peace.

(mayhap a bit off topic) How did Wowinsider.com start? Who were the original bloggers?
Gamer am I Nov 10th 2009 3:20PM
You can actually derive some sort of pleasure (be it guilty of not) from "I Gotta Feeling"? I'm impressed.

"For your first question, probably not anytime soon. In the future, maybe. Right now? Unlikely."
I believe the answer you were looking for was "Soon."
Sneakyfellow Nov 10th 2009 3:22PM
Is there any chance that there will ever be 1v1 skirmishes for arena?
Fornozo Nov 10th 2009 3:29PM
No, PvP is not balanced around 1v1 and will never be. Also no one wants hour long games where two 1k resi resto druids fight.
(cutaia) Nov 10th 2009 3:30PM
1v1? They're called "duels."
