The guys over at The Instance podcast got a chance to talk to Blizzard's Tom Chilton about
the recent decision to sell in-game noncombat pets for real money, and the interview is now up in the latest episode on their site. He talks first about the pets' development, and it sounds like they designed the pets thinking they'd be sold on a real-money store eventually. He says the price point was "arrived at by trying to figure out what it would have to be to make sense for us to spend time working on it." And he mentions
the TCG and their loot prizes -- he says those were meant to be a bonus, and they ended up being a roundabout way for players to buy pets anyway, so Blizzard decided to go with this more direct plan.
He doesn't say much about the future, but he does say that Blizzard is planning on doing some "pet and plushie" deals, where you'll be able to buy a plushie from the
Blizzard store, and get an in-game pet with it. For the game specifically, he mentions the guild transfer service that's coming (
we heard about that back at BlizzCon -- you'll be able to server transfer an entire guild rather than do it account-by-account), but otherwise he tells players that the pet store is just a "side project" -- right now, it's not taking away from development at all, and if it does grow, Chilton says Blizzard would hire more people rather than using current developers. We'll have to see what happens in the future.

Better this than paying some scammer on ebay for a pet.

Oh yeah, go Scott and Randy! Nice scoop with that interview, and hail to AIE!

Exactly, they need to stick all of the TCG loot on that store so that people aren't getting scammed out of their money over Ebay or their gold in WoW etc.
Making those items TCG exclusive will just lead to people losing money, gold or even their accounts to scammers. If Blizzard were to put those items on the online store they would become, once again as Tom said, "a bonus" for playing the TCG, not another way to scam players.

Funny, that's exactly what I bought from the store the other day. ;) I've needed an excuse to get that plushie anyway. :)

Guild Transfer? ... wow
Dboy Nov 10th 2009 9:23PM
This is going to be even more important with the upcoming guild changes (levelling, experience, talents, etc).
Imagine what a royal pain it would be if, when you transferred your guild across account by account, you had to lose all of the guild rewards you worked so hard to achieve.

I don't like the pet store, but I think buying a plushie for a pet is a good idea.
snowleopard233 Nov 10th 2009 8:13PM
It does sound pretty cool that you'll be able to take your kid's plush murloc into wow with you to help you kill stuff lol.
All while they're sound asleep with the little bugger clutched in their arms...

If they are going to continue with this pet store, whether it be by adding more or having that bundle deal, I do believe that the pet based achievements (there may only be one) need to be adjusted.
Dreyja Nov 10th 2009 8:34PM
Should the do that for all of the collector's edition pets out there? It's all you're really paying extra for.
Reuben Nov 10th 2009 8:47PM
I thought about that, and no, I don't think so. The CE pets are not that prevalent, and wouldn't make as big a difference as having multiple pets for sale would.
RogueJedi86 Nov 10th 2009 9:29PM
You mean they should make sure to flag all Pet Store pets as not counting towards pet achievements? Makes sense to me. The raider-folk say there's no in-game advantage, but the achievements counting is an advantage. Unflag these pets for achievements and there's truly no in-game advantage at all.

An in-game advantage would be an extra ability, boots to stats, being able to move/fly faster, or even an in-game convenience -- such as http://www.wowwiki.com/Argent_Pony_Bridle
Having more Achievement Points or getting the Pet Achievements faster than others doesn't constitute an in-game advantage. If it's possible to get the Achievement without buying pets, I really don't see the issue.
Dreyja Nov 10th 2009 11:12PM
@ Drakken - It is a lot like how different people see the game card loot. I'd buy a spectral tiger card, or buy a pack hoping for a spectral tiger but I could care less about the game.
Alas, I know a LOT of people who bought the collector's edition for the pet.
Point taken though. I still don't see them as separate things. Money was transferred for at least one in game item. As long as it doesn't make me more powerful - no harm no foul. I'd be right there with you all getting angry if it were a 310 mount or armor.
:)

Woot! Scott and Randy finally get some solid recognition on wow.com for thier phenominal podcast! AIE or death!
matt Nov 10th 2009 9:20PM
what are you talking about both instance and many of Scott's comics have been meantioned many times before on this Blog. Just because you didn't see them doesn't mean it hasn't happened. In any case The Instance is the largest WoW podcast with something like 50K a week downloads it doesn't really need any help. Not that people can't work together but I would rather see wow.com tell me about new blogs and podcasts i don't know about than the ones have been around for 3+ years.
Nice interview hope The instance get more blizzard big wigs.

We mention The Instance pretty often. Scott and Randy do a great job, always glad to get them a link. How many times have you heard them mention us? :)
