Phat Loot Phriday: Parrot Cage (Hyacinth Macaw)

Name: Parrot Cage (Hyacinth Macaw) (Wowhead, Thottbot, WarcraftPets)
Type: Epic (yes, Epic) Noncombat Pet
Damage/Speed: N/A
Attributes:
- Allows you to summon the Hyacinth Macaw companion pet, one of the most beautiful "parrot style" pets in the game.
- And yes, it has a purple name. Originally, it was listed as a lower quality (Green, I think, for Uncommon, like most pets of this type). But this pet is special -- it has a super low drop rate, anywhere from 1/1400 if you're lucky, up to 1/5000 kills of the mobs below. And so Blizzard just recently made it one of two epic pets in the game, the other being the Hippogryph Hatchling from the TCG.
- Other than that, it doesn't do much but flap in the air and look pretty. But it is very, very rare.
So now, unless you want to pay a ton of money on the AH, the way to get it for yourself is to grind. Grind, grind, and grind. You've got to grind on the Bloodsails down in Booty Bay -- each one of them has a very small chance to drop one. The good news is that while you're grinding, you'll gain other rewards -- each of the guys drops cash, and you'll get a metric ton of Silk, Mageweave, and a few other rare-ish and quest items (which you can sell to the AH or turn in for reputation). But those rewards can be earned in other ways, so if you want to go after this pet, the main conclusion is that you'll be grinding pirates for a long, long time. Good luck!
Getting Rid of It: You click the pet, you learn the spell, and that's about it. Although the pet is still BoE, so you could give it to a good friend if you want. And if you are really, really nuts, a vendor will give 10s for it.

I got this last week! My friend and I were talking about pets, and he mentioned that there was an epic level one. I looked it up, thought it was pretty. I got really bored and thought I'll never get it, but it'll be a good waste of time to go kill pirates. I can get a bit of rep, at least. I start killing, and I aoe down some pirates and run down a set of stairs, and there was a pirate I didn't remember killing (but must have hit him with the aoe). I loot him and viola. 20 minutes. I fully admit that I was really lucky lol.

It's so funny how that happens.

That's what happened to my uncle. Heard about it -> started AoEing the area -> got it in 20 mintues. Sold it for 4.5k and a darkmoon card: greatness. Not a bad money boost for a fresh 80.

It's going for about 20k on my server. It's a very imbalanced server with an historically low population, which generally gives sellers a big advantage.

Funny you should do this one now. Some guy put one up for 50g bid with no buyout last week. 48 hours later he cashed in 17k gold for the sale.

Got it two years ago for 18 silver. Yes, silver. It was white quality back then and the guy selling it thought it was just another parrot likr you get from Deadmines.
Feel free to hate me, everyone else does.

i used to buy these things off the ah when they were priced less than 20g and repost them for 100g. they didn't even always sell then. now blizzard makes their name purple and i see people trying to sell them for 1k. they should have left the name white imo.

Yep, way back about 3 years ago or so I got it on my warrior. Didnt realize it was that rare and "learned it" back before they had the pets turned into spells. After that conversion, the cage was in his inventory still with a BoE tag on it as if I had never used it. Tried to sell the thing but no luck. It's now on a character I never use and am about to delete. FML. :(

A year and a half ago I found one of these on the ah for about 8g. It was still white-level. I bought it and contemplated keeping it, but ended up flipping it for 600g. A few weeks later I picked another one up for 20g and kept it.
This guy means so much to me because I got it on my first guy when he was about level 30. This pet payed for my level 40 and 60 epic mounts. Without him I probably would have been running around on foot in my 50's.

Tatsu, the Hyacinth Macaw has been selling for thousands to even tens of thousands of gold when it was still of lesser quality. The only reason they were put on the AH for those prices were because people didn't know the rarity of the pet.
I sold mine last October for 21,000 gold.
Just because the quality changed didn't change its value it is just helping players without a clue cash in a bit easier [through recognition of the item quality] than they used to... rather than sell a pet that can go for 5-30k gold for 13s or something.

It was originally common quality (white). I lucked out back in classic and found someone buying it for ~20g. Of course, I never play the character it's bound to anymore, and I wasn't smart enough to shift it when they unbound everyone's pets with 3.0, so it's farm time.
Strahl Nov 14th 2009 12:41AM
They didnt unbind them. Even though your items would say "Bind on Equip", it was still flagged as being used. I tried it and it wouldnt let me post th em on the auction house saying it had been used already.

Actually yes, your pets became BoE again when they changed the pet system. I know this for a fact, because I found some pets (whelpling pets) on some old alts. I grabbed them for my pet collecting character :)

I managed to get this when I was level 35 on my hunter. "oooo pretty" I thought as I used it. Now, 2 years later, I have switched my mains to a mage and am a big pet collector. The macaw is sitting with my level 44 alt.
Petitioned a GM but they wouldn't change it over to my main. :(.

I've wanted this pet since I first found out about it a year ago. I spent 10 hours farming one day and still did not see it drop. In total I've spent around 40 hours killing those stupid pirates.
KarnnExodar Nov 22nd 2009 1:10PM
Holy crapola I found one on my alt and I gave it away to somebody as a gift when it was still white.
The amount of gold you can get from the AH trying to sell this would be worth the wait while aoe farming pirates.
Diabloshammy Nov 13th 2009 7:52PM
Back when they changed pets to spells, I sent in a petition on each character saying I had lost the macaw, and a few days later, had 2-3 of them learned as spells.

I'd also like to point out for non bird lovers that the Hyacinth Macaw is the biggest of the parrots, as well as one of the most expensive. My mother and I were quoted once with the price of 20k (20,000 USD). So the epic quality is quite fitting :-P
