Icecrown raid access progression

- Icecrown Citadel is going to be broken up into four distinct sections: The Lower Spire, Plagueworks, Crimson Hall, and Frostwing Halls. We plan on releasing these four sections of Icecrown Citadel over time and not all immediately when patch 3.3.0 goes live.
- The first section that opens will include the Lord Marrowgar, Lady Deathwhisper, Icecrown Gunship Battle, and Deathbringer Saurfang encounters. "Several weeks" until the next encounters become available.
- Players may not attempt any Heroic versions of 10 player encounters until they have defeated the Lich King in a 10 player raid. The same goes for 25 mans. This means no heroic Icecrown until after the Lich King is defeated, which will apparently be, at the earliest, in a couple of months.
- The four most difficult bosses have a limited number of attempts on them each week. Once those attempts are gone, you have to wait another week to try again.
- There will be no explicit rewards for defeating the Lich King with a specific number of attempts remaining as there was with Trial of the Grand Crusader. There will also not be an achievement to complete Icecrown Citadel without being defeated by a boss encounter, or letting a raid member die. (i.e. A Tribute to Insanity).
- In the weeks and months after all twelve encounters are unlocked, additional attempts against the final four boss encounters become available.
- Over time, after all bosses are defeated, players will begin to get a buff, making defeating bosses easier.
The full statement after the break.
The full statement from Daelo:
Icecrown Citadel testing has been progressing very well over the last few weeks, and this has been a huge help to the encounter design team. I want to thank everyone who has logged onto the PTR and tried the encounters there.
As we're now getting closer to the release of 3.3.0, I wanted to talk about our plans for access progression within Icecrown Citadel. Icecrown Citadel is going to be broken up into four distinct sections: The Lower Spire, Plagueworks, Crimson Hall, and Frostwing Halls. We plan on releasing these four sections of Icecrown Citadel over time and not all immediately when patch 3.3.0 goes live. At this point I can't give precise dates for these release dates as they are determined by when patch 3.3.0 goes live. Once dates are known with more certainty, I'll update the community so they can plan appropriately.
The first section that opens will include the Lord Marrowgar, Lady Deathwhisper, Icecrown Gunship Battle, and Deathbringer Saurfang encounters. Progress beyond that point will be prevented for several weeks. Then the Plagueworks will open with Rotface, Festergut, and Professor Putricide becoming available. After another period of time, the Crimson Hall will open and you can then fight the Blood Princes and Blood-Queen Lana'thel. The final Frostwing Halls unlock then occurs after that, making Valithria Dreamwalker, Sindragosa, and the Lich King available. We believe a staggered release of the content will allow players to experience Icecrown Citadel at a sustainable, measured, and ultimately more enjoyable pace.
There are other elements that gate access along the way. Players may not attempt any Heroic versions of 10 player encounters until they have defeated the Lich King in a 10 player raid. Similarly, players must defeat the Lich King in a 25 player raid before they can attempt a Heroic 25 player encounter. So players must master every normal difficulty encounter in Icecrown Citadel before attempting Heroic difficulty.
The Lich King may not be attempted until Professor Putricide, Blood-Queen Lana'thel, and Sindragosa are defeated. Furthermore, the Heroic difficulty of The Lich King encounter may not be attempted in any week unless the three aforementioned encounters have been defeated in Heroic difficulty that week.
The Ashen Verdict provides reinforcements and material for players to assault Icecrown Citadel, but this support is not endless. Raids will have a limited number of attempts total each week to defeat the four most difficult encounters in Icecrown Citadel: Professor Putricide, Blood-Queen Lana'thel, Sindragosa, and the Lich King. As these boss encounters are unlocked, the number of attempts available per week will increase. The initial number of attempts provided for defeating Professor Putricide is only five. When Blood-Queen Lana'thel unlocks, the amount of total attempts remaining will increase to 10. Then when Sindragosa and the Lich King unlock, 15 total attempts will be available to defeat all four bosses. After a raid has exhausted their attempts for the week, the Ashen Verdict must withdraw their support and the four most difficult bosses all despawn and become unavailable for the week. The limited attempt system is a feature of both Normal and Heroic difficulty.
There will be no explicit rewards for defeating the Lich King with a specific number of attempts remaining as there was with Trial of the Grand Crusader. There will also not be an achievement to complete Icecrown Citadel without being defeated by a boss encounter, or letting a raid member die. (i.e. A Tribute to Insanity).
In the weeks and months after all twelve encounters are unlocked, additional attempts against the final four boss encounters become available. This represents the Ashen Verdict growing more powerful and gaining a stronger foothold in Icecrown Citadel. To further help raids, Varian Wrynn and Garrosh Hellscream will begin to provide assistance by inspiring the armies attacking Icecrown Citadel. This is represented as an additional zone wide spell effect applied to all players that will increase their hit points, damage dealt, and healing done. This effect will also increase in effectiveness over time. Players may opt out of the spell's effect if they so wish.

Not that many attempts to start but at least it'll increase over time. Going to be the Sunwell of WOTLK.
Tridus Nov 18th 2009 1:33PM
You mean it will require 5 Shaman to complete?
Seems unlikely. :)
Joshua Nov 18th 2009 2:31PM
Lol not QUITE what I mean, but heh.
Doberbane Nov 18th 2009 12:36PM
Wow, sounds like Blizz expects us to be fighting the Lich King in his citadel for a long time.
Bring it on

Or...
GC: So, how do we get them to eat this 10 ton elephant out in Icecrown?
Kalgan: One piece at a time?
GC: Yeah...that works!
:)

Sounds like they are doing this right!
/ waits for 3.3, make it happen next week!
tom99k Nov 18th 2009 12:37PM
Hmm... I don't know what I think of it.
Andy1005 Nov 18th 2009 12:37PM
So they are making the lich king's palace a tiered event like Sunwell Plateau?
Why don't they just dematerialize the first four bosses into gold and loot for the raiders to spare them the hassle of being inconvenienced by 'weak' bosses?
Why can't they make every boss in Icecrown Citadel as strong as each other instead of giving us an instance where only the last four bosses matter to progress? Please rework your raid system Blizzard. Thank you.
Babaloo Nov 18th 2009 4:09PM
Why don't they just dematerialize all old content into loot and gold? The theory doesn't hold up well, eh?
Newchron Nov 18th 2009 5:22PM
They're not just trying to make difficult bosses. They're trying to give as much people as possible the chance to see all content. But you know that already!
Alex Nov 18th 2009 6:33PM
I agree with Andy, gief downrate pls. Basically, I kill Arthas, so after I can kill his minions while standing on my head. Makes perfect sense.

I like that not everything is available right away on patch day and guilds have a limited number of attempts. Makes you want to work harder.
It would be nice to see a lesser known guild snag a world first on heroic but sadly that won't happen as the top guilds will clear through it. Either way I like this setup and I can't wait to see how everything fits together from a lore perspective.
Hisrech Nov 18th 2009 12:39PM
I like these ideas, they are great marketing to get more players into the content. By releasing over time, it will really give players the chance to "gear up" before having to encounter the harder bosses deeper with in ICC
A Slave Obeys Nov 18th 2009 12:39PM
This is infuriating and downright shameful on Blizzard's behalf. They're trying to drag out this raid over a longer period because they got lazy with 3.2. They released an incredibly undersized raid (with bosses who have enormous loot tables) WAY TOO early (killing off Ulduar that soon was a mistake. Even the best guilds only had it completed for 3 weeks or so).
I don't want to hear some justification about us needing this extra time to progressively gear ourselves for the harder fights at the end of the raid; that's fucking bullshit. Between the Emblems of Frost gear and the carry-over gear from ToC, many active raiders should have no gear concerns. Even on the PTR, where most players are in 245-level gear, the bosses tested aren't providing any extreme challenge limited by the players' gear.
They're trying to drag WotLK out because they got lazy with this expansion pack. This is the final nail in the coffin encasing all of Blizzard's mistakes from WotLK.
If they're going to put limited attempts, why aren't there any rewards associated with them? This is another device they're employing in order to drag out the content for the casuals.
This is a slap on an already severely-bruised face.

Yes, its simply to just insult us. Stop revolving your life around this game, and stop assuming how you think Blizzard works things. You don't know how this works, you're not running the game, stop bitching. Bitch.
olzer Nov 18th 2009 12:50PM
Stop thinking you know how Blizzard runs the game, and their reasons behind every feature, because you don't. You might think you do, but you don't.
A Slave Obeys Nov 18th 2009 12:52PM
Don't give in. Don't thumbs-down my comment just because you don't want to hear the truth: they're trying to cover their asses and kill time until Cataclysm.
Unless this patch is pants-shittingly difficult (and given the current progress seen on the PTR, this doesn't seem likely), they're just idling.
Let's be conservative and say "several weeks" means 3 (personally, I'm leaning towards 5). It's going to be 3 WHOLE MONTHS between when 3.3 comes out and when you can kill Arthas. This is all fine for the 3-6 hour-per-week casual guilds, but consider the guilds in the top 1000, who cleared Anub'Arak on the first night he was around and have (mostly) finished ToGC. I'm sure they won't need 3 weeks to learn Lord Marrowgar. The only boss of even moderate difficulty in the first section is Saurfang.
Assuming a 3-week buffer, these guilds also have to wait AT LEAST 12 weeks to access the Hard Mode/Heroic Mode content...which Blizzard says they designed specifically for these types of players...so, what the fuck?
bizounce Nov 18th 2009 12:58PM
So in other words, if I can't make this game my only real achievement in life, possibly to the equivelant of finding the cure for cancer, or climbing mt everest naked, its simply "idling." So, what game company do you work for? Or do your game politics just make you able to feel like your somehow changing the world (of warcraft) for the better. Get a new hobby, or possibly a real responsibility that doesn't allow you to play WoW for 16 hours a day.
Ragen Nov 18th 2009 12:58PM
Why is this infuriating? This is what is called gated progression, which is blizzard's new way of handling people like Ensidia blowing through their hardwork right off the bat.
Chill and relax. Your not gonna get you wish of raids becoming only for the top 5 percent; but at least enjoy the ride and not worry about the other 95 percent of us who are having fun.
And by they way, your face isn't bruised, it's your ego. The cure for that is a good slap of humility. It works, try it.
On topic, this is a nice way to fit ICC into raiding scheduals. Between Chain ran ToC 10 and uld, we should be able to work this in.
Endario Nov 18th 2009 1:01PM
Sorry, can't hear you over the downrank button.
