Insider Trader: Icecrown gold rush
With the battle against the Lich King looming closer and closer on the horizon, the crafty craftperson is already getting ready to pepper the local auction house with crafted items. Guilds will need to slap on crafted items to quickly round out behind-the-gear-curve raid members, and the auction house will be the first place they turn to do that. The gear you build and prepare now will be quickly sold when it's time to fight Arthas.
More importantly, though, raiders are going to see a whole new tier of gear. That means the items they use to buff their gear is going to need replacing, and the prescient craftperson is going to be ready to meet that need.
This conjecture, of course, leads us to question what items we should be preparing for Icecrown Citadel. What items will be of any use to a raider? What will they be willing to cough up good cash to purchase? Which items will be meaningful, and not simply fodder for immediate replacement?
Take a look behind the cut to see what we think will be good stuff to sell when the new raid is released.
Alchemy
Alchemists continue to exploit the market on two particular items -- potions and flasks. None of the stuff that you're selling now is going to spontaneously become useless. It's not like tanks are suddenly going to spurn the quick health boost of a Runic Healing Potion.
So, what are the items to be ready to put up on the Auction House? The Flask of Endless Rage will still be a go-to item for physical damage raiders, while the Flask of the Frost Wyrm is the spell-caster's counterpart.
Just as important, though, is that you should expect Jewelcrafters to be eager for epic gems. They're going to keep filling and refilling gem sockets for raiders. And while they can score a raw gem for ten thousand honor a pop, it's going to be difficult for them to keep up with the demand that way. Your gem transmutes will be useful and profitable quickly.
Blacksmithing
The bad news here is that if you haven't already been raiding Trial of the Champion, you're not going to see your old blacksmithing gear sell very well. The readily available Emblem gear is going to supercede most of your old Saronite and Titanium standbys. However, if you've managed to pick up any plans like the Saronite Swordbreakers or the Sunforged Breastplate, you might be able to get a couple of them out to needful buyers.
In the very least, your belt buckles are still going to be valuable to anyone who picks up a new belt.
Enchanting
Enchanters should be starting their engines and getting ready to fire up their very best Trade Channel speeches. Your standby enchants -- spell power, strengh, crit -- will be the exact same stuff you've always sold. However, all of your raiding customers are about to see a whole new set of gear. Guild enchanters will be stressed to keep up with the demand. Getting a few vellum-based enchants up on the Auction House will satisfy the impulsive, instant gratification crowd.
Jewelcrafting
The same advice I'm giving the enchanters applies to you -- everyone's about to start rolling over into a whole new set of gear. However, you need to do a little more preparation, given the more difficult ramp in obtaining your raw materials. I've always found the honor-purchase route to be the easiest, but I'm a little bit of a battleground fan.
In terms of proportion, aim a little harder at the attack power, spell power, and strength gems than the other options. I suspect our old friend the Bold Cardinal Ruby will be in very high demand in Icecrown, and the Runed Cardinal Ruby will be a very close second. These simple stats remain among the "sexiest," and relatively easy for anyone to understand. That means they'll be the favorite gems of your standard purchasing crowd.
Leatherworking
Everyone's getting pants! New pants! It's a big old icy pants party!
Armor kits are going to be a hot item on the Auction House. This only make sense when you consider the vast advantage conveyed by items like Icescale Leg Armor.
Unfortunately, much like when discussing the Trial of the Champion gear for Blacksmiths, I'm not seeing items like Bracers of Swift Death becoming a hugely productive product for you. Crusader Orbs are just so expensive that you'll run out all your profit getting a hold of materials.
Tailoring
You're in the same boat as leatherworkers. Your patterns from raiding (so far) are nice and all, but the Crusader Orbs that fuel current tier crafting are just too expensive to make it worthwhile. But you have the option of making stuff for pants..Sapphire Spellthread that hits the Auction House will quickly be purchased.
Engineering and Inscription
Sorry, guys. You already knew that this would probably be the case, but I'm not sure any engineering or inscription items are spontaneously going to become more popular because of the new raids.
Gathering Materials
You'll see a huge uptick in buyer interest in raw materials right before the raid hits, and then for about the next two weeks. The best advice for folks who harvest raw materials would be to carefully pace how quickly you put them on the market. If you supply hundreds of raw materials all at once, you're going to devalue your own product.
It might not hurt to pay attention on when the big raiding guilds on your servers plan to run the new instance. Then, that evening, load the auction house up with your product. Have it there and ready for the raiders to buy as they get out of their raid. That will be when the impulse to buy is the strongest, especially if they are running multiple nights in a row.
Good luck, good profit.

How could you miss the new bullets from Engineering! Start stacking up Crystallized Earth / Shadows like crazy now and make a boat load of money when the patch hits!
Finnicks Nov 20th 2009 3:23PM
Those epic ammunition things are going to be crafted? Z0MG.
Thanks for the tip, guy. I had no idea! *zooms off to collect Shadow and Earth*
Leejin Nov 20th 2009 3:28PM
I noticed this too..
How could such a huge, potential profit engine for engineers be missed?
Dashifen Nov 20th 2009 3:28PM
You'll need goblin engineering for the bullets and gnome engineering for arrows. If you haven't already picked sides, you'll have to do so now. I know didn't bother to do so in the past because there was no reason for me to do so. Now there is!

Yes yes yes, the engineering ammo... that requires a reputation of Honored with the Ashen Verdict.

Wait for it...
Yes, that means entering ICC and actually downing bosses in there to be able to buy the plans... No word yet if you have to have honored just to equip them.
Even then, not very many guilds even *have* engineers; most of the hardcore ones I know of all require the 'legit' professions with useful self-buffs, you know, that min/max crap. Regardless, I can't expect even getting to honored with them will be very easy, it IS Icecrown Citadel, and it IS the best ammo in the game as of yet... or whenever 3.3 comes out. So don't expect to be making sweet boatloads of cash right away. You might not even be able to make or sell any at all =/
Bob Dewane Nov 20th 2009 3:54PM
Uuummmmm.....check me if I'm wrong here, but there are two 5-man wings of ICC, right? I'd think you'd be able to farm rep out of those like CRAZY (down reg mode, reset, lather, rinse, repeat =P). If that IS the case, getting to honored will take almost no time. If that IS NOT the case, then I think I'd rather schedule another root canal instead of dealing with the headache from that rep grind.
What totally SUX, though, is having to be Gnomish or Goblin to make either the arrows or bullets, respectively. My main is a Gnome warrior and a Gnome Engineer (duh!). I have a lvl 80 hunter alt that my engineer keeps cranking bullets out for. If I have to start buying bullets off the AH because I won't go Goblin engineerin, im gonna be one p!$$#@ off little guy!
MaatJusticeTruth Nov 20th 2009 3:54PM
Quite a few hunters are already Engineers, since it provides the BIS cloak, feet and (can be made a case for) hand enchants.
Quill2006 Nov 20th 2009 5:05PM
Well, I can see hunters needing more of the regular old Mammoth Cutters and Saronite Arrowheads for a while, since a lot of people are going to be re-energized by the new patch. Also, if people pick up a new gun/bow/xbow they'll need a new scope. Still, not much to sell for us Engineers, as usual.
QQinsider Nov 21st 2009 11:56AM
Wow, I hadn't heard about the new epic ammo until now. Plugging it into the dps spreadsheet gives +150 DPS over saronite arrows/mammoth cutters on my MM hunter with full raid buffs...and they're cheaper to make!
I can see there being a good profit on these at the start if only a few people can make them, really all depends on how easy it is to get to honoured.
Deathgodryuk Nov 21st 2009 2:58PM
@Eli
Engineering is the top DPS profession for Rogue atm if they use everything available to them on cooldown.
Graylo Nov 20th 2009 3:11PM
Your obviously not thinking about the new Glyphs coming out in 3.3. Yes they will be available to anyone from a trainer but you can expect the Snowfall inks and the glyphs themselves to be quite expensive for a couple of days.
Nick S Nov 20th 2009 4:37PM
That, and new content gets people excited to raid again. That means returning players, new alts, and respecs, all of which make scribes RICH.
pietrex Nov 20th 2009 3:14PM
"The bad news here is that if you haven't already been raiding Trial of the Champion"
Surely you meant Trial of the Crusader. :)
Super Guest Man 9000 Nov 20th 2009 3:15PM
They're adding new arrows and bullets to the engineers that are epic in quality, and should surpass the current ones by a good margin.
Ringo Flinthammer Nov 20th 2009 5:28PM
The new ammo is about 50 percent better.
The only downside is that it's inexplicably linked to an engineering spec, unlike all the other professions' new Ashen Verdict recipes. It also requires getting to Friendly with the Ashen Verdict, which should mean all the engineering hunters should plan on at least pugging a 10 man raid once or twice. (Hey, it's easier than Hyjal back in the day for TBC's top quality ammo.)
onetrueping Nov 20th 2009 3:23PM
I'd imagine that all those enchants that will be needed will need to be auctioned off on some high-end weapon and armor vellums, so those will probably be valuable, you know, right now...
jfofla Nov 20th 2009 3:33PM
You mean I finally will have a market for my stacks and stacks of earth? Nice.
I went and bought up all the Flasks of the Frost Wyrm on my servers AH. I figure today's prices will be less than after the patch.
Fierna Nov 20th 2009 3:39PM
Mmmm enchanters will be enchanting new gear but will have to hope for tips and fees as the pug feature passes free mats to everyone whether we want to DE or not.
onetrueping Nov 20th 2009 4:08PM
Or you can toss the enchants on Vellum, sell them via the AH at a reasonable markup, and thus profit from the new abundance of cheap enchanting mats.
Fierna Nov 20th 2009 4:18PM
The challenge with what you suggest is that there is usually an inelastic demand for enchants. More mats available does not mean more enchants will be needed, people already put the highest level enchant available on the higher tiers of gear. They don't tend to put +8 stats on a new chest piece they received in a 25 man raid, they go for the +10.
The next patch will initially have a high demand for enchantments but when things are steady prices will plummet as the supply will outpace demand.
Now I have o go put the finishing touches on my "The End is Nigh!" sign and walk around with a crazed expression on my face.
