Patch 3.3 PTR: New Kirin Tor Rings on their way

Surprising no one, Bornakk confirmed recently that there's a new set of Kirin Tor rings on the way for those with lots of disposable income in Patch 3.3. With an item level of 251, they're a significant upgrade to the 226 ring you upgraded back when Ulduar came out. You should expect the upgrade process to cost about as much as the last one -- that is, 1000 gold pre-faction discount.
Good to see that they're seeing this ring thing through to the end of the expansion. The initial investment is a bit steep, but hey, free Dalaran portal, and the upgrade price is pretty reasonable as you go.

Any clue how much they'll cost to buy new without the old one to upgrade? 8000? Or do I have to buy the old one and pay to upgrade it twice?

You'll most likely have to buy the old one and upgrade twice,
Lemons Nov 20th 2009 5:00PM
You mean upgrade 3 times...
slyyy Nov 20th 2009 1:12PM
This is great news.. my Kirin Tor ring has been sitting in my bags ever since I've upgraded both my rings to ilvl 245. As a shaman with incription I already have 3 ways to get back to Dalaran; the ring is useless as a free port.
Stone_Rhino Nov 20th 2009 1:38PM
Then why did you buy one?
Ookami.kun Nov 20th 2009 1:43PM
My guess would be for the achievement. Same reason people buy the Gigantique bag when it's capacity is less than a Frostweave bag. :)

It was a huge upgrade when I initially bought it.. but the rings that drop from current raiding content are far better.

@Ookami.kun "Gigantique" Bag is 22 slots and frostwaeve bags are 20 slot

I bought the ring so I could set my hearth somewhere other than dal. Making that change will save you a lot of time and make everything that much moe convenient.

I think he meant the 22 slot Glacial Bags. They are heaps cheaper than the 22 slot Gigantique, but ppl still want the achieve so will pay the extra.

I keep forgetting these exist.
Then again, I'm a mage.

this.
Vogie Nov 20th 2009 1:26PM
Hopefully they'll drop the price of the originals. I'd love these for my toons, but with 3 80s to keep geared and a druid leveling thru Dragonblight, they're just still too expensive.
Magma Nov 20th 2009 1:26PM
These rings have never been a good deal. Consider now that it will cost 12,250g to have a current ring..Wow no thanks.
Rollo Nov 20th 2009 2:07PM
Consider how long you've been wearing this ring. From a fresh level 80 and all the way through the expansion! If you're raiding lots, you'll find better rings of course. But as a casual raider, I've been wearing mine pretty much since I dinged 80 one year ago. No other piece of gear has seen that much use.
Add to that the teleport ability (meaning I can set my hearthstone someplace else). And lastly, this will be the 4th ring, so 4 upgrade for 11k-12k something averages out to 3k per upgrade.
Probably the best purchase ever. :-)

Money is trivial if you're max level and doing tournament dailies. It's easy to be carrying thousands in gold by the time you hit 80, assuming you add the Kaluak, Wyrmrest and other dailies to your leveling process. For a new 80, any of these rings are good, and if you're loaded, the top level one is quite good.
An ilevel 251 ring on patch day is good for everyone who can afford it, especially if you're not raiding Icecrown and able to get gear of that quality otherwise. (And even for them, walking in with a good ring means the content will be at least a tiny bit easier.)

Why is there an achievement for buying one of these rings, but there isn't a tank version? Seems kind of against the trend of achievements being intended for everyone, doesn't it? If one type of player has to spend thousands of gold for a fairly useless item, that seems more like a feat of strength. Maybe I'm missing something?
Rollo Nov 20th 2009 2:12PM
What about the etched ring of the kirin tor? Strength, stamina, expertise and crit. Perhaps not ideal, but certainly not worthless for a tank?
(cutaia) Nov 20th 2009 3:26PM
Yeah...I would consider that pretty worthless for a tank. How does crit chance help me if I end up dying because I'm missing stats that are actually important to a tank? I understand that strength and stamina are good for tanks, but I can find those on other "non-ideal" rings that might also have something like, I don't know, defense rating on them. And those don't cost thousands upon thousands of gold.
Point being, everyone else gets to buy a ring, get an achievement AND have something to wear for awhile. Tanks get to spend thousands of gold for something they would never wear? It's nonsensical.
Maybe I'm off-base here, so any other tanks reading this...tell me: Would you consider a ring with expertise and crit worthwhile?
West Nov 20th 2009 3:42PM
expertise isn't useless, but for a tank version, i'd much rather have some avoidance or even def on it.
