This was a reader suggestion, and a good one: Zvonimir wants to know how many of us
WoW players use a Mac to play the game. Blizzard has steadfastly put out Mac and Windows versions of all their games ever since the original
Warcraft, but this is not at all the norm in the industry. There are only a few other major MMOs I can think of that even have official Mac versions (
EVE,
Warhammer,
City of Heroes, um...anything else?). Sure, we can always run some sort of virtualization (like Crossover Games, which
supports WoW on Linux) or Boot Camp, but that's just less awesome than running something in your regular OS.
Anyway, here's the question for today: what platform do you usually use to play
WoW?
What platform do you play WoW on?| Windows | 16183 (69.6%) |
|---|
| Mac | 6555 (28.2%) |
|---|
| Linux | 498 (2.1%) |
|---|

I'd personally say after playing on both platforms, Windows is allot more familiar but I still prefer to play on Mac even tho am currently playing on Windows.

I'm glad WoW runs so well on both Windows and Mac OS X because I can go to any of my friends and say, "Hey, you should really try this game... and roll a tank, we need one."

Note to other MMO Publishers: I might try your game if there is a Mac version. Until then, no dice.

I used to play on a Mac, but I switched back to Windows. The main reason being my iMac was having issues playing in Northrend that were just getting annoying, and to upgrade it was cheaper to go back to a non-Mac PC. And a urge to get back into computer gaming in a way that wasn't possible with a Mac.
That said, WoW is great on both Windows and OS X. There's really no difference between them game play wise. My wife still plays on an iMac.

Very Very Scary! My Alienware just died on me about a week ago and I bought a MacBook Pro for the first time. I'm not going back! Ironic Question!

I own a Mac, but I do all of my game playing on a PC. Each of them has their strengths.
The headline on this blog post is going to skew the results of the survey though. A lot of PC and Linux users are just going to skip over it and go on to the next post. Instead of "How Many of You Play On A Mac?" a more neutral headline would have been "What Kind of Computer Do You Play On?".

Meh. Macs are cool, but I was fed and raised on Windows. I'm just too accustomed to switch over; whenever I even use a Mac, it feels weird.

Happy Linux gamer here.
I'm a little sad that next to nobody releases native Linux clients anymore, but Blizz games are usually very well supported with Wine (including SC, D2, WC3, and WoW.) The FPS is actually better with Linux than with W7, but I don't get the nicely rendered shadows. The nicest thing is that I can play on my dual screen setup without taking much of a hit in the FPS at all. So one screen is WoW and the other thottbot or wowwiki, which is incredibly comfortable. Also, I can just pull over my mouse at any point if I wanna browse for something. No alt-tabbing...

I started playing WoW on my PC back at beta and was impressed by the performance. 3 years ago, I went back to a OSX environment and was impressed with the performance of WoW in that environment. After my staff saw how well it played on a Mac, they all made sure they all purchased MacBook Pros to work and play. The only time we use Windows environment is when we need to administrate the network. I do agree Windows 7 is a very impressive OS and I've been working with it in a virtualized environment but for WoW addiction, my MacBook Pro and MacBook all the way. It consistently amazes me how Blizzard Entertainment develops and delivers a hybrid product at launch amazes me. I can understand now why they repeatedly make the best without having to deal with platform/OS bias.

Kinda hard to answer with just one. If I'm playing with my wife or raiding on on my gaming PC but if I'm playing solo and doing other things I'm on my mac-- like I am now. So really it's both for me.

I play on my Macbook out of necessity, its just not ideal for any gaming. I do plan on buying a gaming rig when I can afford it, but I needed the Macbook for school and thats where my computer money went, so I've been playing WoW on it since BC.

I've been playing WoW (and other games like TF2, L4D, HL2) on Linux for years now. I can't say how the performance compares to that of WoW on a Windows installation because I haven't used Windows as my O/S in many years. It's definitely nice to be able to play a game like WoW and not have to worry about a virus, trojan or other form of malware stealing my account information. But then again, even when I was on Windows, I wasn't the type of person to download random programs, visit seedy web sites, or not use anti-virus and anti-spyware.
The only downfall of playing WoW on Linux is that there isn't a native Ventrilo client. The Linux port for Ventrilo has been in "development" for how long now? I say let the creator protect his precious code, I'll use another chat client (Mangler comes to mind, which is actually compatible with Ventrilo).

I play WoW on a Mac. I am happy. Nuff said.

I've always used Macs, since my father's business uses them and for most of my childhood I just used his home computer. Right now I have a Powerbook G4 I bought back in early '05, and it runs most of WoW fine on minimal settings. I only get lag in places like Dalaran or the choke points in AV.
Since I'm an RPG guy, consoles are usually fine for me, so I don't really need a nice PC. But whenever I do get a new one I'm thinking of switching to PC. As much as I love the Mac OS, the hardware usually just isn't worth the price compared to a custom-built PC.

I used to be a Windows user, until the day when I tried Ubuntu. The changeover was a little nerve-racking, but I found that WoW was one of the first games I got running. I second the poster who said it runs better than XP; you seem to lose the bloom effect, but it just feels smoother.
I never looked back; I use Windows at work (games designer on Win / 360 games), but a couple of us are Ubuntu-using WoW players. If I could get other MMOs working under Linux, I might be tempted away, but even those who say they support Linux (like EVE formerly did) tend to have broken functionality or UI issues. WoW is, hands down, one of the best multi-platform MMORPGs I have played, probably because it is one of the most stable.

Where is the option for both? I have a MacBook Pro laptop, and a custom built PC home desktop, and the WoW client installed on both. My one beef with the Mac client is that I have yet to find a way to make the CMD/Splat key be the ALT key. I'm so accustomed to ALT being just left of the space bar, and that's just not the case on the Mac. Not a big deal, in the end.

Either use a PC keyboard, or…
System Perferances -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Tab -> Modifier Settings… (in the lower right corner of the preferance pane)

I have a desktop Windows machine, with a 2-year old video card and decent CPU/RAM setup. I get roughly 25-30 fps with medium settings at 1024x768.
I was lucky enough to get a unibody Macbook Pro a few months ago, and after installing WoW on it, I routinely get 50+ fps with high settings at 1440x900.
Its a tremendous difference. The only challenge I have is that my desktop is arranged physically better for long-term playing, so I often find myself playing on it anyways.
Just have to get used to it, I suspect.

I've been using MAC since Windows Xp Pro-which i think was the best version of Windows in a WHILE-I love my MAC. It's really cool-though only a silly perk- that i can do the ö, ä and so on chars right off my keyboard. I haven't seen much difference in Graphics but all my friends who play on Windows remark about my great display and color when they see me on my MAC. I GREATLY appreciate the trouble Blizzard goes through to run a MAC version of WoW! Brave of them to persist where other seem not to care.
