Are set bonuses outdated?

Ghostcrawler shows up in the thread and says that the game would be pretty boring if set bonuses weren't included -- I presume he means that you'd just upgrade your gear according to iLvl, and that would be that. He even says that he wishes the tiers varied more, but players really want to see "unambiguous upgrades" to their items. People need rewarding when they move up, so GC can't mix things up with the various bonuses as much as he might like.
Obviously, I don't agree the set bonuses should be done away with -- I think they do add a nice twist to the game in terms of making interesting choices with your gear. And they also provide direction in terms of upgrading (in fact, I wish there were multiple lateral sets to choose from, much like we had back in the late vanilla game -- do I want this set bonus or this one?).
But I also think the problem could be solved by expanding choices in terms of gear. A while back, the set bonuses were changed from a full nine piece set down to the current five pieces, so that people would have more flexibility in terms of choosing their outfits (rather than locking everyone into a full set all of the time). And I think that was a good idea, but I don't like that we lost the full set. I think Blizzard should keep just the two and four piece set bonuses, but then expand them out into nine pieces of gear. Include the boots and bracers and belts, but leave the bonuses at two and four pieces. That would give us more options in terms of building up our characters, while still leaving us free to collect the set pieces as we wanted.
Of course, there's a lot of other balance issues there (you'd be able to set up two set bonuses, and who knows if Blizzard ever planned for that when they designed gear). But I think rather than removing set bonuses, Blizzard should let us do a little more mix-and-matching.

Gotta say, I really like the idea of having a full 8 or 9 piece set with only 2 and 4-piece bonuses. If having 4 pieces each of 2 different tiers was too powerful, maybe Blizz could do something like disabling the lower tier's 4 piece bonus if this happened.

should have refreshed before responding...lol
I'm thinking this should be done for sure

call me crazy, but isnt this exactly what happened when the sunwell was released? we didnt get a new tier of gear, we got 3 more pieces added to t6, and the same 2/4 set bonus. I dont recall seeing anyone wandering around with 4 t5 and 4 t6 though, simply because the t6 (and equivalent) gear was simply BETTER than t5, so the set bonus would have to be stellar to make up for it.

ho my GOD ! just remove ALL hard/rich/complex/diversity of the game. Juste give us Mighty BLANK GEAR with crazy stats every month and a real mountains of gold
and end wow.
(I understand the point yes, bonus set can be annoying when you have to break them to upgrade, but please, you really want to trivialize wow until oblivion ? Blizzard is not enough nice ? you know the next step will be infinite speed gryphon, and after that infinite teleportation)

Agreed, but to a lesser extent.
Take the Hunter two-peice T5, which heals your pet for 15% or whatever amount of dmg you do. Massive dps increase? No. Worthless? No. Interesting, especially for the obscure percentage of players who like to solo old content? Yes.
I think I remember a quote from a developer that said something like, "the best set bonuses become talents."

Oh God, I basically stopped micro-managing my pet with 2-piece T5. When I started doing Hyjal and BT and started getting some T6, my pet started dying all the time simply cause I was used to just making sure it wasn't standing in fires.

I actually think more setbonusses should be added. Even greenies should give setbonusses.
E.g. : Revenant Gauntlets of the Champion give +33 Strength, +50 Stamina, +33 Defense Rating
I would suggest that multiple "Revenant {item} of the Champion" should give +2 str/sta/defence for 2 set bonus and +20hit/20parry for the 4 set bonus

^this. I miss the old random sets like ironhide that had silly, sometimes foolish, set bonuses that just catered to the way you played. Gearing should be a choice based on what you do and how you do it. If Blizz did away with BiS gear and made the options more varied, we'd have a richer game.
ToyChristopher Nov 23rd 2009 2:24PM
Honestly, I think that is the only way to make set bonuses more "interesting" because there would be more than one choice per tier (unless they really want us to choose to wear old gear - which I don't think they do). I don't think they do this though because it would take too much development time.
Kadamon Nov 23rd 2009 2:48PM
I have to agree.
There needs to be more random set bonuses on gear.
Jorges Nov 23rd 2009 4:37PM
Actually I think that Blizz should enforce even more the Diablo approach of random generated enchants/set bonuses. Like the pople above me says, it would make an even richer game.

You look at the level 80 tailoring Greens & Blues and it's all catered to 2 set or 4 set with extra spellpower, or haste, or spirit, etc, based on whether you're gonna go DPS or Healer. Why couldn't they continue the trend for something you'll wear longer than a week, like non-tier epics?

id like to see larger sets, 5 pieces out of a possible 10 (not including weapon or trinket slots) seems trivial
or jewelery sets which had popped up in the past
or at least a reason to wear all 5 pieces of tier 9 triumph.
Eisengel Nov 27th 2009 10:55PM
i agree with all this and more. :^)
I liked the large sets of yore, sure they were hard to assemble, but they were fantastic once together. The idea of having a 9 piece set, but with bonuses increasing in power after every 2 or 3 pieces sounds great. I also like the idea of multiple sets. I had a lot of fun mixing and matching Arena, crafted, badge gear and drops in BC to optimize with the pieces I had.
When BC started up gear was simplified by dropping a lot of the fun procs that would appear, and at the same time most of your abilities' power was shifted from level progression into gear stats. In late BC the stat consolidation started making gearing simpler. Now after further consolidation very little of the gear looks distinctive, and everything has massive globs of 1 to 3 stats, and very few, if any, special procs or bonuses.
The game has always been heavily gear-based, but the gear has become more standard and boring... which I think has carried through into the game itself. Honestly it feels more like an ilvl quest than anything else. There is no more balancing or careful choices, if a piece of gear has a higher ilvl, it's better. It doesn't look very different, it doesn't perform very different.. it's just better. You get it, equip it, and then raid some more to get your next gob of ilvl.
I'd like gearing to have some nonstandard options rather than a great big neon flashing arrow saying 'hey, this thing is better, use this'. I still have a lot of fun in Diablo 2 using different weapons and other pieces to stack up certain effects. For instance I stacked up pieces of the Angelic set's jewelry to make a melee Sorceress that had a massive attack bonus. There is nowhere near that level of customability now. I recognize that making more items and effects makes the game harder to balance and longer to produce, but honestly, it's my dime, not theirs. For this reason and a fistful of others, I'm not paying Blizz to develop WoW any more, because frankly I don't like the way Blizz is developing it.
I didn't make the game gear-focused, Blizz did, but with a gear-focused game the least they can do is make the gear halfway interesting.

I wonder if tier sets could alternate from tier to tier with what is included in the set. As it is now, while you are forming your new set, you drop DOWN from your 4 set bonus (when you have two or more of the new set) to your 2 set bonus. It can be a long time before you get your new 4 set bonus. Currently, the sets are Helm, Shoulders, Chest, Legs and Gloves. Maybe they should do bracers and Boots (with helmet, shoulders and chest, for example) the next time so you can have go from one four-set bonus to another without dropping down for a considerable time. The tier after that they can go back to the Legs and gloves for the same reasons. Yes, Yes, I know the higher tier set is usually so much better that it still pays to upgrade, but some of the 4 set bonuses are very cool...and to loose them...OMG...im going to cry just thinking about my diseases not critting on my dk.
erico Nov 23rd 2009 2:18PM
I love having sets - I think the trade-offs are actually kind of cool. I agree that bringing back the 9 piece sets would be even cooler as long as they kept the 2 & 4 piece bonuses. Maybe the extra set pieces could have different combination set bonuses - the 2 & 4 pieces form a foundation while the extra pieces represent different specs for the class.
I'd also love to see additional consequences of having full sets beyond simple stat bonuses. If you have a full set, you get an additional graphic aura or halo surrounding you, or maybe a special title shows up. Something which visually rewards people who go the extra mile to put together a full set.

If anything, I'd like to see Blizz move even further toward the complexity that set bonuses are an example of - procs, complex bonuses, anything that will make it difficult to mathematize (not a real word?) gear choices.
