Are set bonuses outdated?

Ghostcrawler shows up in the thread and says that the game would be pretty boring if set bonuses weren't included -- I presume he means that you'd just upgrade your gear according to iLvl, and that would be that. He even says that he wishes the tiers varied more, but players really want to see "unambiguous upgrades" to their items. People need rewarding when they move up, so GC can't mix things up with the various bonuses as much as he might like.
Obviously, I don't agree the set bonuses should be done away with -- I think they do add a nice twist to the game in terms of making interesting choices with your gear. And they also provide direction in terms of upgrading (in fact, I wish there were multiple lateral sets to choose from, much like we had back in the late vanilla game -- do I want this set bonus or this one?).
But I also think the problem could be solved by expanding choices in terms of gear. A while back, the set bonuses were changed from a full nine piece set down to the current five pieces, so that people would have more flexibility in terms of choosing their outfits (rather than locking everyone into a full set all of the time). And I think that was a good idea, but I don't like that we lost the full set. I think Blizzard should keep just the two and four piece set bonuses, but then expand them out into nine pieces of gear. Include the boots and bracers and belts, but leave the bonuses at two and four pieces. That would give us more options in terms of building up our characters, while still leaving us free to collect the set pieces as we wanted.
Of course, there's a lot of other balance issues there (you'd be able to set up two set bonuses, and who knows if Blizzard ever planned for that when they designed gear). But I think rather than removing set bonuses, Blizzard should let us do a little more mix-and-matching.

It would be nice if instead of given set bonuses having multiple pieces could open up set based meta gem slots and have class specific gems you could purchase, kind of a choose your own set bonus. That way you could choose bonuses based on your character needs, not so much a given all elemental shamans probably need "X" and all holy priests probably need "X". That way tier pieces could work with non tier pieces easier.
Just an idea.

I look at some of these Paladin sets, and they have remained with now-useless bonuses like "increases Judgment of the Crusader damage by X%". Lieutenant-Commander's Redoubt comes to mind specifically, but what is Blizzard's logic? "The set is outdated so nobody will grind Honor for it anymore, so might as well leave it as is"? Well maybe ~I~ want a golden suit of armor with a freaking eagle on its shoulder, have you considered that Blizzard? :(

I like set bonuses. But the kind I like are the ones that do different or interesting things. My favorite set bonus is the Hunter 2-piece Tier 5 bonus. It was different, and more importantly, it is still useful today. I'm never going to equip most of the old tier pieces that litter my bank except perhaps briefly out of a sense of nostalgia. But if I'm going to solo an instance and think tossing mends won't be enough to keep my pet alive, I'll snag my two pieces of Rift Stalker armor (SSC and TK were never kind to me with tier drops. I only ever won Tier 5 gloves and pants on my hunter.) I'd love to see a trinket or something that replicated that bonus, as I'm sure most hunters would.

The problem with set bonuses isn't the basic idea, it's that they are often really poorly implemented. They are either so terrible that they aren't worth going after, or they are so good that you end up in a situation where you don't want to upgrade to the next tier of gear (set or non-set) at all because you'd break the set bonus.
That said, I like the idea...it adds an interesting element of gearing up beyond just raw stats. It's just that sometimes how set bonuses are done is not too impressive. But "outdated"? I don't think so...

Here is an idea, if they think we want rewards for our effort how about they make the gear not look like warmed over crap?

Maybe they should replace the concept of set bonus with a stylizing principle. This could be a part of the Mastery system...
For example, you have several bonuses available if you have pieces of epic gear of a level or higher. As A warlock, I would have the Plagueheart bonus for having 2 to 4 pieces of epic-level 213 gear, baseline... but I could also have the options using the Malefic, Corrupter, or Voidheart Bonuses.
Once I upgrade my gear, as soon as I get 2 pieces of 219-level epic gear, I could drop Plagueheart for Deathbringer, or stick with Plagueheart. So on and so forth up the tiers of gear.
Another option is to create a constantly modifiable talent-tree of sorts in the talent tabs. Each "tier" of gear would give a player another point to spend, as long as they had 2 pieces of epic gear of that iLevel

Set bonuses were always, at least to me, the lure that enticed you to go after the set along with the visual styling of the set. Back before EJ became the bible of all things gear, people would grind their hearts out for X set because it practically defined your class at that stage of the game in both stats and appearance.

I really like the idea of eight or nine piece sets with one two piece and one four piece set bonus. I can't tell you how many times I see an item upgrade that I can't go after because rawr says nooo don't break your set bonus. Getting rid of the set bonuses all together is not the right idea because it would just further contribute to the dumbing down of the game. A side benefit of the eight or nine piece set is the reduction of homogeneity in how characters look in the game. Go ahead and make the T9 sets exactly the same across multiple classes to save dev time, but make the sets bigger so we can customize more. I think this would be a great change.

I agree with the writer.
With the current triumph emblem gears, the head and the shoulder 245 means I have to sacrifice the 4 bonus set for the T9. Expanding the tier set could solve that problem.
I need a new tanking shoes!

i rember using tier 1 prophecy set on my priest exclusivly for bwl because it made many fights simple as cake on group healing (we had less tricks back then for raid healing but it worked well). Once we hit aq 20/40 the tier 2 set was the way to go. I hate haveing to replace a whoal tier of gear because the next tier beats it(or dosent aka deathknight tanking set). the early tiers of gear were almost generational through content yes the tier 1 priest set didnt have the mp5 or the spellpower to beat tier 2 for single target healing but it was nuts and bolts group healing it was ideal. I wish more sets would last a patch in usefullness cause its a real pain in my ass haveing to regem it to fit the max amount of dps/hps/tps because the set has more of x so you need less of x. gear needs to have a situational construction to it like in the old days of people actualy needing a fire resistance set nature set shadow set frost set. the good ole days of vanila are gone but the work of makeing raids exciting shouldent.

This makes me really miss my Netherwind focus. God that rocked.

For me most important "set bonus" is... set itself. It's Design, to be more precise.
I'm sick and tired of current gear mess!!! Bloody awful vinaigrette.
