Blood Pact: Meet the minions, part 3 - the succubus and crowd control, page 2

Death Coil
This is an instant cast spell that not only damages the target and heals you, it also applies a Horror effect for three seconds. Horror is different from fear in that it can't be removed but that's not a big issue on a three second duration (except maybe in that PvP thing). This is very handy for interrupting casters but while it is instant cast, it does have a travel time, so if you are a long way from the target they might finish the cast before it lands. It's also good for buying enough time to follow it up with a Fear. The two minute cooldown means you don't get to spam this one too often, so make sure you use it at the right time.
Howl of Terror
This is essentially the same as Fear in that it makes those affected by it run about screaming. The differences are that it doesn't last as long (8 rather than 20 seconds), doesn't need you to target anything and affects five targets rather than just one. This is all sounding good but if I have several mobs around me then typically they are hitting me and a 1.5 second cast isn't quick enough. It can get you out of some jams though, especially if you use the voidwalker bubble trick. You can also spend some points in Improved Howl of Terror to make it instant cast. Generally this is less a matter of CC, more a matter of buying a little time to run away and regroup.
Seduction
This is where the succubus comes in and shows off her party trick. Seduction has a cast time and is then channeled which means if she's doing this then she's doing nothing else. That's okay though because it leaves you completely free to do all the other stuff. It's a very fragile spell, in that damage to either the mob or the succubus will break it, but the fact that it's being done by the minion and not the caster makes it very powerful indeed. I found it was especially handy in places like Shattered Halls and Shadow Labyrinth where there were large groups of trash. I always used a macro to manage it as it can get very fiddly, especially if you are also fearing another mob and nuking a third (see below).Intercept
Not commonly considered as crowd control as it only lasts for a few seconds but when needed, it can be used as CC. If you're pootling about soloing or grinding with your felguard then it's not a bad idea to just let him Intercept whenever he likes. It can delay the mob doing damage and hold them in place while the big-fella gets some threat. In instances and raids you often don't have need of the stun effect and the only reason to leave Intercept on autocast is so he gets into a fight more quickly. If you leave it off, however, you can then decide to use it at need. A focus or mouse-over macro turns Intercept into a handy panic button.
Another use I find is in the gauntlet for Thorim. As the first mini-boss dies I send a Death Coil through the door at the healer, my FG then dashes in and stuns him. In the 6 or so seconds this guy is unable to fight, the DPS have plenty of time to get into place, do a load of damage to him and be ready to interrupt any heals he might try to get off.
Macros for crowd control
Crowd control can seriously distract you from your main job of doing damage and from knowing what's going on in the fight -- both bad things to be minimized. It helps to have macros that take away the awkward work of retargeting etc. I tend to use the focus frame before the pull and set it to the target I need to look after -- this way I can use this as a condition in the macro and also keep an eye on the CC debuff so I know when it runs out.
You set your focus by targeting the mob and using the following command:
It's handy to have this as a macro on its own and then you can hotkey it to save time. Once you have your CC target focused you can target something else (the one to nuke for example) and then use a macro like this for the CC:/focus
This will cast banish on the mob you have focused without changing your current selected target. You can change Banish for Fear or Death Coil but if you want your minion to do something you need one like this:/cast [target=focus] Banish
These are fairly basic macros and if you want to get more fancy you can add in all sorts of extras to make them more useful. For example, here's one I found on Wowhead that is very similar to the one I was using in those TBC heroic instances:/cast [pet:succubus, target=focus] Seduction
This looks a little daunting but basically it better controls the succubus and will either seduce your focus or (if you don't have one) it will focus your target and then seduce it.#showtooltip Seduction
/clearfocus [modifier:alt]
/focus [target=focus,noexists]; [target=focus,dead]
/clearfocus [target=focus,help]
/petstay
/petfollow
/cast[pet:succubus,target=focus,exists,harm] Seduction; Seduction
That's it for this week -- who knew spells that don't do damage could be so much fun? Don't forget to send in pics of dead, or otherwise compromised, mages to arcanebrilliancepics@yahoo.com and bloodpactpics@googlemail.com; especially any pics of one particular mage. I'm off to go and get sweet, feathery revenge on all rogues.

...wow.
It's been a long time since I played a warlock, and I only got one to level 36 (back when you got a mount at 40), so I had no idea that they had so many useful CC tricks. I'm putting off playing one again until I can play a Worgen, but (as happens often with your columns) I'm going to have to come back and reread this. Very, very good work, Mr. Hobbs.
Also: "Hunting Belt"? Bwa ha ha!

Heroic Magister's Terrace was where I mastered warlock CC. Mostly because I was seducing one mob, banishing a second, and chain-fearing a third. It was insane, especially that PVP-style boss fight. Wrath has dulled those skills, though. I'd probably get eaten alive if I tried that now.

one nice thing to know is that deathcoil is a horror effect, howl of terror is a terror effect and fear is a fear. as such they don't share diminishing returns and if you have to you can keep someone feared for a while by cycling through them.
ScorchHellfire Nov 24th 2009 2:06AM
um... no... there's no such thing as a terror effect... howl is a fear and shares dr with all other fears such as the priest and warrior aoe fears...
Jack Miles Nov 24th 2009 11:58AM
Even if it was named something different it could still suffer from Diminishing Returns. Fear and Seduce, for example, share DR.

Wheres the lock defensive love blizz?
As far as PvP goes, I'm finding almost every class in the game has some fear immunity in WoTLK. And warlocks don't have any other defense besides that(Succubus well...sucks).
Metamorphosis is available to Demon locks but thats a 51 spec talent and a demon lock has to severly sacrifice on dps for that.
So warlocks have very little in the way of defense after your opponent makes it through your 3 sec death coil.
Also, fear has diminishing returns and lasts about as long as it takes to cast the next fear which makes it impossible to set up any kind of rotation.
Mages have, sheep, frost nova, invisibility, blink, ice block, mirror image available to ALL mage specs.
It's almost impossible to catch a slilppery mage.
myst Nov 24th 2009 3:12AM
you have devour magic.
Dragoniel Nov 24th 2009 5:54AM
Why would you try to catch the mage if you can simply stand and nuke him down? While spellocking him or keeping seduced through counterspell or just doting and spaming fear.
There are 2 types of mages: frost, which specializes in surviving and you can negate nearly all of his defensive abilities (devour magic, spellock or just seduce) and an arcane, which doesnt have any survivability at all and is all about insane damage - which you can easily interupt, spellock, cc the mage and kill him while /dancing and chatting with 3 friends at once.
Seriously.

Best "Meet the Minions" article yet. Keep up the tips and how-tos for tactics... I've leveled Demo 20 to 80, and am now raiding affliction, and I still learned a few things.
One pet I haven't used much, though, is the Felpuppy. And apparently, 3.3 is going to make him much more useful for raiding Affliction specs... so, I can't wait for part 4!
shuaigejay Nov 24th 2009 4:29AM
you forgot enslave demon. my favorite spot in the game for a lock used to be mechanar (esp. heroic mech). There were groups of 5 demons and a human. One lock could handle 4 of them. :P
enslave one
use enslaved one to tank another one
banish one
fear one
/press iwin button.
Fung Nov 24th 2009 4:29AM
http://www.macroexplain.com/ makes it ez.
i prefer one that does fire shield if imp, sacrifice if blueberry, seduce if succ (shift for focustarget), and silence if felhunter (again, shift focustarget)

i just bound the pet attack button and the petskill 5 button to two handy keys, that way regardless of which character/pet i have i can use it quickly without many many macros across different characters (am running out of individual slots and the cross character slots got filled ages ago :))
All those skills you listed, i drag into petskill slot 5 and hey presto, it stays like that unless they muck up skill bars for any reason
Binding it makes it useful for your other class characters too, hunter pets all have useful skills you want to control manually, taunt, prowl, shell shield, bird-of-prey-mana-back-thingy are the ones i'm using off the top of my head, but my frost mage has the ranged frost nova of the elemental on that button, death knight has gnaw and so on. No macros, one keybind.
It doesnt do focus, but i deal with focus with seperate part of my interface
actually, thinking about it the button next to those two is bound to nearest target and shift+ is target focus (use a speed pad so dont actually remember what that button is, probably R)

Great column - I've raided affliction for over a year, but I still learn something new every week:)
heath Nov 24th 2009 11:45AM
i really think you should have done a separate article for cc.
aside from the fear/deathcoil/HoT/seduce/intercept, we also have these cc options:
silence: spell lock
stuns: shadowfury, warstomp, inferno
snares: glyph'd shadowflame, curse of exhaustion, improved fear
heath Nov 24th 2009 11:56AM
oh yeah, forgot to add the banish/enslave in the list. :o
i haven't played all the other classes, but i really do think locks have the biggest varient of options (although many of them aren't all that powerful).
Phortex Nov 24th 2009 9:54AM
The succubus macro didnt work :s had to change it alittle. Nevertheless a great article! keep it up :)
Gorgonzola Nov 24th 2009 10:35AM
Good write-up.
I feel bad for those who missed Vanilla and grinding through Felwood. It's a great place to learn how to CC.
And with the hit on heirloom gear, it's also great to utilize Banish and Fear on the Laden Dew Gland quest in Tanaris where the Elemental mobs are generally orange or even red when you get the quest.
But I really did learn lock CC in Jaedenar and in Felwood in general.
You can successfully utilize Banish, Fear, Seduce, and even Enslave in Felwood and Desolace. And that's right about the time your lock should be getting to the point of not missing with its spells either.

A few notes regarding the Succi. I tend to solo with my Succi out, and usually dot and drain my targets. With the seduction set to auto-cast, I have noticed that if I get attacked by an add, she will stop what she is doing and turn to seduce the add. I love this feature. Also, if you have a feared target running in a direction you don't want them running in (I swear, they run to every other mob possible) you can have the mob seduced.. they will stop in place, scared and seduced at the same time.. Very useful.
heath Nov 24th 2009 11:54AM
heroic mechnar...the problem with heroic mech is that when you went in there, everyone was like "Oh, a lock, do all the CC". It was a given that a lock would CC, and imo, wasn't appreciated.
buut...when you went into shadow labs and did that same thing (enslave a succ, use her to seduce a human, banish another demon, and then fear one)...everyone was like "Holy crap, a lock can really CC".
sad that LK gives no class an opportunity to shine like that.
nick2k22 Nov 24th 2009 12:46PM
You guys obviously play mages.
I'm not talking about giving the locks more crowd control. Right now crowd control is our only defense and most classes have abilitys that make them immune to CC.
Im talking about some sort of self-defense like ice block or blink. Something to allow a warlock to get out of range when they're up against a player that has popped his CC immunity ability. We're defensless against:
DK's spell immunity, rogues stunlock, Warriors fear immunity/charge, Hunters silence shot, druids berserk, etc
I don't mind being weak against one or two classes but we're basically defenseless against every class if the person has half a clue of what they're doing and pops one button.
(And don't get me started on the overall uselessness of Circle of Summoning)
