Why is it that azeroth is populated by such careless and forgetful individuals? You'd think, especially with all those monsters and beasties running about the place that they'd make some effort to keep hold of their stuff. It's not as though there aren't enough banks around.

Personally I reckon they're all being a little disingenuous:

'Oh how careless, I seem to have dropped my daughter into the mouth of some giant sea-monster. Again. Ah well, guess I'll have to stand here and wave down some buff warrior/slinky shaman to run around getting all sweaty on my behalf. Oh no.'
