15 Minutes of Fame: Vive la resistance Part 2

Is it is even possible to have world PvP without getting rapidly overwhelmed?
World PvP is there, if you know where to look. If you find out what the daily Heroic is, chances are the summoning stone is going to be controlled by Horde. If you want PvP, hit it up and make them work for those groups. Last week I took a Heroic group into AN and OK and on the way out saw a group of Horde. We charged and then kept the Horde from the summoning stone for a good 20 minutes or so. Of course, numbers outmatch skill, and we were soon overrun.
What proportion of the players who rerolled or transferred over would you estimate are still active today?
I would have to say around 75 percent of the people that I rerolled with are still here. Of course, a few of them have left the server for greener pastures or have faction-changed to Horde. We have our fair share of tourists (those people who are all about it, roll on the server -- then see that it truly is dead and leave), though. We also have our fair share of level 1 Trade trolls telling us how badly our server sucks. I personally came for the challenge, as did many others, and a challenge it has been. Overall though, it's been "fun," and that's what this game is all about.

The Resistance was a great idea. It brought attention to this server and got many of us to reroll. The interaction today, though, is a bit broken. We've already had a large guild drama session play out on our forums regarding raiding. Its seems that if you can't progress to Anub'arak (hard modes) within a month of hitting 80, you're obviously doing it wrong. The community is strained right now, and it's difficult to keep a positive attitude about it. If you join into WG late and aren't part of the premade, you are torn apart by the trolls. If you don't care about raiding, you are torn apart by the elite.
Some of us keep trying to tell everyone that we don't have the membership to be able to be elitist, but it's bound to happen (and is). This in turn just makes it harder to get things going ... which in turn brings down the community ... which in turn makes people wonder why they play on Cho'gall ... which in turns starts the whole cycle over ... A few of us try to keep a positive face against all the negativity, because I've seen this community band together, and it's an awesome thing to be a part of.
What would help the Alliance the most at this point: Rerolls? Transfers? Entire guild transfers?
More rerolls are always a good thing, but I don't think it's the answer. Too many people don't have the patience to wait for people to go through 80 levels of content, get geared up and then start raiding. "I want my ice cream, and I want it NOW" seems to be the prevalant attitude in WoW.
Transfers?I think transfers would help the situation if Blizzard would open Alliance-only transfers from ALL servers to Cho'gall, close off character creation for Horde (unless you already have a Horde on the server) and close off faction changing DURING and for a month or two AFTER the transfers.
So what about you? How has the situation affected your own enjoyment of the game?
It hasn't affected it much. I get enjoyment out of this game just playing it, whether that be in a group of five people tromping through a heroic, a group of 10 of us heading into somewhere and slaying a dragon, or even 25 of us heading somewhere and taking down a boss. My enjoyment comes from the interaction between the people.
What's your outlook today?
As frustrating as it is, I can't force people to do things or to care about this or that. This experience with you guys has shoved that home for me. I figured Alliance would jump on the opportunity to get our story out and have people learn about our plight and possibly join us. They all talk about it, but when it comes to action ... Well ... You're met with silence.
I stay optimistic -- how can you not be, when you're outnumbered by thousands? Unlike some, I try not to dwell on the negativity of the situation. Where some people see thousands of deaths at the hands of the Horde, I see thousands of new HKs.
[Thanks, Tom!]

This only gets attention because Ixo whines about it.

I am a hard-core FOR THE HORDE type of gal, but the stories I've heard about Alliance on this particular realm make me want to roll a space goat or something and try to help out. I've leveled on PVP realms before and tend to be extremely patient about campers and greifers... it reminds me of the times my 0.0 security space EVE ONLINE characters have been station-camped for days on end by cap fleets.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for pain. :) *scuttles off to roll an alliance alt*

I'm also Horde and not from that server, but I applaud these blues none the less. I remember being outnumbered on one of the servers I was on, and while it could be frustrating, it's what really brought out my Horde pride.
Keep up the good fight Cho'gall alliance! Glad to know there's some of you with balls ;P

I am also a die hard Horde.
But I think both Factions deserve a fair chance to fight.
besides I allways wanted to see end game Alliance :)
Gonna either transfer or create an alt.

I think Aleksey is a pretty cool guy, eh kills horde and doesn't afraid of anything.
On a serious note though, this is a good article, even if lots of people [forum lurkers] already knew about the problems on this server. Personally, I wouldn't mind sending my Alliance pally (who is now collecting dust on Nesingwary) over. I think guilds like the Resistance are great (in theory, not necessarily in practice) for the game, because it stays true to what Blizzard (supposedly) wants factions to be all about. Giving players a sense of unity over something other than raiding/arenas and focusing not just on world pvp, but on simply surviving each time you fly out of Dalaran seems pretty cool, but on the extreme end, no one likes to never have control of Wintergrasp or be ganked by 20 belf DKs every time you try to kill your 10 converted heroes for the day.

While I wish them luck, there's no way in a million years I would ever play on a server like this. The idea of having 50 Horde hanging around the summoning stone who all can kill me when I just want to run an instance is pretty lame.
I think that's one of the problems with imbalanced PvP servers like this. They just encourage the imbalance to get progressively worse because one side can make life miserable for the other. You don't have that kind of power on a PvE server.
Kuro Nov 24th 2009 2:30PM
oooh.. So.. that's why I hear about Garona Horde going off to Cho'gall from time to time -- usually they want more PVP, but want to stay in the Rampage BG.
Garona has a similar problem 4:1 in favor of alliance.
If I had a spare high-level character, it would be tempting to transfer there just to revel in a numerical advantage in WG for once.
jealouspirate Nov 24th 2009 2:39PM
I thought that as an Alliance player on Maelstrom I had it bad! (about 3-4 Horde for every 1 Alliance)
But now I'll count my blessings.
Pantyraider Nov 24th 2009 2:42PM
So glad I transferred off that server... and I'm horde.
Speedmonkay Nov 24th 2009 2:43PM
If this was facebook this article totally would have gotten a "Like". Lately the server I play on has had a slump and its been hard for alot of guilds, but nothing like in this article. I couldnt imagine having to do leveling or progression raiding on a PvP server where the horde outnumber the ally, people just keep dropping, people switching to horde (aka the winning side), many joining are elitist and people just dont care. Kind of makes you look at your own realm differently and makes your realm problems seem not so bad.
It would be really cool to start a new WoW.com column called Realm Status. Once a week or so it would pick a realm (or battlegroup for special stuff) and do a write up on whatever is happening on that realm.
yuka Nov 24th 2009 2:46PM
Ah... I'm from Cho'gall, and while I'm horde, i wouldn't mind you guys putting up an article showing our side of things, eh? Not all of us like having such a bad imbalance but have too many friends on the server to do anything about it :P
Also "Numbers = Skill?" yes, sometimes, but i've also taken a few of you alliance 1v1 and triumphed :P Not all Cho'gall horde sucks! (although i wouldnt argue we have quite a few rather ...special players...)
Dahk Nov 24th 2009 2:46PM
Sounds like they got plenty of alts there already... they need Mains!
Shizu Nov 24th 2009 2:50PM
I'd roll an alt to help out, but I'll be honest: I'd probably never make it to 80 to even do any of the endgame things. I'd be endlessly frustrated if a) I couldn't quest because Horde kept killing me (really, I am *bad* at pvp of any kind, even one-on-one dueling) and if b) I couldn't get into an 80 instance because of Horde killing everyone.
Cho'gall Alliance, you have my respect. /salute

I rolled on this server about half a month ago after seeing a post in the general forums on it, and I gotta say, it's everything the article says it is. I've been running census as often as I can, two or three times every night, and so far I've only seen around 340 alliance 80s. 340 capped players on a medium population server.
Besides the population imbalance, what's struck me about this server is the tightness of the players who've been around a bit. Outside of the new transfers, EVERYONE knows each other. There's really a small town feel about it alliance side.
Scott Nov 24th 2009 2:49PM
Silver Hand has a severe imbalance of Alliance. Thankfully 90% of the decent raiders are Horde and the Alliance with half a brain are switching over to actually participate in progression.
uncaringbear Nov 24th 2009 5:56PM
Hardly. The population imbalance on Silver Hand is nothing like that described in this post.
As for that old nugget about SH horde being more skilled, that may have been true back in the vanilla days. Most of the skilled horde left the realm ages ago when Blizz (in one of their brilliant moves) allowed free transfers off SH. All we have now are belf rerolls and horde wannabes.
Ken Mann Nov 24th 2009 3:07PM
I've been Cho'gall from the beginning, and its been rather sad to watch it progress to the state it is in today. I refuse to transfer off, pride (not to mention the cost to move all my toons) keeps me. Hopefully the numbers close somewhat in the future, maybe the expansion will help bring people back.... but not matter what happens, I'll be there, even if I'm the only one.
Maoismo Nov 24th 2009 3:11PM
Good to see the Alliance getting some attention, you guys deserve it! I'm a relatively long time Cho'gall Horde (early BC) and I look forward to the time when balance is restored on this server.
ShadowPriest Nov 24th 2009 3:12PM
In all honesty ( and i don't mean to bash servers or anything like that) but i honestly think Cho'gall is a dead server for Alliance, and is past the point of recovery. I will admit that the efforts of Cho'gall's Alliance was admirable, but the difference is not a 2:1 or even 4:1. To be honest i think Blizz should think about balancing the other servers with smaller differences, Like my dear Ravenholdt (US), by offering freezes on certain faction transfers and offer free transfers to servers depending on the faction that needs balencing..

my main is on Cho'gall and i've been around here for years. It used to be one of the top US servers on both sides, with Death Wish [http://deathwishguild.com/] on horde side and Vanquish [http://www.vqguild.net/] on alliance racing for World, US and server firsts. I really never understood what started it all, yet slowly but surely the alliance numbers began dwindling and dwindling. With such a one-sided environment the top guilds transfered off (on both sides).
Now I will go days without seeing an ally "in the wild" and whenever you do it becomes the talk of general as half a dozen bored horde will chase down whichever stragglers are around.
It's really not that fun to be on the majority side either. Wintergrasp is boring, I've gone entire battles without seeing an ally.
It's essentially a PVE server as far as horde is concerned.
