Potential character model revisions in Cataclysm

This particular tidbit comes from the Warcry network interview with J. Allen Brack and Samwise Didier about the game's anniversary, and it's about a subject near and dear to our constantly-complaining hearts: new character models. They might even be coming in Cataclysm.
Says Brack:
That's pretty big news."Even though things would be better with new (character) models, we'd probably spark a lot of player outrage. So we've talked about giving players a choice between the classic models or the new ones, but it might not be something we want to take on at the same time as we remake Azeroth."
We've been wondering about the status of these old models for a long time. His language indicates that it might not be a Cataclysm feature, but we sure hope so. Troll models are a bit long in the tooth -- pardon the pun -- and human males desperately need an update more than almost anything. But really, all of the pre-BC models do. Even just a few extra polygons and animation fixes would really help. Draenei, blood elves, and now goblins and worgen all look so good compared to our old dumpy avatars.
If you're wondering why less character customization options exist in WoW than in many other MMOs, just ask Samwise, who had this to say:
Makes sense. Just, please, Blizzard. Listen. Make everyone's models look better -- the number of people who'll complain that their human female just isn't as moonfaced as she used to be is incredibly small compared to the number of people who'd resub in anticipation of not having a hare lip on their human male. Don't worry about the luddites. Just bring WoW's graphics into this decade, and bring our models with 'em."We gave very simple choices, and there wasn't any of this 'Is my guy five pounds overweight? Are his eyes sea blue or sky blue?' Don't get me wrong, that sort of thing is cool, but we made a very simple UI and character creator, and that's one of the main things that helped people gravitate to the game."
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.Filed under: News items, Expansions, Interviews, Cataclysm

And it can't come soon enough!

This would be awesome, this is something ive been saying forever, just that they should make it an optional content DL. since lots of ppl play wow specifically bc of its low end requirements.

Honestly after playing 3 human females (Paly, DK, Priest) over the last 2 1/2 years, I'll be insanely pissed off if they go and force-update the models. Two and a half years-- My avatars are who they are. I don't want to have to re-customize a character I've spent that long around. Their hair, their faces, this is who they are.
I'm all over it for re-rolls and new alts, but please, Blizz, don't screw with the characters I already have and love.
Eternauta Nov 24th 2009 2:08PM
Seconded.
Also, are those the Worgen models for Cataclysm?
They are very very very VERY superior to all Vanilla AND BC models. Even Blood Elves look like crap compared to those guys.
They look like taken from another game. It would be cool if Blizz updated the Vanilla and BC character models, and gave the option to turn on/off the "classic" models for nostalgics and people with low end pc's.

@Faulken
Change? In my Warcraft? RAAAWWWRR.
No, these models definitely need an update. Nothing drastic, just more polygons to smooth out the blockyness.
tim Nov 24th 2009 3:21PM
@Colin,
They need more than just more polygons. They need models that don't don't glitch out--like the way trolls, male orcs, female tauren, and male humans do in particular. Aside from desperately needing help with aesthetics (making the human males run naturally, for example), they need help with just basic stuff, like shoulders not rotating at unnatural angles during certain movements.
They also need MORE faces - I mean, female trolls have like... 4? and all but 1 are hideous.
Don't sell it short. I don't care how many people love their ugly avatars, Blizzard needs to update the game after 5 years. They can always let people keep their old-world models.

Oh I agree, this would be awesome!

I would definitely love to see new models for each race. But, I think the idea of giving people the option to use the current ones or new ones, if implemented, is a wonderful way to go. It pleases everyone and that just seems like win/win.
Also, I'd be so ecstatic if they'd offer us a color palette for our hair. Rather than offering us a handful of hair colors, they could just offer us a large palette that we could scroll over. This would give us endless colors and shades, and I think many people would love having more options in that way.

I really think their hesitation over players being dissatisfied with their character's new looks is really simple to deal with. Just give an automatic, free character customisation option to all members of a race as their models are updated. BAM. No one can cry that they don't like their character's new face, because they get to reselect it.

Faulken is getting downrated for saying he's fine with other people updating their toons as long as he gets to keep his the same? Sometimes wowinsider ratings make me wonder.
Alanid Nov 24th 2009 1:04PM
Well... I'll be hard forever now *gets hammer*
Hoaxs Nov 24th 2009 1:12PM
Red Dwarf FTW.
mibluvr13 Nov 24th 2009 1:20PM
Bow chicka?
niko Nov 24th 2009 1:05PM
i mean, sure, up the poly count or whatnot in time for Cata.
I'm not going to cry if they don't change the models, though. I love my characters just the way they are. If they get smoother because of increased definition, that's fine, but I don't feel the need to change just because the newer races have more polys.
It's just a bonus. :)
epicboyz Nov 24th 2009 1:06PM
thats why i play an orc. green is always in fashion.
RogueJedi86 Nov 24th 2009 4:25PM
Too bad it kills any chance of a player being a Garadar Orc who hasn't experienced the corruption of Demon Blood. Brown is the color of untainted Orcs, Green is the color of Orcs who drank the blood of a demon(Mannoroth mainly), with it being implied to be genetic(thus Orc children in Orgrimmar and such are also green). It'd make sense since BC has happened and Orcs have made amends with their Nagrand cousins. Adding the brown customization option would be nice for RPers and couldn't be that hard to do.

Based on the evidence at hand, I see one of two possibilities:
1) The Plague of Undeath only affected men with identically and abnormally large noses.
2) Identically and abnormally large noses in Azerothian men is a sign of a strong mind and will, which is why only former Azerothian men with identically abnormally large noses freed themselves and became Forsaken.
Undead models are fine, Blizzard. Just give the men different faces. Please?
Arkeband Nov 24th 2009 2:14PM
Undead models are SO not fine. Tier 9 gloves currently have half my hand sticking out of them, that's how poor it is. I don't mind the 'ragged' look, but the 'torn' look are just triangle-chunks, which makes it look like a shark bit our sleeves/pants.
I don't think there would be player outrage by changing parts of the player model that are modified by armor anyway.
Gregor Nov 24th 2009 3:35PM
I don't like undead's bad posture..i want a upright undead..if only :/
Yourhero88 Nov 24th 2009 1:08PM
Honestly by the graphical standards of the game now, many of the races (I'm looking at you orcs and humans) are downright unplayable.
Bring this on!
