Potential character model revisions in Cataclysm

This particular tidbit comes from the Warcry network interview with J. Allen Brack and Samwise Didier about the game's anniversary, and it's about a subject near and dear to our constantly-complaining hearts: new character models. They might even be coming in Cataclysm.
Says Brack:
That's pretty big news."Even though things would be better with new (character) models, we'd probably spark a lot of player outrage. So we've talked about giving players a choice between the classic models or the new ones, but it might not be something we want to take on at the same time as we remake Azeroth."
We've been wondering about the status of these old models for a long time. His language indicates that it might not be a Cataclysm feature, but we sure hope so. Troll models are a bit long in the tooth -- pardon the pun -- and human males desperately need an update more than almost anything. But really, all of the pre-BC models do. Even just a few extra polygons and animation fixes would really help. Draenei, blood elves, and now goblins and worgen all look so good compared to our old dumpy avatars.
If you're wondering why less character customization options exist in WoW than in many other MMOs, just ask Samwise, who had this to say:
Makes sense. Just, please, Blizzard. Listen. Make everyone's models look better -- the number of people who'll complain that their human female just isn't as moonfaced as she used to be is incredibly small compared to the number of people who'd resub in anticipation of not having a hare lip on their human male. Don't worry about the luddites. Just bring WoW's graphics into this decade, and bring our models with 'em."We gave very simple choices, and there wasn't any of this 'Is my guy five pounds overweight? Are his eyes sea blue or sky blue?' Don't get me wrong, that sort of thing is cool, but we made a very simple UI and character creator, and that's one of the main things that helped people gravitate to the game."
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. I agree. Just please do this and don't worry about the complainers. Actually, Blizz DIDN'T worry about the complainers (or give them a choice between old and new) when it came to the bear and cat forms so...
Anyone who wants their rather dumpy looking, poor postured ,and saggy boobed human female will get over it.
Xandari Nov 24th 2009 5:07PM
I'm all for model updates, but really, dumpy-looking and saggy-boobed? Poor posture? I'm going to assume you've only ever seen women in post-photoshop internet porn, or perhaps in anime or fanart, rather than an actual live female.
Imnick Nov 28th 2009 9:58AM
Be nice if they would fix some of that beard/moustache/helmet clipping too while they are at it
RetPallyJil Nov 24th 2009 1:35PM
I would welcome a CHOICE, via the Beauty Shop or something.
But the pre-Wrath "Whoops we hit the wrong button; why are you people freaking out that your she-toon's face totally changed to a big-nosed, liver-lipped, squinty-eyed freak?" stealth change was not cool.
I'm perfectly happy with my anime-ish face. The human males, however ... oh my.
P. S. PLEASE, NEW DANCES! PLEASE, NO MORE MACARENA!
Deadly. Off. Topic. Nov 24th 2009 3:01PM
Nods.
While I don't hate the Macarena, I would like to customize my dances.
Especially, especially WANT to get rid of that horrible Thriller dance for my night elf. I don't mind other people liking the dance, I just don't think it suits my elves though.
slyman.is.god Nov 24th 2009 5:40PM
that's Billie Jean. Thriller would suit Worgens though :D

I really cannot express how much I would like to see them update character models.
My main is a female tauren. And while I love her and would never change her race, if her model suddenly looked better, I would rejoice. Even something as simple as having a few more face options (we have four) would be amazing. Bonus if we could actually customize our manes a bit and maybe have, I don't know. Some personality? And some extra polygons so that her fingers don't look like some sort of strange 8 bit sausages would be awesome.
No one I've talked to would cry about their character looking better. And you know, even if they did, I'm sure they'd get over it. Druids have new cat and bear forms. The world didn't implode when these were introduced. If they can change the way a class *functions* every patch in the name of balancing PvP, I'm pretty sure they can update character models without losing too may customers.
RetPallyJil Nov 24th 2009 2:15PM
Druids were begging for that change.
Ninety percent of the people screaming for new human female skins are people who don't play human females.
We're pretty happy the way we are, thanks.
Velina Nov 24th 2009 3:58PM
@Julie:
I agree, I'd like to have a little more option for face and hair customization with tauren females, as well as troll females... trolls and orcs both need a few more not-ugly faces too. Trolls have one and orcs have two. :(
Possum Nov 24th 2009 8:34PM
@Velina
If the one decent troll face your're talking about is the blowup dollesque look of ditzy surprise I wouldn't even count that one. Seriously, check the female toons of all the races at least one of them has the wide eyes, slightly open mouth and raised eyebrows of a blowup doll. I wonder where Blizzard got the impression that women looked like that ;)
Irem Nov 25th 2009 9:02AM
@Possum
Gah, thank you. I can't stand the "dull surprise" look on the cuteface troll or the second cuteface female orc, and I find them less attractive than I do the so-called "hideous" faces that actually have some personality and look like they're marginally aware of their surroundings. It makes it worse when every other troll female I meet looks exactly the same, and all of them appear to be pondering the void.
IMO a lot of the "ugly" faces are actually pretty cool-looking with the right color combination and hairstyle.

Dear Blizzard:
! ! ! ! YES PLEASE ! ! ! !
Please get rid of the human women who have hips that could pop twins out at the SAME time.
I've been asking for this for a while, and it'd be such a welcome change.
So, please Blizzard, if you're reading this..
Michael Morhaime, Allen Adham and Frank Pearce.
From the bottom of my little gnomish heart, I beg of thee, please, bring a model over haul to the previous races.
Your modelers did such a fantastic job on the Draenei, Blood Elves, Worgen, and Goblin..
The older races just need this kind of commitment, and would be utterly amazing.
Thank you!
Minifig.

See, another person who doesn't play a human female flapping their lips.
Go comb your pink ponytails; the grownups are talking.
Deadly. Off. Topic. Nov 24th 2009 3:07PM
Could this be a "gasp" freudian slip? Were you really thinking about women, but meant to type the word ‘men' instead? Although that comment about birthing the twins would then make no sense...
The only hair lip I can see is on the male models for the humans.
Imnick Nov 24th 2009 4:35PM
RetPally please stop making irrelevant claims based on no evidence at all.
I don't play a human female but I still think they look ugly, and I don't want to have to look at them.
slyman.is.god Nov 24th 2009 5:45PM
I play a human female and I think she looks incredibly stupid and ugly. That dumb face... and that stupid dance.. god.. Blizz please save my toon. I'm not even going to start with male humans.. those hideous creatures are so ugly I would never roll one.
Dementron Nov 24th 2009 8:13PM
What's wrong with their hips? They look a lot more normal to me than most of the painfully skinny women you see in media these days.
Personally, I think the human women look way too skinny and frail to be adventurers. They don't look ready to take on an ogre... they look like you could sneeze on them and they'd fall apart.
Most of the female models I've seen from the alpha screenshots were pretty frightening, but I actually rather liked the human females. They looked like women who could go into combat and stand a chance.
theminifig Nov 24th 2009 10:45PM
RetPallyJil - I'm a 29 year old male and I've been playing MMOs for longer than I care to admit. I've played every single MMO released so far, and I'm just -SICK- of the older player models.
Kindly don't tell me to bugger off when the adults are "talking", I'm an adult, and I've been known to tell Blizzard that this game needs updating in the Cataclysm boards.
If anyone needs to bugger off, it's you, .. so bugger off. The real adults are talking.

The picture used above is really cool. Do you guys at wow.com have a high res version of it?
fleabyte75 Nov 24th 2009 2:22PM
Yes the human males do look like they have hairlips! When I travel Northrend and see those hulking Vrykul I realize just how wonderful humans could look in the hands of Blizz artists. Also NE women look like total junk next to BE women.
The changes in art are one of the things I most look forward to in the xp.
The moment I heard that Org was getting a "Northrend" facelift I started scouring the net for more info on art changes.
