Potential character model revisions in Cataclysm

This particular tidbit comes from the Warcry network interview with J. Allen Brack and Samwise Didier about the game's anniversary, and it's about a subject near and dear to our constantly-complaining hearts: new character models. They might even be coming in Cataclysm.
Says Brack:
That's pretty big news."Even though things would be better with new (character) models, we'd probably spark a lot of player outrage. So we've talked about giving players a choice between the classic models or the new ones, but it might not be something we want to take on at the same time as we remake Azeroth."
We've been wondering about the status of these old models for a long time. His language indicates that it might not be a Cataclysm feature, but we sure hope so. Troll models are a bit long in the tooth -- pardon the pun -- and human males desperately need an update more than almost anything. But really, all of the pre-BC models do. Even just a few extra polygons and animation fixes would really help. Draenei, blood elves, and now goblins and worgen all look so good compared to our old dumpy avatars.
If you're wondering why less character customization options exist in WoW than in many other MMOs, just ask Samwise, who had this to say:
Makes sense. Just, please, Blizzard. Listen. Make everyone's models look better -- the number of people who'll complain that their human female just isn't as moonfaced as she used to be is incredibly small compared to the number of people who'd resub in anticipation of not having a hare lip on their human male. Don't worry about the luddites. Just bring WoW's graphics into this decade, and bring our models with 'em."We gave very simple choices, and there wasn't any of this 'Is my guy five pounds overweight? Are his eyes sea blue or sky blue?' Don't get me wrong, that sort of thing is cool, but we made a very simple UI and character creator, and that's one of the main things that helped people gravitate to the game."

I remember seeing an ad for some console FPS game which boldly stated, "The model for this soldier's helmet has more polygons than an entire level in xyz game". This instantly reminded me of why so many current games are dismal: high polygon count is used as a crutch to get around lack of art direction and design. We end up with games that look lifeless, lacking in any style and swamping our hardware.
There is a reason why WoW continues to be the dominant mmo in the market, while other games which boasted huge polygon models (cough *aion*, cough *conan*) are doing not so well, to say the least.
Pretty =/= Better
Raze Nov 24th 2009 6:44PM
Aion isn't doing well? Huh?
Just because it doesn't have ten million odd subscriptions doesn't mean it's not doing 'well'. Yes, WoW's the most popular MMO ever, but that doesn't mean every other MMO is a clunky, crappy video game with no fanbase that can't support itself.

I don't understand why people seem to think: higher detail character models = Everquest 2 or Aion. The goblins and worgen have much higher detail and they still remain 'true' to the Wow stylised art style. I'm pretty sure they could manage this for the rest of the races. It's not about to become the World of the Uncanny Valley, no body is asking for that.
Veplerion Nov 24th 2009 6:21PM
I hope so.
Make it similar to the quality increase with the druid cat and bear forms, or the newer Jiana model.
If you don't want to piss off people that like the face/look of their old character, just keep them in there. If people want to look ugly, that's up to them. :P

New models is a slap in the face!
lol, jk WTB new models so my race changed hunter doesn't look like a douche.
splodesondeath Nov 24th 2009 6:46PM
Ooh, ooh! Idea!
Bring back the slim male blood elf! Just fix the skeleton so it doesn't stick out this time, and you've got him perfect!
Also, yay new models!

If they update the polygon count on the models and make minimal changes in terms of overall look, I have no problem with them doing it.
If they go so far as to change the look itself (like, trolls going from current to looking like the super buff ones) then I would like at least to have the option to keep the old models like EQ did with the... I think it was Lucian? expansion. You could chose between new and old models since some races the updates were awesome, and others the updates sucked.

I can see why people are all for the vanilla models getting a second look, but to be honest, the BC models could do with a fix to, nothing major, I would be content with them stopping my blood elves eyebrows pokeing through every helmet/hood I have them wear
Dementron Nov 24th 2009 7:50PM
Personally, I love the eyebrows poking out. Adds character. XD
Nipah Nov 25th 2009 3:05AM
It happens to Night Elves as well...
After a while, you either turn off helm graphics or you get used to it...
Dementron Nov 24th 2009 7:59PM
I like the cartoony style, and I think it does age better than hyper-realism, but the older models still desperately need some upgrading. I think better poly counts and clipping fixes are a must, not to mention better face and hair variety. I'd love to be able to make a female troll who doesn't look like either a stoner or an angry cat.
If I could anything, I'd say more options for piercings and tattoos for all the races, which shouldn't be too hard to implement, and some variety in body types, which would be a bit harder (since they already have to make all armor work for two sexes in ten, soon to be twelve, races). In addition to muscular figures, I'd love to have options for skinny and pudgy bodies.
Chuque Nov 25th 2009 1:07AM
Heh. I definitely agree about needing more Troll faces, but I found it impossible to agree with your statement as phrased; after all, most of the Trolls I have 'met' in the game really DO seem like stoners or angry cats. XD
Reeelaaaaaaax. ^.^
LarryK32 Nov 24th 2009 8:02PM
Yes. This would be pretty awesome. I would love for my forsaken to have a mustache. Lulz would be had.
Codexx Nov 24th 2009 8:18PM
I won't be complaining if you fix my human male.
But if Blizz does these updates, I'd like the ability for them to look slightly different based on either class or by choice, preferably without needing more than 1 model per race/gender combination. I just don't think it's right that my Mage is just as muscular a Warrior. It's not so much a problem for other races as it is for Humans though.
As for an outrage, I think people would be pissed. But they'd probably get over it as long as the models do look better across the board. Sure some people may remember the old ones fondly, but if the new ones are without a doubt better, people won't have a reason to complain. They still will, but it will be invalid.

All I have to say is this:

That is a gorgeous new model they have given Jaina, I would love my female paladin to have a model like that... then again I also wish she could walk up stairs...
For a while I swear the climbing stairs thing was fixed but it seems like it happens again. (not sure if this is model related or environment related)
colinwbruce Nov 26th 2009 5:24PM
Yes.
Yes.
Do it. Now.
Hairfish Nov 24th 2009 11:33PM
Those Aion characters are pretty, but they all look like The Sims 2 sims to me. Even the current, original races in WoW have more ersonality. That is NOT the direction I want my WoW-toons to go!
Hairfish Nov 24th 2009 11:38PM
"Even the current, original races in WoW have more ersonality."
That should be Personality. :P eed dit utton!
JadeTempest Nov 25th 2009 1:08AM
This, would be the single thing that brings me back to Azeroth.
Unnil Nov 25th 2009 1:28AM
I hope they change the tauren models so they actually fit on their mounts and don't look so damn sluggish !
