Breakfast Topic: What do you do when your server is down?
The players on the Emberstorm and Whirlwind battlegroups have had a rough week. A massive power outage, huge network issues and other problems have forced them away from their virtual homes to find refuge elsewhere. Some have joined the It came from the Blog guild on Zangarmarsh, where we have had two impromptu server outage parties. The picture above is from Tuesday night's shindig.
Others have commented in the outage posts that they have formed level 1 raids on other servers. And of course there are other games to play.
Personally, if both Zangarmarsh and my main server are down, I figure it's time to start watching what's on the DVR and knitting. What do you do when your server is down?

When the main server is down, we arrange to meet on the backup server we have alts on and play there. If that one is down, then it is time to catch up on sleep.

When my server's down, I make an alt on another server. Or, if I can't do that, I play Warcraft 3 or Starcraft.

I love that you mention knitting; it's my second favourite pastime. I swear, flight paths are designed for knitting ..
If not on wow or knitting, I'm usually reading blogs and forums about one of these hobbies. Oh well.

apparently, i check this site and my realm status app on my iphone obsessively, and then give up and go to bed early. again.
sigh.

I usually have a fit of nerd rage, then go play on my PSP, PS2, or find another game until Blizz gets it together.

I usually head over to Sentinels (US) where I have an Alliance DK that I rolled to placate some of my friends...that way I can honestly tell them I am leveling that toon (very, very slowly).

Read, play with my cats, do wash, do dishes, play some other computer game (Red Marble Games FTW), write letters or, depending upon the time it crashes, go to bed. I sometimes think that there should be random crashes just to force people to look outside the game and remember real life.
AWK! I don't like real life! Gimme back my game!

Playing TF2 is the only suitable alternative to playing WoW. Obviously.

you guys need to get out more :|
anyone here go to the gym, have relationships that don't involve technology?
it's as if this game is life and you take a break for real life, rather than the other way around.
yikes :p

I have a real life, I work out every morning from 6am to 8am, before my classes. I have a schedule set up so that I get my homework done. And on that schedule is a gaming time, so if WoW is down, I'm still going to be playing a game.
saland Nov 25th 2009 10:19AM
I should say, I raid a few times a week, for a few hours at a time, so I'm certainly not guilty of loving WoW :)
It was just the way it's worded, that makes it sound like real life is the game and when you take a break, you do real life stuff, so I had to comment.
And the lack of physical activity is stereotypically accurate :D

The way I read the question was "what do you do when your server is down, when you were planning to play". I don't think most of these answers means that people only do real life things when their server is down. I have a schedule much like Legance with time to study, work out, see my friends, and play. The only reason it's a bit annoying for me if the server is down is because I most likely haven't got time to play later.
Avene Nov 25th 2009 10:04AM
I run around in a frenzied state of panic ;)
Nah, actually I just go do real life stuff. Clean or something. Or in the unlikely event that there is nothing that needs to be done around the house, I read blogs and check out stuff on youtube. If the downtime isn't planned and I expect my realm to be up soon, I am guilty of checking back quite often, though.

This week was a blast from the past. When Hyjal went offline I decided to go through my original Xbox games and find one to play. So since the original blackout, and server offline hooplah I have actually been playing GTA 3. Thats right, 3, and I am almost done with it, even though I haven't played it since it came out.

I sneak in extra lovey dovey time with the husband, play Oblivion on the PS3, catch up on Dexter's episodes I missed, do a massive kitchen cabinets cleaning, catch up on real life friends gossip, etc. I mean, the game being down doesn't end my day or ruin it, I just go whatever is it that I do when I'm not playing, which I do even when servers are up, since I don't spend every waking minute in WoW.
I must say I dislike when server goes down when we're in the middle of killing Anub, the day before yesterday on 10 H ToC at 1% health, and yesterday on 25 ToC.
macdee34653 Nov 25th 2009 10:24AM
Go to a diff realm with my guild and we play horde chars until the server comes back up.
Mikah Nov 25th 2009 10:27AM
I used to go play my low level alt on Magtheridon to add to the lag over there...
I always thought it would make them try to fix the other problems fasters...
Guess I'll have to create a new alt on Tarren Mills!
Squirr3llywrath9 Nov 25th 2009 10:38AM
Play MW2. Duh. Been raining here, so outside isn't really an option.
manniefaces Nov 25th 2009 10:41AM
I personally have alts on a couple of severs that are mid to high lvl. This way if there is a realm issue I have something else to do.
