One Boss Leaves: King Dred chomps Herald Volazj

The heat's on in the Two Bosses Thunderdome -- not only in the ring itself, as competitors slash, cast and bash one another on their way toward the final matchup, but in the comments too. How will style balance substance? Who can make the best case for a victory? This week, the votes pointed to King Dred. The great devilsaur raked opponent Herald Volazj 50% to 46%.
Spectators who sided with King Dred put their faith in his sheer power. "... I think this one will have to go to Dred," observed Psiwave. "I'm a Herald fanboy (Lovecraft FTW!), but the herald is punching at mist here. Dred runs on pure instinct: no doubts, no regrets, just hunger."
But plenty of readers believed Volajz's tricks would carry the match.

So, yeah, Dred blows through his own set of clones ... Why look, four weakling copies of my minions! CHOMP CRUNCH NOM NOM. But he then has to face a clone of himself for each add he's summoned, and these clones have all of his abilities. He's stupid, so he'll have summoned a bunch of adds. Remember all those bleeds everyone says Volazj has no way to counter? Dred is equally helpless to counter them, and he's going to have a set from each clone he has to kill. The relative weakness of the clone doesn't matter ... all they have to do is raise their claws. Honestly, I doubt he'll make it through Insanity #1, and if he does, he re-enters the fight with three to five sets of his own bleed effects. The worst he can do to Volazj is one set. If, as instructed, we assume comparable damage output in terms of basic slugging, Dred's health will bottom out a whole lot faster then Volazj ... and that's without even looking at Insanity #2.
catharsis80: My response to this is further up on this page of comments. In short, remember that any melee can SOLO ALL the Insanity spawns. They're weak. Now think about King Dred. Yeah.
Granted, the idea of the Insanity spawns applying the bleed effects is a good point. However, the spawns are really weak, and I highly doubt Dred would take enough damage from the weaker bleeds before Vol will take his full health amount in damage from Dred Prime's bleeds.
Clydtsdk-Rivendare: Vol's Insanity adds are only weaker than you because if they were the same strength you'd wipe easily. Lorewise, the strength probably remains the same, and thus Dred plus four or so of his own bleed effects goes down sometime during insanity #2.

Hey cool, I'm in the article :D
Too bad Volazj lost though--dinosaur fanboyism at its best.
catharsis80 Nov 29th 2009 9:32PM
Fanboy? Not this time. Lore wise, Vol is cooler. However, mechanics-wise, I voted for Dred.
Clydtsdk-Rivendare Nov 26th 2009 9:14AM
I don't really like ads but at least it's not "FURST L0L!!one"?
Rexton Nov 26th 2009 9:19AM
Pretty sure Volazj is bigger, or at least heavier. Just throwing that out there.
Paultab Nov 26th 2009 9:33AM
How is King Dred still winning? Do the people who vote for him still have dinosaur bed sheets and pajamas?
Jonisjalopy Nov 26th 2009 9:41AM
Hey, hey ,hey! How DARE you bring my dino sheets into this! They did NOTHING to you!
AudreyR Nov 26th 2009 10:09AM
Eh. I figured the Herald could have used his abilities to kite the dino, making Dred's dot's null. But it looks like most figured Dred in Volazj's face. :/
Outis Nov 26th 2009 10:28AM
The reason why Dred would win is very simple.
Step one: Dinosaur the size of... well, a *massive dinosaur* applies jaws to the head of a relatively small Thing That Should Not Be.
Step two: What do you mean, step two? Did you *look* at what goes on in step one?
Volazj's abilities are well-suited to enemies who attempt to wear him down via attrition. They are not so great against a gigantic Devilsaur who can BITE OFF HIS HEAD IN ONE CHOMP.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
While dinosaurs and C'thulhu spin-offs are equal on the Great Meter of Evil Monsters (beaten by C'thulhu himself of course), I wish Volazj won.
Hm... 4 insane King Dreds, plus Herald Volazj, plus regular dumb King Dred... sounds like a PAJAMA JAMMY JAM!
Bedessa Nov 26th 2009 11:58AM
Look obviously Dred's clones are just as stupid as him, and would probably attack Volazj as easily as Dred.
Clydtsdk-Rivendare Nov 26th 2009 12:17PM
Volazj's clones are created, and by extension controlled by Volazj.
onilord228 Nov 26th 2009 1:47PM
ugh I'm getting tired of the ridicules votes people are making for these things...aside from fanboyism for dinosaurs, people only seem to vote for who they thought was hard for themselves to fight...
OLDMIKE Nov 26th 2009 2:05PM
not true the dino is a REAL EZ fight never seen any one die in it
BuzzDX Nov 26th 2009 2:09PM
What fanboyism? Volazj's Insanity creates copies of your party to fight you. In this case, Dred would face weak versions of, if he even had any out, raptor adds, and then fight the copies of himself from the raptors. They're a lot weaker and Dred can keep them CC'd with his Fear Roar, weaken them even more with this other roar, and claw his way past them.
After that, he can get back to stacking bleeds on Volazj.
I also think that, despite the explanation I made above, you're trying to mess with the mind of a bloodthirsty predator. I don't think you can really do much on that front.
Besides, you could make the argument that Volazj can just cast Insanity on any and all of his opponents and automatically win the entire contest, which is boring.
Dadruidess Nov 26th 2009 4:20PM
I voted for King Dred for a simple reason:
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=59416 (Raptor call) does not SUMMON adds, it simply calls them. in an Arena, however, I doubt the adds will be there (because, you know, in DKT you can kite dred away from the adds and kill him without any adds coming, or so I think).
So, there are no adds. Insanity is, therefore, not doing anything.
Thus, it would be an easy win for Dred.
Dadruidess Nov 26th 2009 4:19PM
Also, Volazj CANNOT possibly win because of Dred's bleed effect that lasts until healed. In the worst case scenario (for Dred) it's a Tie.
AudreyR Nov 26th 2009 8:44PM
Except that the rules state that while on neutral grounds, bosses would have access to their usual resources. I'd consider the extra raptors some of Dred's resources. :/
Rai Nov 26th 2009 5:00PM
Volazj should have won because Dred could not open the door to the arena.
...oh wait.
Vodkamartini Nov 26th 2009 11:05PM
King Dred slouches from The Old Kingdom, sniffs the air, and heads to what he senses are warmer climes.
The cold and indigestion from the strange thing he defeated down below are a bigger pain for the terrible lizard than the mind games the shadow beast was able to inflict.
As Herald Volazj makes the transition from flesh to dung, the wind whistles from the entrance of the Old Kingdom. It could be the passing of air, of gas from King Dred, or the sound of a thousand screaming mad voices: "Dinosaur fanboys!"
The Old Gods' fear of the loss of nonsense is for now, abated.

I think too many people are stuck on game mechanics here. If King Dred were a real dinosaur and Vol-whatever was a real whatchamahoozit, considering both are similar size, Dred would win due to TEETH. Does the big evil elephant have teeth? No. Does it have teeth resistant armor? No. Is it made of Kryptonyte? Possibly, but Dred isn't from Krypton so it doesn't matter. My choice was based on the fact that T-Rex > something-squishy-and-not-at-all-dangerous, there is a reason T-Rex was at the top of the food chain.
