Breakfast Topic: When will you quit playing WoW?

I think likely it would be a slow death. I'd log in less and less, until I found that I wouldn't log in for months at a time. At that point I'd probably be sensible and cancel my account -- although it took an inordinate amount of time for me to cancel my EQII account where I did more or less the same thing. I'd like to think this is how it'd go at least, I wouldn't want to quit in a huff over some silly bug or class change.
Of course, this is WoW, and I find myself uniquely invested in it. I've got characters with hundreds of days worth of /played on them, and I don't know yet if I could ever stop myself from being able to have immediate access to them. They are a hobby, and investment, just like a detailed model airplane or schooner. Then there's also what I do here, which gives me a little unique reason not to ever unsubscribe.
But alas, it might happen one day. And that's the topic of today's breakfast nook discussion. When will you quit playing WoW? How will you go out? With a bang or a whimper?

the only ones saying that SW:TOR will "kill" WoW was the dunce when it was first announced. I don't think it's a "WoW killer" but will take a sizable chunk out of WoW's player base unlike WAR, AoC, Aion, and others for the very fact that it's BioWare that is making it. If it's even CLOSE to the level of SW:KotR, KotR 2, or Dragon Age: Origins than they'll have a hit. Though i do see this killing SW: Galaxies off as I see SW:TOR as what Galaxies should have been
I'll be rolling a Bounty Hunter for sure :D

Funny they should post this now, I've very recently started to take a big interest in Aion.
And now I'm leaving WoW for Aion.
I wasn't really bothered about it when it came out, but now that no matter what I do I can't seem to find a class that clicks.
I have two 80dks (Quit the 1st from wotlk launch, rolled a new one later on) and they're probably the most fun I've had in pvp with any class.
And tbh I don't enjoy it that much.
So then I think about PvE.
Running heroic after heroic to build up good gear, only to not be able to get into a decent raiding guild, coz "Soz, we full on nabknights lawl".
So I can try to pug it right?
Yeah, I pugged ulduar the other day, was fail but was eye-opening.
PvE is boring.
I realised there was a reason having a class that was fun in PvP as my raider was so important to me...
Pve is boring, its just stick to the rotation... stick to the rotation.... oh look, the boss is doing something vaguely dangerous looking, run to safety/away/to the switch/to the add etc.
So really I feel like I've had enough of the endless grind of getting money for mounts, proffs, enchants and whatever and just want to try something new.
Thats how Aion caught my eye, it is a beautiful game and the ability animations actually look exciting.
For example, the arms warrior equivalent (the gladiator) has an execute attack, rather then make the characters hands turn red and a little bit of blood spurts out, he actually swings his weapon around over his head and slams it down in front of him.
It feels like NCsoft actually put the effort in to make cool animations for the class spells, rather than use the same animation for everything over and over (I'm looking at you dps warrior!).
Anyway, I would just like to say thank you to WoW.com for a never ending, free source of enjoyable reading material and a great WoW resource.
As well as the WoW community themselves, you were dicks, you were shockingly friendly, and you were funny as hell, good luck to you in all your endeavours.
And lastly, no I'm not going to thank blizz, I want an apology from them for keeping my soul on hold for the last 3 years!!
Ah well, you've made me appreciate my spare time all the more thanks to that now, so thanks for that I guess.
I'm gonna miss y'all!

"Wasn't there an interview a few weeks back that said that they've had a total of some 40 million people who played the game and left, never to return? 10 Million subscriptions is a lot. But that doesn't mean people haven't left WoW and never returned."
Personally I'd prefer a game that was successful but not nearly as much as WoW. When a game becomes like WoW they probably will start making the same decisions Blizzard has made in the past year or so such as making the game even more casual than it already was. I hate how I have nothing to do in this game other than raid 1 day a week since TOC and TOCGC is so incredibly easy and how Icecrown is being stupidly gated. They aren't even adding anything else in 3.3 other than a gated 5 man and raid and so there wont even be new dailies to bore myself doing.
I am hoping FF14 is decent since KotOR won't interest me much as I am not much of a Star Wars fan and Aion is just way to korean grindy for me.

This is funny because two members of my guild tried Aion and have now come back because...it's just that bad. Not the launch problems, but the lack of quests, the pointless grind, the drops, the inability to do anything about goldsellers and bots...
Yeah, some of this is a problem in WOW, but apparently it's worse in AION.

Hello,
I'm a dedicated reader of this site, but I've never managed to find the will to reply to any of the articles - until now. I do agree with you, my characters are just so much more then some virtual item, it's my hobby and I've dedicated countless hours to it. Think about it like someone who collects some kind of item, do you ever, in thier whole life, they are going to throw away something they dedicated years and more years to build up? No, didn't think so.
Its kinda sad actully, and that's the reason why I replied now. I don't want it to happend damn it! I hope WoW will stay alive long enough for me to truly loose my passion for playing. Just my thoughs, first reply got to be a good one, eh?

When Wow2 is out
Crimson Nov 27th 2009 8:25AM
even when wow2 comes out, I think as long as blizz still updates old wow with new content people would still play it.
So I think I would quit wow when Blizz stops updating it
and with cataclysm coming soon I don't think they will ever stop :P
perderedeus Nov 27th 2009 8:42AM
You won't see WoW 2. There's WoW, and there's the the expansions and content packs, and the game engine will be updated as needed.
Blizzard's next MMO is something new.
Ian Nov 27th 2009 9:22AM
@ Crimson: I don't think that'd happen. Why would they launch WoW 2 and continue to work on proper content for WoW? That's practically begging people not to sub to their new game.
Mike Nov 27th 2009 9:25AM
WoW 2 came out in January 2007. WoW 3 was released just pass November and we're now waiting on WoW 4.
I like to believe that the "expansions" merely only have that title because you're required to have the original game to play (ala The Sims expansions), but with the amount of new content with every expansion I would hardly put them on the same level as any Sims expansion.
MightyMuffin Nov 27th 2009 10:09AM
@Mike
There's only one flaw in your theory...
Sims has now made three starting franchises. The Sims. The Sims 2. And the Sims 3. All of which had expansions that were never considered "The Sims 2, 3, 4, etc."
So the idea of a second line of games with expansions known as WoW 2 isn't impossible, but I doubt they would try to make a new game of WoW only to have people say "Well back when I was playing the 'real' WoW..."
Ian Nov 27th 2009 11:21AM
I see what you're saying, Mike, but I heartily disagree. A big expansion pack is still an expansion pack.
Queso Nov 27th 2009 12:09PM
The lessons learned from EQ2, is why they will never make a wow2.
Granted, I would like a big graphics update, like what they did with EVE online(as long as I dont have to buy a new machine :P).
Graham Ribchester Nov 27th 2009 8:10AM
Already have. Realised at age 32 I have to be more productive in my life LOL. :)
Still enjoy reading about the updates though.
PeeWee Nov 27th 2009 10:01AM
I thought the purpose in life was to enjoy it? Well, if that means you want to spend your time being more "productive" then Kudos to you. As for me, my enjoyment comes from WOW. I don't get any from working, or a career, or family. To me, all that are just rewardless burdens with more drawbacks than advantages.
And no, trying to convince me otherwise is just a waste of time. c[_] This is the [Cup of Care], and it is empty.

Wow, Peewee, that is a really sad out-look on life man. You definately seem like the kind of guy who goes to McDonald's for Thanks Giving dinner. Well, I hope that maybe one day, your heart will grow large enough to share some roast beast with your family durring holiday seasons but if not, I at least hope you have a good guild to provide at least SOME sort of companionship.
Cavis Nov 27th 2009 8:11AM
I will stop playing when my wife stops playing. Without her I would probably quit already.
Ewok Nov 27th 2009 8:10AM
I'll stop playing when I get bored with it, but I use WoW as a social outlet as well as a game. I have friends all over the world I keep in touch with via WoW. Sure, there are other ways to do that, but WoW is a really FUN way to do it. :D
