The Care and Feeding of Warriors: A Warrior's Bounty

Completely unrelated to anything even tangentially warrior in WoW: Dragon Skin Armor. We're one step closer to gigantic magical battle axes being viable in modern warfare.
Since it's a holiday in the States (which I'm from, although not currently residing in) and because I'll take any excuse to gorge myself on turkey flesh and loll around in a swollen food coma (like, say, last week, when I used the fact that I'd washed red clothing with white clothing and now have a lovely pair of bright pink underwear and I don't care if you know) I thought this week we could compile a list of things we, as warriors, can be grateful for. If it's really an issue for you, assume it's Pilgrim's Bounty of something.
Anyway, let's you and I get our best grateful faces on (that's me being grateful up there, in case you couldn't tell) and discuss things we as warriors can appreciate.
Charge/Intercept/Intervene - I'm not sure what people in Azeroth actually pray to when they pray to the Light... it seems like an abstract benevolence slightly akin to the Force from the Star Wars series...but whatever it is, thanks for Charge and its iterations, boy howdy. No other ability can be seen to be as iconic and representative of a class (only Death Grip and Totems come close) as the warrior ability to get from point A to point B in order to put point C into something, or prevent point D from going into that helpful person in a leather miniskirt or what have you.
This particular trifecta of abilities (especially when talented with abilities like Warbringer or Juggernaut) have really grown on me over the years, and let me not pretend that Charge itself wasn't the ability that made me say "Yes, this is the class for me" after my brief dalliance with paladinhood. The ability to Charge in combat (or Intercept if you're fury) changes that "Haha, I slowed you and will now freeze you to death from over here" into a "Oh sweet Light why is a giant meat and metal thing whacking me in the face" situation that I find vastly more agreeable. And Intervene? Oh, sweet Intervene, thou makest me get out of the slowing field those stupid guys in TotC 5 cast, thou helpeth me past the bombs before Mimiron, thou help me get in front of the priest when the hunter pulls aggro and waits to feign too long. It's even good for PvP, if you can time it just right: I've used it to sheep the guy who was going to sheep my healer with a well times Intervene/Spell Reflect combo.
Seriously, I don't know how you could not love these guys. Thanks for everything.
Shield Slam - You know, when I first seriously specced heavy prot, back in Vanilla WoW, and got my first taste of Shield Slam, it was good, but not great, like destroying a scale replica of Monticello made entirely from toothpicks. (The best part of writing this column sometimes is waiting to see who gets the references.) Over the years they've beefed it up and made it a trainable ability instead of a talent and now it's a very solid damage ability as well as a superlative aggro generation tool (especially with Sword and Board procs for a tank). And it looks and sounds cool. You'll never get tired of hearing druids and paladins complain that none of their moves sound as cool as the Shield Slam "In the FACE KTHWANG" sound.
Arms - the Protection Tree overhaul gets a lot of praise from the people that overhauled it (well, to be fair, it's understandable that they're proud of what they accomplished) but while I myself am prot now, and will no doubt talk more about prot and tanking in the future, let us take a moment and be thankful for the Arms tree and its really elegant solution to the "Oh, crap, they can use two big two hand weapons over in fury now, how do we keep this interesting" scenario.
This is not to argue that Arms is perfect. At present it still falls behind in damage compared to fury at high levels of itemization, but man, it's astonishingly fun to play (especially in PvP, where arms has the mobility of Juggernaut and the once-every-1.25 minutes power of Bladestorm) and has become my DPS offspec of choice now that I raid as a tank. The numbers aren't quite as good, but it requires much less stringent gearing and it offers up a nice bag of tricks. Heck, just for being able to offer up the Mortal Strike debuff and avoiding the AoE DPS tax on Whirlwind arms is my favorite spec for Faction Champs. (By the way, if this was a list of things I'm not grateful for, Faction Champs would be on top of it.)
Gear - One of the things we often forget as warriors is that our relationship with gear has its really positive moments as well as negatives. This occurred to me the other day when a DPS bow dropped in a 10 man run with a bunch of Death Knights. The bow was passed to me to shard when I realized it was better than the DPS gun I had. Since a shard's a shard, I sharded my old gun and kept the bow (I informed the run of this, as it seemed rude to simply take the bow, and no one objected) and then thought about this interesting extra trinket slot.
Warriors can use pretty much any weapon in the game (we can't use wands) although in practice we're not going to use most of them. It's possible to build a reasonably viable staff Arms spec if you really wanted to, and similarly if you're a total fist weapon junkie and the fist is just going to be sharded you can pick it up and bash things with it for fun.
Sure, warriors who want absolutely optimal performance are locked into certain gear choices (I think I'm up to five tanking sets now, and I don't even have a dedicated frost resist set) and we most likely always will be. But I think that's part of the fun of the class to some degree, as long as it doesn't get too nuts.
That seems like a good start. Now it's your turn, and your comments.

Digital wizardry, perhaps? After all, the guy who played Gimli in LotR was taller than the actors for Legolas and Aragorn.
Really, I'm just going to go for any excuse to get Mr. Rossi to play a dwarf.
Crimson Nov 30th 2009 7:04AM
@ Julian
lol have you seen the actor who played Gimly in LOTR?
With computers everything is possible
I say Rossi should play Kurdran Wildhammer or something :)
Or maybe DrekThar since he has a beard, and like illidan is blind and doesn't wear a shirt xD

I leveled (I'm masochistic I guess) as Prot in bc, it was long, tedious, but I usually had a leveling buddy. It was work, really. I couldn't do Isle of QD very well because the respawn timers didn't give me enough time to kill & rest.
Then came The Change.
Suddenly, my warrior was an ae charging smashing machine. My little gnome chick suddenly earned that "hurray!" emote. Sure, I still dislike tanking for pugs, but sometimes i'ts just fun to swing out among random mobs and smash them.
I off-spec'd as Arms to dungeonwhen I don't want to tank, but it's not the same. Prot has stuns, silences, an area stun with a ground tremble! It's just freaking cool to be!
My main is a lock, and I've got plenty of 80's, I just wish (I know it sounds counter-intuitive) that there was a PvE Prot DPS build.
(Titan Grip & shield would be neat, but I love thunderclap & shockwave too!)

As much as I love the sound of my shield slam, I have to say that I am still envious of the paladin's hammer of the righteous. The loud "ping" of the hammer is just so satisfying.

A.K.A. Hammer of the Ringing Ears.

I don't play a warrior and never will but your intro was WAY too funny to pass by. You sir are a BEAST! ;-p

As a Rogue, I have to say my favorite TBC duels aside from Rogue v Rogue was Rogue v Warrior since trying to keep the Warrior's damage output down while I'm regenning Energy outside of a CC usage often depended on my ability to 5-8 Energy Joust outside of my cooldowns and their ability to counter the Charge/Intercept 5-8 Deadzone. The addition of Dismantle, along with usage of FoK + Double Crip Poisons (Or Glyphed Crip + Deadly) while in 5-8 trivialized Rogue V Warrior dueling for me.

"(I think I'm up to five tanking sets now, and I don't even have a dedicated frost resist set)"
I carry at least two pieces for every slot. Some slots have three pieces, maybe four. These are organized into the following sets (I love you, Outfitter):
Avoidance
Unhittable (for Anub adds)
Block
MaxEH
Magic (four-piece T8.5)
Frost Resist
Threat
So, yep, that looks like seven tanking sets. Then I have my DPS set, my Max iLvl set (for vehicles), and Naked (for quick mashing when I do something stupid like hit my Vargoth's staff macro a few hundred yards in the air).

That comment about a model of Monticello made of toothpicks sounds really familiar, but I cannot place it. Anyone?
videvekartuspaan Nov 28th 2009 11:45PM
was that a weekenders reference? I recall something like that happening.

I don't know the PoM Bldiiiing is pretty iconic of priests
kev_tan99 Nov 29th 2009 8:13AM
As a Warrior Tank myself, I say AMEN to what has been stated. Charge and it's alternatives are seriously the main skills of a Warrior.
As for Shield Slam, I can't express how thankful I am for such a pillar skill for tanking. Plus, it takes away 1 Magic Effect. Gotta love that! :D
Thanks, Matt for doing this column.

Other things I am thankful for:
SHATTERING THROW. Oh my god. No longer to I have to beat my head against my keyboard in helpless frustration or look plaintively at our already overworked priest when encountering a huge chunk of ice or a paladin bubble! Blizzard finally gave me my own personal nutcracker and carte blanche to feast upon the squishy nougat center; combine it with a juggernaut-powered charge and all of the sudden I get to send gibbets of you splattering all over that warm, safe place. This is what happy warriors are made of.
Sweeping strikes. Bouncing cleaves and whirlwinds (including bladestorm...) are a particular favorite of mine. I'm not just hitting one squishy, no... Not even hitting *two* squishies. I am hitting two squishies *twice* and watching anything in a dress run for cover from the metal covered avatar of death incarnate. Oh, happy day!
Namus Nov 29th 2009 10:34AM
oh I feel you... literally I have a mage and a paladin damn!!
Irontoof Nov 29th 2009 9:08AM
while we're on sounds, i also absolutely love the sound of a Bladestorm winding up. you know, the loud grinding sound in the beginning, before the whirlwind sound. however, i think cooldowns like Recklessness need a bloodlust-esque "RGLABLARGHALARGH" to them

Every warrior I know has stopped playing the class and has gone to Paladin or DK.
Why? Because those classes basically do everything better then Warrior minus a healing debuff.
They can't be kited, they have resources that aren't gimped if you can't hit something, they both have ranged snares and stuns, magic damage, healing through dps, shields, magic dampening, abilities to remove effects, pets, etc...you name it.
Warrior bar none is the worse class at the moment in the game in terms of design/resource system. I was looking at the IoC I was in today...literally out of 10 of them, the majority had 1 warrior..ONE, a few had none.
What did we have a ton of. DKs and Paladins.
It's time Blizzard really takes a hard look at the mess they created with these 2 plate juggernauts that not only can do amazing dps in pvp, but can survive for a long time and have the ability to keep THEMSELVES up.

Anyone who gets serious about playing a warrior realizes pretty quickly in the leveling process that you don't play one because they are easy, you play one for the challenge.
We don't feign death or go invisible, we taunt.
Warriors do not just hide behind a shield we slam it into your face then slice your armor open so we can hang the opponents balls from our sword belt as a trophy.
Other classes throw up mana shields, cast bubbles, heal themselves. Tanks and DPS warriors run in with our hair on fire and don't care if we do not get heals, so long as we take a big honor guard with us when we die.
Deathknights smell like road kill laying in the sun too long and whine and cry if the healer lets them drop below 75% health. OMFG WHERE ARE MY HEELS WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...
There are no real humans behind pally tanks. They are all bots controlled by the mage who gets tired of spamming the same two buttons so he dual boxed a Paladin.
Damm few times do any other class have to worry about one badly timed keystroke killing a raid.
Warriors spit in your eye, grin at you and invite you to bring it on. Show me what you have maggot. I need a light workout today.
FoxOfWar Nov 29th 2009 5:53PM
Lorewise, I love the feel of my(tauren) warrior. She's big, she's pissed, and... she's charging your direction. Time to act is now; in seconds after you're mincemeat on top the warrior's armor if you don't. I love the feeling of the iron-clad juggernaut of carnage, be it prot, fury or arms.
Gameplay wise I love healing too much to be able to play warrior as my main anymore; I play a druid. But liking rage as a mechanic, being dual-specced for healing and tanking gets me pretty close to warrior tanking feel but also lets me be able to heal if I want to(and I do quite often).
But druid can never really catch that feeling of "THWANG!" of shield slam, nor the spinning-like-dervish-on-drugs that is female tauren swinging away with a shield and one-hander. Ah dang; can't have everything.
Elijah Nov 30th 2009 5:53PM
You, Mr. Rossi, are my personal Warrior hero. I have 3 warriors, my main, a bank alt that I casually level, and one Horde side. I never get tired of Charging midair into some squishy clothie or leather wearer and see them trying to run away after the initial stun wears off. I thanks Elune (my main is a NE Warrior) for Sweeping Strikes+ Bladestorm, as well as Shockwave and Devastate. I love my warriors and will always play one.
