Zarhym may not care for cranberries, but we do -- and since Pilgrim's Bounty is over and you can't get the ingredients for a good Cranberry Chutney anymore in game, we'll just have to make it at home instead.
Although the word "chutney" sounds like it would be on the slimy and disgusting side for both cooking and eating, it's actually a tasty little condiment. We turned to Wisegeek.com (style points for that reference, please!) for a non-biased description of this dish: "Chutney is similar in consistency to jelly, salsa or relish, and is used as a sweet and sour condiment. Usually made fresh, chutney contains fruit and sugar to give it a sweet taste, and almost all chutney contains vinegar and perhaps onions to give it a corresponding sour flavor. The ingredients are mixed together and then simmered slowly. While chutney is primarily sweet and sour, there can also be many variations of spices, often giving it a hot and spicy flavor."
Sound tempting? We've got a version for cooks and non-cooks alike.
Cranberry Chutney
1 Tangy Wetland Cranberries (Alliance) or Tangy Southfury Cranberries (Horde)
1 Honey
Ingredients are purchased from holiday vendors for Pilgrim's Bounty, so you won't find these in game anymore this year. Try again next season!
Cranberry Chutney may be made beginning at cooking skill 160 (orange difficulty). It goes yellow at 210, greens out at 222 and finally turns grey at 235.
Cranberry Chutney for the Non-Cook (skill level <160)
The mats
1 can whole cranberries
1 can cubed or chopped pineapple
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (check both the baking supplies and snack food areas for pre-chopped nuts)
1/4 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 cup raisins (chopped, if they're on the large side)
<1/8 teaspoon freshly grated ginger (don't be scared by fresh; buy a tiny little chunk) or 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
The strat
No gear or skill checks are required for this one, although having a rogue on hand for Slice and Dice speeds things along. Invite all the ingredients into your raid bowl, but there's no need to zone into the raid instance in order to complete the achievement. Simply chill in Northrend (your refrigerator also works nicely) several hours before serving.
Cranberry Chutney for the Leveling Cook (skill level 160-235)
The mats
1-3/4 pounds tart apples, chopped
2-1/4 pounds fresh or canned cranberries
2 cups honey
1-1/4 cups cider vinegar
1/2 pound raisins
3/4 teaspoon ground cloves
3/4 teaspoon pepper flakes
1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 tablespoon salt
1/8 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
The strat
You can get by with a Basic Campfire for this recipe; it won't be necessary to track down an oven in town. Invite all the ingredients into your raid bowl (a saucepan should be plenty of room) and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes.
Cranberry Chutney for the Chef (skill level 235+)
The mats
1 lb. fresh cranberries
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. honey
1/2 c. golden raisins
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. fresh, grated ginger
1-1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 ground allspice
1 c. water
1 c. chopped tart apple
1 c. minced onion
1/2 c. chopped celery
The strat
Send out raid invites to all except the apples, onion and celery, then summon into a Dutch oven or other heavy cooking pot. Cook over medium heat while doing the Safety Dance (stirring frequently) until the cranberries inevitably get caught in Eruption (they release their juice, about 15 minutes). Port in the apples, onion and celery and distribute among the rest of the groups within the raid (stir in). Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until thickened (about another 15 minutes), stirring occasionally. Port back out to Northrend (chill) before serving.

This was actually a really nice article.

I share one thing with Zarhym, I hate Cranberries. Just seeing them in my bags during the Pilgrim holiday made me a bit nauseous...
Frank Nov 30th 2009 9:40PM
sounds delish. serving suggestions?
Microtonal Nov 30th 2009 9:58PM
I'm not a big fan of cranberries, either, but that last recipe sounds fabulous. I bet if you left out the celery and onions, it'd be a tasty topping for some vanilla ice cream.
Aldarion Dec 1st 2009 2:51AM
Well yeah, leaving the onions out is something I've thinking about as well... But would try it both ways just to see how it tastes...
Also, you can never be sure that it actually won't taste fabulous one way or the other... It's like me first discovering thanks to a friend that fries+ice cream=heaven. First I thought it was bollocks but hey, never say no!
Maybe ice cream has a dimension of taste that only onions can unlock... ;)

I *love* cranberries, and I think I'll try to make these at some point. Thanks for the article!

Just above the line "Cranberry Chutney for the non cook", you miswrote "skill" as "kill". For "orange at cooking skill 160".

Thanks for the catch!

That food looks really good.

A more reasonable chutney...
2 shallots, peeled and minced
1 Tbs olive oil
1 12 oz bag frozen cranberries
2/3 cup raw or turbino sugar, or white sugar
1 Tbs apple cider vinegar ... See More
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp fresh, pickled, or candied ginger, minced
1 Tbs orange juice concentrate, or 2 Tbs orange juice
1/4 cup Sam Adams cherry wheat or cranberry lambic
1/4 cup ginger ale
1/2 tsp Kosher or sea salt
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
First, add oil to saucepan and saute shallots and garlic until soft, about 3 minutes. Stir constantly so garlic doesn't brown.
Pour remaining ingredients in and cook on medium-low heat until you reach desired consistency. Cranberries will pop and sauce will thicken.
Raedonic Dec 1st 2009 3:53AM
But wait, if you cook until desired consistency, and then the cranberries pop and the sauce thickens, wouldn't you want to make the sauce a bit thinner?
Great article though, bookmarked for future awesomeness at dinner

Yum! I shall have to try one of those. I just made a simple sauce this year which turned out fantastically:
Mats:
1 bag of cranberries
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup water
2 pumpkin spice chai teabags
Boil up the last 4 ingredients, then add berries and reduce to a simmer for about 10 minutes. Mmmmm.
Elilara Dec 1st 2009 1:36AM
Wait. I'm wrong on the water amount... though I just followed the instructions on the cranberry bag :D

WTB SageFish Recipe!
johnspoerl Dec 1st 2009 5:40AM
Sagefish? Thats easy.
One cleaned trout, one stick of butter, a few lemons and a hot rock to stick it on.

This makes me really miss the Well Fed Buff column. That was such a neat article. I'd love to see it come back. (Heck, I'd love to compile a recipe book based on WoW foods...)
What ever happened to that article?
lisapoisso Dec 1st 2009 10:02AM
You're reading it! Well Fed Buff has been folded into World of WarCrafts. (You can even spy the well-fed-buff tag down at the bottom, among all the rest.) We intended it to be more regular than it has been, actually -- we've just had so many other fabulous arts and crafts to highlight that it's been a while. You'll see more recipes on a regular basis, never fear!

You know, I really missed the Well Fed Buff column. There was some delicious stuff in there. Glad you guys are finally stepping up and teaching me how to cook again.
