Our languages have to be horribly different from one another for that kind of mistake to be made.

Yeah, a lot can be different. It also doesn't help that a translation site was used to do it, they just put in the words that most commonly come up with that symbol/word.
For instance, in japanese one word can have maybe 20 meanings, and the only difference between each one is a kanji here, or a different kanji there.
Now, I'm no expert on Taiwanese, but I'm sure their language has some words like that, along with a different sentence structure.
