Advanced screenshotting techniques and tips

First and foremost, taking a screenshot is usually bound to your "Print Screen" key -- whenever you're playing the game, just hit that key on your keyboard, and a screenshot (in JPG format -- it used to be saved in TGA, but Blizzard changed that a while ago) will show up in the /Screenshots folder inside the World of Warcraft installation on your hard drive. Of course, on a Mac keyboard, there is no Print Screen button, so I have mine bound to the "Home" button instead -- you can rebind it to whatever you want in the options menu. And that's just the basics -- it gets more complicated from there.
First thing you'll probably want to do is pretty the screenshot up by getting all of those messy UI elements out of the way -- you can do that by pressing Alt-Z before you take the shot. If you want to zoom way back and get a big wide shot, you can either change your camera distance in the UI, or do a little code tweak to make it even wider. You can change your video mode, too, if you want to get the best graphics you can.
And finally, addons can help as well. Multishot will automatically take screenshots for you at opportune moments -- leveling, boss kills, and so on. PhotoOp will do the same thing, and even has a script API that will let you script screenshots whenever you want. Deathsnap will hit the button when you die (in case you want to see what killed you?), and FreezeFrame seems really interesting -- it has all sorts of extra options to add to your images, including putting a stamp at the bottom of which character you're on, and where you were when the shot was taken.
As for making your screenshots look better, you might even want to turn to traditional photo composition tips for that one. But the addons and UI tips above should have you doing as much screenshotting as you want in no time.

Another good tip is turning off name display in the Interface/Names section.

Are there any macros out there that will do this automatically?
Like, by pressing one key have it automatically remove nameplates, alt-z, take the pic, then return name plates to previous setting and alt-z you back to normal screen?
i searched a little but couldn't find any.

Theres an addon i found on curse client called smart screenshot it seems to do what you want:
Allows quick creation of clean screenshots, removing names on players and the whole UI, restoring it quick after. Four ways to use it: 1) bind a key in wow bindings 2) use comandline command "/sss" 3) execute the script "DoSmartScreenshot()" or macro "/run DoSmartScreenshot()" 4) hold shift when doing usual sreenshots (NOTE! this will take some time and will generate 2 screenshots, one with and one without UI)

As an edit to my above comment there is more than one that does it:
Perfect Screenshot
ScreenPlus
Smart Screenshot (in my previous comment)
And a few others that arent as good/useful.

Can anyone tell me what would cause my screenshots to be darker than my actual in game view? I find this across all games I play, the screenshots come out looking like they have less contrast and colour. This has been bugging me for ages, any help would be very welcome please!
perderedeus Dec 7th 2009 9:22AM
James, it may have something to do with your video card forcing certain gamma settings, or even brightness settings on your monitor.

No mention of Sentry Totem? It's like an old school portable camera.
justanothername2 Dec 7th 2009 12:20PM
I forgot all about that totem...

Mind vision also makes from some great screenshots of mobs, especially bosses that would ROFLstomp you if you approached them normally.

I have an addon I think is called AchievementSnap that takes one every time I get an achievement. It's not as useful for the little holidays ones and such, but I have an immediate record of the big ones without thinking about it, and the timing is pretty perfect for all of them.

Thanks Perderedeus for the tip. I am using a ATI 4870x2, I play all games in non window mode and they run at the same resolution as my desktop of 1920x1200. I quickly searched for how to adjust the gamma on my card but didn't find anything. I know in game I can adjust gamma but it looks fine in the game, its only when I screenshot and look at the results in windows explorer it looks poor.
Krugeroff Dec 7th 2009 9:40AM
it may actually be windows and not your screenshots. Try viewing the screenshot in a viewing program like photoshop, painshop pro or picassa (free).
Your desktop settings may actually be darker than your in game settings also.

Another free program that I use is paint.net

The one thing that bothers me about "ALT-Z" is that you used to have to repress that same combination to get yourself out of that mode, but now if you use escape it automatically kicks you out. Now, if you're like me and you forget you're targeting another player so that their nameplate shows up... you want to quickly press escape to cancel who you're targeting... unfortunately that will kick you already out of the "ALT-Z" mode. So you either have to press f1 to retarget yourself, making you brighter than the rest in the picture, or click on another player..hoping they move out of the way (OR kick yourself out and re-do "ALT-Z" again, which is annoying).

escape as in the "escape key"
Muse Dec 7th 2009 9:57AM
On the topic, sorta, how do I make it so my computer doesn't stop to smell the roses when I try taking a screenshot. Stops straight dead for several seconds.
james Dec 7th 2009 10:03AM
Thanks Krugeroff and Expo. I already have irfanview installed. I opened the same screenshot in Irfanview next to the standard windows picture preview. The colour depth in Irfanview is much higher and looks as I expected it to. Of course in the past when my guild has wanted screenshots etc I have been opening them in the windows viewer and editing them to try to fix the darkness without much success. Now I know I don't need to do that! needless to say Irfanview is now my default picture viewer! Thank you peeps, achievments for you all :)

Something else worth mentioning is that there is an option in the keybinds for "Flip (or is it reverse?) Camera, giving you the view of the front of your toon. It's unbound by default, so you'll need to go in and set it.
justanothername2 Dec 7th 2009 12:19PM
Ah ha, that's perfect for me. I didn't even realize there was an option, but I have it bound now. So much quicker and easier.

A good article on the technical aspects of how to take a screenshot, however, I was sad no information on how to actually take a better picture were mentioned, so here's some good info on photography composition. Hope it leads to some wonderful things!
